Before the match, Gordon Solie is in the ring to induct 4 wrestlers into the WCW Hall of Fame. Before that he rolls off names of wrestlers that have recently passed on, and we take a moment of silence. Lou Thesz is the first man to be inducted, Verne Gagne is next with homage paid to his AWA and amateur careers. Mr. Wrestling II is the third man and he declined a Presidential invitation from Jimmy Carter because he couldn’t wear his mask for security reasons. The final induction is unfortunately a posthumous one for Eddie Graham, who is represented by his son, Mike.
Solie throws to Missy Hyatt, who is with 2 guys in suits. One
gives the most generic answers he can to sound mildly interested and due to
that I can’t be bothered to look these guys up. The second guy (not John, to
those that care) is even worse, basically saying “yeah, what he said.”
Sting makes his way
out to bring us back to the show. This is a “special bounty match” according to
our ring announcer. The Prisoner makes his way out and for the 3 of you who may
not know it’s Nailz. Same attire, same gimmick, just a shittier name.
The referee takes some time getting The Prisoner to drop his (presumably
stolen) police baton.
Larry Zbyzsko and Tony Schiavone are on commentary for
this match.
THE PRISONER VS.
STING
WCW Slamboree 1993 (23rd May 1993)
They lock up, The Prisoner backs Sting into the ropes, choking him as they move around the ring. The referee breaks the hold so The Prisoner begins another choke, forcing Sting down into the corner. The Prisoner continues the choke with his boot before going back to the classic hand around the throat, breaking just before he’s disqualified.
Sting is sent off the ropes into a back elbow so he can get a momentary break from the choking. Sting’s head hits the top turnbuckle before The Prisoner sends him across the ring. The Prisoner connects with forearms in the corner and sends Sting back the other way. Sting staggers into The Prisoner’s arms and gets dropped in a backbreaker for 2. The Prisoner sends Sting into the corner, but Sting moves out of the way of the charge before peppering The Prisoner with strikes. The Prisoner eats them all and cuts off Sting’s momentum with a rake to the eyesbefore sending Sting out to the floor. The Prisoner chokes Sting with a camera cable, taking advantage of the referee having to follow 2 counts. The Prisoner takes a short breather before hanging Sting over the top rope and utilising the 5-count. The Prisoner sends Sting’s face into the apron before letting him back in the ring. Sting is sent into the corner and The Prisoner runs at him with a knee to the midsection. Sting is sent off the ropes but he ducks a clothesline and hits one of his own! Sting covers but The Prisoner kicks out at 1. Sting sends The Prisoner off the ropes into a back drop. The Prisoner is sent into the corner for a Stinger Splash, Sting trips The Prisoner and covers, but The Prisoner kicks out at 2. Sting slams The Prisoner but eats shit on the jumping elbow drop.
The Prisoner knocks Sting back into the corner
and unloads more forearms but gets distracted by the referee. Sting climbs to
the top rope and hits a crossbody for the win.
WINNER: STING
Well, this match happened. To call The Prisoner’s moveset limited would be a compliment. Sting bumped around well and did his best, but I want a piece of the bounty for sitting through this chokefest. [*] 1.5/10
