Jim Ross and Bob Caudle are on commentary for this match
Terry Gordy makes his way out first, the ring announcer tells us this match is billed as “battle of the bulls” as Steve Williams rushes to the ring.
STEVE WILLIAMS VS.
TERRY GORDY
Jim Crockett Promotions Clash of the Champions VII (June 1989)
They start by exchanging right hands, Terry Gordy backs Williams into the corner, but Dr. Death fights out and sends Gordy into the ropes. Steve Williams takes him down with an American football tackle to the knee as JR goes nuts, along with the crowd. He knocks Gordy down with a running shoulder tackle and sends him into the corner. Terry Gordy runs out of the corner with a clothesline, Dr. Death’s head hits the turnbuckle and Ross tells us Gordy hits a clothesline but my WWE Network buffers through it. Gordy hits Williams with a knee and they exchange right hands in the corner as commentary talk about Williams wearing a different colour gear, Tony mentions he usually has the Oklahoma red and talks about Williams being a great patriot and literally everything about this 15 seconds is backwards. They’re really pushing the Patriotism tonight (you’ll see the worst of it next week) because they’re in the army base on the Anniversary of the Army’s Formation, Flag Day. They also got to paper tickets for the event with military veterans.
Anyway, back to this match. Jim Ross goes over their history feuding, they also mentioned Kevin Sullivan paying Gordy to turn on Williams over in Japan earlier, They move across the ring and Steve Williams connects with more right hands, Gordy is knocked with more as he gets out of the corner and Williams drops him, popping the crowd. Steve Williams knocks Gordy down to one knee with right hands and knocks him down with an uppercut. Williams headbutts Gordy, Terry Gordy puts a bearhug on Williams after taking the heat and suplexes Williams over. Gordy hits Williams with a right hand and snapmares him down as we go to commercial. He hits Williams with a crossface strike and puts on a chinlock. They trade scoop slams, Williams gets another slam and Gordy rolls out to the floor, Williams follows him around ringside and there’s more right hands so Gordy rolls back in. Terry Gordy sends Williams off the ropes but Willams ducks clothesline attempts and hits a running crossbody for 2. Steve Williams connects with jabs and sends Gordy off the ropes, he knocks the Freebird to the floor for another walk. Terry Gordy is met with knee strikes as he gets back in the ring but he rakes at Williams’ eyes. Gordy’s irish whip attempt is reversed and he’s knocked outside for the third time with a jumping forearm. Terry Gordy tries to walk out of the match, Williams follows him up the entranceway, he tries to beat the count but he was too far away. The fans chant “bullshit” to end the match as Williams uses it as support.
WINNER: DOUBLE COUNT OUT
They didn’t do much in this match, as you can probably
tell by now, but they didn’t have to. Their best work was in Japan and I really
need to start getting some more of that into my reviews. As for this match it
was a good match to get to know how both of these guys work, but the non-finish
sours it for me reviewing although the crowd didn’t care. They got a big guy
brawl, which is what it was supposed to be, I just wish there wasn’t as much
stalling. [**]3.75 /10
