Before the match CM Punk is asked about his odds tonight. CM Punk says he’s had the odds stacked against him his whole life. Randy Orton shows up and says that CM Punk won’t leave as champion. Punk calls him an injured, former champion and asks if Randy’s 100%. They continue talking until The Legacy attacks CM Punk from behind. Kofi Kingston helps his friend but CM Punk is Punted in the head by Orton.
Maryse makes her way out first, she has been on Smackdown for around 6 months
now. Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler ask if Punk will be able to
defend his World Heavyweight Championship tonight. Michelle McCool makes her
way out as we switch to JR & Tazz.
Jim Ross and Tazz are on commentary for this match, Charles
Robinson is our referee.
MICHELLE McCOOL©
VS. MARYSE
WWE Unforgiven 2008 (7th September 2008)
They lock up to a stalemate to begin, Maryse takes the champion down in a hammerlock, but is on the wrong side of the pin, kicking out at 1.
Maryse gets tripped and has to kick out again, Michelle McCool gets an arm wrench and sends Maryse off the ropes. Maryse blocks the hip toss but not a Russian leg sweep which gets the first WWE Diva’s Champion a nearfall. Michelle McCool grabs the arm again, snapping it over her shoulder in the wristlock but Maryse takes her down by the hair. That’s always going to be effective. Michelle McCool kips up into a top wristlock, a backflip from the middle rope gives her the momentum to send Maryse across the ring. Maryse takes a powder on the floor and cuts off McCool with a kick to the knee. Maryse fails to send the champion into the crowd, so gives her an extra shove of encouragement. Michelle McCool connects with a big boot over the security wall, they never talk about Undertaker’s flexibility when he hits that. Anyway, a clothesline from the security wall brings us back to the ring at 6. Michelle McCool connects with European uppercuts as we see the replay of the big boot. Maryse is sent off the ropes and she ducks a clothesline, chopping McCool down at the knee.
Maryse starts to focus on the left knee with boots and slamming it into the mat, using it to control McCool on the mat. Maryse bends McCool’s leg back around her knee and wrenches the pressure before trapping both lower legs and stretching McCool’s knee out. Maryse wraps McCool’s left knee around the bottom rope and she gets kicked in the face for her efforts. I think that was a reasonable reaction, but Maryse is back on her with mounted punches before dragging the champion back to the middle of the ring. Michelle McCool is put in a standing toehold, but she reverses the pressure and gets an opening to return some of the leg work, hitting Maryse’s knee with kicks and an elbow drop. Michelle McCool rolls Maryse into a heel hook but Maryse uses the bottom rope to break the hold. Maryse sends McCool into the middle rope and chokes her with the knee across McCool’s back. Tazz explains how tight the ropes are, more so as you’re pressed against them. Maryse walks into another kick to the face, which is enough for a nearfall. They exchange strikes, getting to their feet as McCool connects with forearms and kicks Maryse back into the ropes. An irish whip sends Maryse across the ring, McCool ducks early but rolls through the sunset flip and hits a dropkick. Michelle McCool covers but it’s only enough for a 1-count as the fans start to turn on the match.
Michelle McCool’s knee gives out
on a suplex attempt, Maryse kicks the hamstring but the irish whip is reversed
and Michelle McCool gets her boot up. She hits a standing Falcon Arrow and
covers for the win.
WINNER: MICHELLE McCOOL (STILL WWE Diva’s Champion
This was as decent of a female wrestling match as we could get in WWE at the time. The fans chanting TNA just as they went home should have spoken, but it was a faint chant. They worked well with some stand-out moments in the 5-minute match, but it’s what I’ve come to expect from this era. [*¾] 4/10
