For those who don’t know, Loch Ness is the British wrestling legend Giant Haystacks. I’m not exaggerating to say my great grandmother used to watch him wrestle on television. Making it 2 people I’m introducing to the reviews this weekend. He faces The Giant, who would wrestle as The Big Show in WWE for the majority of his career.
Earlier in the night “Mean”
Gene Okerlund gets an interview with The Giant and Jimmy Hart. Hart says no one
humiliates him and gets away with it. Gene tells us the winner tonight gets a WCW
Championship match tomorrow night on Nitro against Ric Flair. The Giant says he will smoke Loch Ness like bacon on the griddle, and tomorrow night he’ll beat what
remains of Ric Flair after the Doomsday Cage match for the title. Gene throws
it back to commentary, calling Heenan a weasel, Heenan fires back with “baldy”
and they talk up the big man match later on and the next match, Robert Parker
taking on Madusa.
Back to Gene as he plugs the WCW Hotline. I’m disappointed to
hear that Loch Ness isn’t Scottish as he’s pissed off at Jimmy Hart for taking
him out of the Doomsday Cage. My Network starts buffering again so I skip to Lex Luger’s interview. Jimmy Hart hands Luger a jacket because it’s the last time
they’ll see each other. He wishes Sting luck in his Chicago Street
Fight in a confusing promo.
Loch Ness makes his
way to the ring first for the Giant vs Giant match. Tony Schiovane, Dusty Rhodes and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan are on commentary for this match. Jimmy
Hart walks out with The Giant, giving him a last-minute pep talk.
THE GIANT VS.
LOCH NESS
#1 Contender WCW
Championship
WCW UnCensored 1996 (24th March 1996)
There’s a staredown in the center of the ring, just to remind you at the last second this is A BIG MOTHERFUCKER MATCH! The Giant knees Loch Ness in the midsection and chops him in the corner as if he’s Kenta Kobashi, The Giant chokes Loch Ness with his boot but is gets his eyes raked. Loch Ness connects with headbutts and clubbing blows. The Giant’s head is sent into the top turnbuckle, but he elbows Loch Ness in the midsection and returns the favour. The Giant kicks Loch Ness in the corner but misses the Stinger Splash, tumbling over the top rope to the floor. The Giant struggles back into the ring, Loch Ness knocks him down and hits a jumping elbow drop. Loch Ness goes for another but The Giant rolls out of the way and gets to his feet. The Giant runs into Loch Ness but it barely knocks him back, but a boot to the jaw knocks him down. The Giant hits a leg drop as Rhodes puts over The Giant’s agility, and he covers for the win.
WINNER: THE GIANT
It was short, which is the best that can be said about
this match. It was two big guys colliding until one couldn’t get up again.
Besides the leg drop, The Giant stuck to 1970’s Big Man wrestling, which was
more of a spectacle back then. In the 90’s everyone had their giants on
television each week.[DUD] 1/10
