RODDY PIPER (C) VS. SCOTT HALL

The nWo Wolfpac music plays as we see Disco Inferno walking out to the ring. They restart it as Scott Hall appears and I’m not mad hearing the music for longer. Roddy Piper enters to bagpipes, he hands the championship to the referee. Scott Hall takes it to check out his reflection and the two men go face to face to begin the match.

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Mike Tenay and Tony Schiavone are on commentary for this match.

RODDY PIPER © VS. SCOTT HALL (WCW United States Championship)

WCW SuperBrawl IX (21st February 1999)

Scott Hall shoves Roddy Piper and gets a slap to the face for it. The bell  rings and Piper throws his kilt over Scott Hall’s face before connecting with right hands.

Scott Hall gets his vision back but he’s being choked with the kilt as the referee does a crossword in the corner or something. Piper takes Hall off his feet and sends Scott Hall’s head into the top turnbuckle. Roddy Piper chokes Hall with the belt from his kilt and hits the ear clap, which hasn’t been used since Bruno Sammartino’s prime. Piper connects with jabs, Hall takes a nap but Piper slaps the back of his head and kicks him in the ribs. They taunt to build their finishers and Piper strikes first with a right hand. Roddy Piper drops Hall with a neckbreaker and covers for 1. Scott Hall sends his shoulder into Piper’s chest and puts him in a top wristlock. Scott Hall uses Piper’s hair to distract him, but Roddy replies in kind. Hall is dropped to the mat and Piper pulls his hair out before knocking Disco Inferno from the apron. Roddy Piper decks Scott Hall and hits an atomic drop. Hall is jabbed in the throat out of the referee’s sight, but he sends Piper into the middle rope. Piper bails to the floor and pokes Disco in the eyes, but Hall attacks Piper from behind and sends him into the ring steps. Piper’s head hits the steps a second time and Scott Hall brings it back to the ring.

Scott Hall knocks Piper against the ropes and connects with right hands. Piper has to use the ropes to stay on his feet but he asks for more. Roddy Piper gets a shot in and the referee backs Hall away. Piper dives at Hall with a low blow, Scott Hall replies in kind and we get a double-down. Scott Hall gets to his feet first and he puts the champion in the tree of woe. Hall stomps at Piper in the corner. Disco Inferno chokes Roddy Piper in he corner as Scott Hall has the referee distracted. Roddy Piper unhooks himself from the ropes and stands up into a right hand. Scott Hall puts Piper in an abdominal stretch, using Disco Inferno for leverage. The referee finally catches Wolfpac cheating and that gives Piper momentum to hip toss out of the hold. Scott Hall rolls out f the way of the elbow drop and lifts Piper on to the top rope. Roddy Piper stuns Scott with right hands and jumps on his back with a Sleeper Hold. Scott Hall starts to fade so Disco Inferno jumps in the ring. Piper knocks him down with right hands. A kick to the ribs keeps Hall on the mat as Disco Inferno gets backed into the corner.

Roddy Piper cuts off Kevin Nash before he can get in the ring but Hall attacks from behind. Scott Hall folds Piper up and puts his feet on the middle rope for the 3 count.

WINNER: SCOTT HALL (NEW WCW United States Champion)

This was a pretty good match, it wasn’t the best match of either guy’s career, or even best in WCW but it was a well worked match with Roddy Piper vs. nWo Wolfpac and everyone else story within the match kept Piper on the back foot. It had  a strange heel vs. heel dynamic though and the finish was out of nowhere. [**] 3.25/10

Roddy Piper grabs the Championship belt after the match, so Scott Hall gets the microphone to ask for it back. Roddy thinks about it before dropping it at Scott Hall’s feet. Roddy Piper ducks a belt shot and kicks Hall out of the ring, grabbing the belt back. Disco Inferno grabs the other end of the belt and gets it back as Kevin Nash gets on the apron. Scott Hall joins him on another side of the ring and they step onto the mat at the same time. Hot Rod tries to exchange rights with both but decides to bail before the numbers game gets too much.
