KANE VS. SHANE McMAHON

In the build up to this match, Shane McMahon kicked Kane into a dumpster that was set on fire, Kane electrocuted Shane O’Mac’s balls. Yeah, it’s pretty heavy pretty quick. And to think, it all started with Linda taking a Tombstone Piledriver on the ramp.

Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. Lillian Garcia is our ring announcer and she goes through the basic rules of the match.

KANE VS. SHANE McMAHON (Last Man Standing)

Unforgiven 2003 (21st September 2003)

Kane makes his way out first, Shane McMahon attacks him from behind with a steel chair, which starts the match.

Kane shoves Shane away and gives chase into the ring, Shane ducks and hits him with another chair shot from ringside. Shane knocks Kane down with a jumping chair shot and Charles Robinson starts to count. Kane sits up at 4 and Shane McMahon interrupts the count with another chair shot so we start again. Kane is back to his feet at 6, he blocks a chair shot that never comes as Shane hits him in the leg/balls with the chair then targets the left knee. Shane is showing his versatility by using the top of the chair for this part. Kane’s leg is wrapped around the ring post but he kicks Shane into the security wall with his good leg. JR starts going off on Eric Bischoff for making this match, calling him a “seedy no-good bastard” and it’s an opinion that a few in the wrestling business would agree to, from what I’ve heard. Anyway, Shane is back on top with a chop block, and another. Kane is sent into the ring steps a few times and the referee starts counting him down. Kane’s grunting to sell here is quite funny.

Shane McMahon connects with jabs but is sent into the crowd. Shane sends Kane’s face into the security wall but the crossbody attempt is caught momentarily by Kane. Shane lands on the floor and is down for 5, Kane connects with an uppercut as Shane gets to his feet and a right hand and boot to the ribs keeps him down. Kane doesn’t initiate the count so he can keep punishing Shane. Kane sends Shane into the ring steps then sends the top half of the ring steps into Shane McMahon and the referee starts to count. Shane is either back on his feet at 8, or Kane interrupts it, it could be either. Shane is sent into the ring for a few kicks. Shane McMahon takes a Chokeslam and that should be it, but he’s up at 7, using the referee for assistance. Kane goes to Big Boot Shane, but hits Charles Robinson instead. I was just thinking we needed a ref bump… Kane brings the bottom half of the ring steps into the ring as Shane struggles to his feet using the ring ropes.

That effort is a waste as Kane knocks him down with a right hand to set up the Tombstone, Shane wriggles free and hits a bulldog on the ring steps. Shane kicks the steps into Kane, then targets the legs. Slamming a heavy object into my legs would definitely stop me standing for a while. Kane is trapped in the corner with the ring steps over his legs as Shane climbs to the top turnbuckle across the ring. Coast to Coast into the steel steps! The fans give that a “Holy Shit” chant as Shane gets a phantom win. Charles Robinson is crawling back to the ring after his nap and begins the count, both guys are up at 9 and Shane is thrown over the top to the floor. Kane beats Shane halfway up the entranceway but Shane O’Mac avoids a charge, sending Kane into the barricade. Shane connects with shots to the midsection and trips over himself knocking Kane down. Kane takes advantage, kicking Shane in the midsection and sending him into the Unforgiven set.

The referee starts to count as Kane catches his breath, he picks Shane up and sends him into the set a few more times. Shane is down for 6 before Kane attacks again with a right hand and a boot. Shane is sent into a lighting truss, Kane lifts him onto a shoulder and lawn-darts him into the Spanish Announce Table. Kane walks up to the raised platform and clears the announce table before tipping it over to the floor. Kane laughs at his work, but as he goes to look for the remains of Shane McMahon he gets blindsided. Shane hits him with some kind of sign and swings the arm of a boom camera into Kane’s head knocking him down for 9. Shane starts choking Kane with about 10 feet more of electrical cord than he needs, dragging Kane up to the raised platform. Shane connects with a combination of punches but dances into a goozle, Low blow into a DDT from Shane to counter, we get a replay of the boom camera shot from the perspective of the boom camera as Shane uses the monitor as a weapon. He looks up high and climbs the side of the Unforgiven set but eats shit on the big spot as Kane moves out of the way!

The referee begins the count, Kane gets to his feet at 7 as Shane is still inside the crater he created on the Spanish announce platform.

WINNER: KANE

That was a hell of a finish. There were moments that I was starting to think it was getting ridiculous and the runtime of the match didn’t seem feasible at first glance (closing in on 20 minutes). However, they were able to pace it and bring the match to a crescendo to keep my attention. Shane took all of the openings that Kane gave him but Kane was able to shake everything off until the end. The boom camera was a cool shot and Shane got his big fall, which justified the rematch later in the year. [**¾] 5/10
