CRUSH VS. RANDY SAVAGE

Vince McMahon, Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. The Fink is our ring announcer, who tells us that falls count anywhere in the building for this special attraction match. Randy Savage makes his way out first for what would be his final Pay Per View match in WWF. Crush walks out with Mr. Fuji, this isn’t a Falls Count Anywhere match as we know it, after the pinfall the guy who’s pinned has 60 seconds to get back in the ring and continue the match, but as Brian Zane from Wrestling With Wregret on YouTube pointed out, what if you pin them in the ring?

CRUSH VS. RANDY SAVAGE (Falls Count Anywhere)

WWF Wrestlemania X (20th March 2004)

Randy Savage meets Crush on the entranceway with right hands, Crush is sent into the railing but fights back with an ugly inverted atomic drop. He hits Savage with a kidney shot and a backbreaker. Crush lifts Savage overhead and drops him over the guard rail, still at the entranceway and pins him. Randy Savage gets to ringside at 30 seconds, Mr. Fuji hits him with the flag, knocking Savage down, Savage crawls back up to the apron and makes it back to the ring with 2 seconds to spare. Crush is straight on the attack, dropping from the apron to the floor and chopping Savage’s throat. Randy Savage is knocked down with a  headbutt before he’s hung in the tree of woe in the corner. Crush takes some free shots at Savage’s midsection before the referee tries to free Savage. Mr. Fuji hands Crush some salt but it’s thrown back in his face!

Randy Savage connects with jabs and a running elbow. He hits Crush with an ax handle from the top rope, Crush is slammed in the middle of the ring and Randy Savage hits the elbow drop, but he doesn’t cover, he shoves Crush out to the floor and covers, giving Crush 60 seconds to get back to the ring. Mr Fuji tries to revive Crush as we hear the 30 seconds mark, pouring water over Crush at we hit 15 seconds. Mr. Fuji shoves Crush back in the ring just before the time expires but Savage is there to jump him. Savage chokes Crush over the top rope, and the referee gets in his face for reasons, so Savage reminds him of the rules. Savage runs into a backdrop over the top rope. Crush follows to the floor and starts attacking Savage’s back. Randy Savage stops himself from hitting the ring post, sending Crush into it instead, then runs him into the ring steps on the other side of the ring. Crush is clotheslined into the crowd but he knocks Savage down with a superkick. Lawler tells Crush to pin but he sets up for a piledriver instead, Randy Savage counters into a backdrop as they brawl backstage. Crush is sent into a door, opening the path and they come to some scaffolding. Crush is sent into the scaffold, he covers Crush and tries to tie Crush’s ankles and hang him upside down, but the knot slips straight away. It had the desired effect on the crowd. Randy Savage makes it back to the ring and beats down Mr . Fuji as we see Crush stirring backstage. The time expires and Savage wins the match.

WINNER: RANDY SAVAGE

That was something, I’m glad the 60-second rule didn’t stick as a part of the match. It made it seem contrived, and it seemed more like falls must be out of the ring, not counting anywhere. It was certainly tame by the standards that would be set a few years later but it was more of a fight than a match, which was the point. Fuck the pins all going to 3 though, that made no sense. [**] 3.75/10
