LUTHER REIGNS VS. EDDIE GUERRERO

WWE No Mercy 2004 (3rd October 2004)

The fans chant for Eddie as they lock up. Luther Reigns backs Eddie into the corner and shoves him at the break. Eddie Guerrero charges, Reigns is back in control and he knocks Guerrero down with a short-arm clothesline.

Eddie Guerrero gets to his feet and pokes Reigns in the eye, setting up a series of strikes. Reigns is sent off the ropes into a back elbow, then into the top turnbuckle. Eddie takes him down with a drop toehold, before putting Luther in a chinlock. Luther Reigns works to his feet. He can’t break the hold with forearms so Eddie is sent off the ropes into a shoulder tackle. Reigns connects with a right hand and a kick, but Eddie catches another kick and sweeps Reigns’ leg. Eddie Guerrero returns to the headlock, Reigns sends him across the ring. Eddie runs back with a dropkick to the midsection and snapmares Reigns over for 2. Eddie tries to work the arm but is sent into the turnbuckles. Eddie staggers out into a military press and is slammed to the mat for 2. Luther Reigns kicks Eddie’s midsection before sending him across the ring and catching Eddie in a bear hug. Eddie Guerrero targets Reigns’ eyes out of the referee’s vision to break the bearhug and headbutts Reigns.

Eddie Guerrero runs into a big boot, Reigns covers but Eddie kicks out at 2. Luther Reigns connects with jabs and a backhand, covering for 2. He goes to the chinlock, placing his knee in Guerrero’s back. Eddie fights out, so it is transitioned into a surfboard, with Eddie’s arms pulled back. Eddie Guerrero is able to fight to his feet, then drops and kicks Reigns under the chin to break the hold. Eddie walks into a back elbow but puts Reigns in a headlock momentarily before it’s broken with a back suplex. Luther Reigns covers at Jindrak’s suggestion, but Eddie kicks out at 2. Luther Reigns hits a backbreaker and stretches Eddie’s back across his knee. Eddie Guerrero is able to fight out with knees but he gets dumped to the floor. Mark Jindrak takes cheap shots on the floor while the referee is distracted. Eddie Gerrero uses the count before getting in the ring, he avoids a kick and grabs a waistlock, but Luther Reigns powers out of it, knee to the midsection from Reigns, he sends Eddie off the ropes into a back elbow, covering for 2.

Luther Reigns hits another backbreaker, stretching Eddie across his knee until Eddie fights out. Reigns strikes first with a kick to the midsection, then hits a standing powerslam but only gets 2½. Eddie Guerrero climbs the ropes and takes Reigns down to the mat to counter the Swinging Neckbreaker and the referee counts both men down. They both beat the count, Eddie connects with shots to the midsection, Luther Reigns walks into a dropkick and gets knocked down with clotheslines, Eddie runs through Reigns and hits two vertical suplexes, Luther Reigns blocks the third and drops Eddie Guerrero face-first. Eddie leaves the ring, he knocks into a security guard and acquires a small baton then slides it in his boot. Eddie brings a chair into the ring, Luther Reigns grabs the other end and the tug of war sends Reigns back, Jindrak is on the apron but avoids getting hit. Eddie Guerrero dropkicks the chair back into Reigns and knocks Jindrak to the floor.

Luther Reigns rolls out of the way of the Frog Splash, the referee clears the chair from the ring as Eddie brings out the baton and hits Reigns with it. The referee counts them both down, but Eddie is on his feet at 4. He climbs to the top rope and hits a Frog Splash for the win.

WINNER: EDDIE GUERRERO

This match wouldn’t have lost anything by having a coiple of minutes shaved from it, but Luther Reigns got to look dominant and got some ring time with a great veteran in Eddie, who did his part fighting from underneath. [**] 3.5/10
