LUNA VACHON VS. MADUSA

The WCW Women’s Championship was in limbo as Sonny Onoo didn’t recognise Madusa beating Akira Hokuto in Japan for reasons. The whole title history is convoluted because the company didn’t care about the division, they just wanted to keep names from WWF.

Luna Vachon makes her way out first and Lee Marshall puts over her family ties and her mean streak. Madusa makes her way out and gets a decent pop considering the effort the company put into the division.

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Tony Schiavone, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes and Lee Marshall are crowding the announce booth for this match.

LUNA VACHON VS. MADUSA

WCW Slamboree 1997 (18th May 1997)

Luna Vachon scores first blood, knocking Madusa down and connecting with ax handles. Luna boots Madusa and snapmares her over by the hair, a slam into the mat using the hair follows and Luna screeches to get closer to storing a finisher.

Madusa fights back from her knees with forearm strikes, but Luna knocks her down and a clubbing blow takes her down for the second time. Madusa gets a second wind fighting back with slaps but a rake to the eyes stops that quickly. Luna chokes Madusa across the middle rope and struts for a while. Luna Vachon chokes Madusa using her boot and she must have been studying The Prisoner before this match. A catapult sends Madusa into the bottom rope, which she didn’t learn from The Prisoner, but it’s enough to wake Madusa up. She fires back with forearms and sends Luna off the ropes into a spinning kick. Luna trips Madusa and chokes her, then moves to an abdominal claw. Luna breaks the claw for another choke and breaks it before she gets disqualified.

Luna Vachon hits a suplex and covers, but Madusa bridges out of it. Madusa reverses an irish whip and clotheslines Luna in the corner then fires off some chops. Luna is sent across the ring for another clothesline and some kicks from Madusa. Madusa sends Luna off the ropes for a running clothesline which sends Luna onto the back of her neck. Madusa takes some time before the cover and Luna kicks out. She crawls to the ropes but Madusa has her ankles, Luna climbs the ropes with her hands but is dropped face first to the mat. Madusa kicks at Luna’s hamstring until Luna pokes her in the eye. Luna sends Madusa off the ropes and ducks, Madusa goes over for the sunset flip but Madusa sits down on the cover. She starts slamming Madusa’s head into the mat instead of getting the pin and Schiavone thinks it was a mistake. Madusa rolls through for a nearfall. Luna Vachon reverses an irish whip, bringing Madusa down by the hair.

Luna Vachon hits a swinging neckbreaker and climbs to the top rope as Tony Schiavone plugs the website. Madusa avoids the diving attack and hits the Bridging German Suplex for the win.

WINNER: MADUSA

This match was billed as a “grudge match” but it ended just as it really got going. Both of these women can work well, but they were getting to a really decent match and then the sudden finish deflated me slightly. [* ½] 2.75/10
