Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan are on commentary for this match.
During Randy Savage’s wedding to Miss Elizabeth, Jake Roberts
sent them a snake as a wedding gift (at least it’s original, better than
getting 5 gravy boats that you’ll barely use) Jake Roberts cut promos on Savage
for the next few months, taking advantage of the forced retirement situation,
as Jack Tunney wouldn’t allow Savage to compete. Randy Savage attacked Jake
Roberts on an episode of Superstars, which lead to the famous moment where
Savage is tied in the ropes and a snake bites his arm.
Jake Roberts is backstage with Sean Mooney, who reminds Jake
that he can’t bring his snake to ringside for this match. Jake cuts an amazing
promo, saying he saw the look in Savage and Elizabeth's eyes when Savage got
bitten and it pleased him. He then blames Tunney for his actions before we go
to Savage and “Mean” Gene Okerlund in another part of the arena. Savage says we
can’t trust Jake because he tells us not to, or can we? He says that Jake
thinks he sees fear in Elizabeth’s eyes. He says he and Jake shouldn’t trust
each other, but Jake should trust that Savage will drop the elbow on Jake. Jake
Roberts’ music hits and Savage starts making his way towards the ring from Mean
Gene.
JAKE ROBERTS VS.
RANDY SAVAGE
WWF This Tuesday in Texas (3rd December 1991)
Randy Savage jumps Jake on the outside. They get into the ring and Savage kicks at Jake, right hands and a choke in the corner before Savage grinds Jake’s forehead across the top rope. Jake Roberts is sent across the ring into the turnbuckles and stumbles into a back elbow, Savage goes straight to the top rope and hits the ax handle. Jake Roberts tries to walk out of the match but Savage brings him back into the ring. Jake Roberts cuts Savage off with a shot to the midsection and sends him through the ropes to the floor. Jake Roberts stops Savage from getting back in the ring and sends him into the ring post. Savage is able to get his arm up, but it’s the arm that the snake attacked, still bandaged up. Roberts wraps Savage’s arm around the ring post and it’s Savage’s turn to try and make some distance. Randy Savage is back in the ring, he fights to his feet with right hands but is cut off instantly. Jake Roberts hits the inverted atomic drop and he starts working the arm on the mat. He rips at the bandage and drops his knee onto Savage’s elbow. Savage gets to his feet, but Jake sends his head into the top turnbuckle. Savage escapes a hammerlock with a back elbow but he can’t capitalize. Jake Roberts sends Savage off the ropes, Savage kicks Jake but is clubbed across the back before he can get anything going. Randy Savage ducks the short-arm clothesline and knocks Roberts back into the corner with a running elbow. They fight over an irish whip and Jake ends up hitting the corner as Savage switches directions, Jake Roberts gets the boot up and the second short-arm clothesline connects. Jake Roberts calls for the DDT but is rammed into the corner. Randy Savage hits the diving elbow drop as Roberts falls in position and covers for the win.
WINNER: RANDY SAVAGE
This was an OK match, Savage started hot and then Roberts was in control for most of it, Savage had to use Jake’s mistakes to get any respite from the beating. It wasn’t great, but this was more about the story. [**] 4.25/10
After the match Randy Savage grabs a chair from ringside,
someone stops him from using it so he takes the ring bell instead. The referee
takes that from Savage too and Jake Roberts is able to hit the DDT on Randy
Savage. He crawls over to the corner and takes a rest before climbing to his
feet and planting Randy Savage with another DDT and finally being kicked out of
the ring by the referee. Jake Roberts turns around as he gets to the entranceway
and grabs something from under the ring, it’s the bag containing the cobra! Miss Elizabeth runs down to the ring and she tries to put herself between Savage and
Jake, telling Jake to leave him alone. Jake Roberts hits another DDT on Savage
and he unties the bag, he puts the glove on and makes Miss Elizabeth beg for
Savage to be left alone. Jake Roberts strikes Elizabeth! Jack Tunney comes down
to the ring (finally) and escorts Jake Roberts to the back. “Mean” Gene
Okerlund is backstage and he needs a word with Jake, he asks what the hell
happened and Jake mocks Liz for begging for Savage’s life, and says hitting a DDT
on Savage was good, but not as good as striking Elizabeth. He wants to see
Elizabeth and touch her again.
