Before the match, we get a video package running through Morgan and Abyss’ history, they’re a tag team that split up, if you can believe that. To win this match you have to put your opponent directly into thumb tacks. Matt Morgan makes his way out first. There is a bag of thumbtacks on a pole against two of the turnbuckles, and yes Vince Russo worked for the company at the time, why do you ask? Don West says Jim Cornette should have let Sheik Abdul Bashir speak earlier, as the USA was built on the Freedom of speech. Mike Tenay says he had a fair say. Abyss enters holding another bag, and I see some boards with thumbtacks on them at ringside.
MATT MORGAN VS. ABYSS (Match of10,000 Tacks)
TNA Destination X 2009 (Date)
Matt Morgan attacks from behind and works Abyss over in the corner but decides to taunt before sending Abyss into the ropes. Abyss comes back at Morgan with right hands. Morgan cuts him off with a knee to the midsection, and knee strikes in a clinch.
Matt Morgan hits the ropes and runs into a clothesline, but he avoids a running splash. Matt Morgan clotheslines Abyss over the top rope to the floor, Abyss trips Morgan and crotches him on the ring post and he places the boards with thumbtacks near the top of the ramp. This gives Morgan time to recover, Abyss punches Morgan but gets sent into the guardrail before Matt Morgan brings it back in the ring. He tries to pin but Earl Hebner reminds him that it will mean nothing. Matt Morgan sends Abyss into the corner and hits a jumping splash and he slams Abyss. Abyss gets his throat dropped across the top rope as Morgan leaps over him and to the floor. Matt Morgan grabs the bag of thumbtacks from the pole as we get a random pause. Matt Morgan poors the thumbtacks into a pile on the mat and drags Abyss over them, Morgan takes some time to talk as the camera man gets a great close up. I really should give them more credit when I notice it, I give them enough shit. Abyss fights back to his feet with elbows, Morgan connects with headbutts but gets goozled. Abyss walks Morgan over to the pile of tacks but Matt Morgan elbows out of the chokeslam attempt.
Matt Morgan misses a clothesline and gets sent into the corner, Abyss hits a running clothesline and runs his ass into Matt Morgan as he’s slumped against the turnbuckles. Abyss goes for the other bag of thumbtacks, the fans chant that they want tacks, but I’m not sure they know they’re insulting the match by saying they want it to end. Matt Morgan hits the Carbon Blueprint (a running big boot) and brings a chair from ringside. The chair is wedged between the top and middle turnbuckle, Abyss reverses an irish whip, Matt Morgan tries to float-over but Abyss kicks him in the balls before sending Matt Morgan head-first into the chair. Abyss finally has a chance to open his bag of thumbtacks, adding it to the pile that Matt Morgan started. Matt Morgan fights out of the powerbomb and hits the ropes, running into a Blackhole Slam. Abyss opens the bag that he brought with him, and it’s shards of glass! I do remember him doing this for a while. He adds the shards of glass to the thumbtacks and Matt Morgan gets the hell out of the ring. Matt Morgan walks up the ramp, Mike Tenay calls it a cowardly move but Don West hints that Matt Morgan is getting close to the boards of thumbtacks. Abyss catches up with Morgan and connects with right hands.
Abyss goozles Morgan again but gets kicked in the balls, which I guess is a return for earlier. Matt Morgan gets away from the tacks as Abyss falls close to the edge of the ramp. Matt Morgan hits another Carbon Footprint sending Abyss off the ramp into the boards of thumbtacks.
WINNER: MATT MORGAN
In a reverse from Saturday’s trios match, this was a less than average match that was boosted by its finish. It’s worth your time if it peaks your interest, [**] 3.5/10
