Lita announced Trish Stratus' retirement announcement in the heel move of the century, leaving Trish to simply confirm it. This also pissed off Trish's onscreen boyfriend Carlito who failed at defending her honor, they lost a mixed tag team match to Edge and Lita on Raw.
There's a video package and a graphic for this match, showing it really must be important. The video package highlight's Trish's career then moves on to Carlito asking Trish about the retirement, Lita Edge went to WWE.com about it. Trish challenged Lita to this match due to their intense rivalry over the years. They've had 12 matches in the series since 10th July 2000 on Raw with Lita winning 7-5. If Trish wins this match she beats her own record, becoming the first 7-time Women's champion. Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross are on commentary for this match.
LITA © VS TRISH STRATUS (WWE Women's Championship)
WWE Unforgiven (17th September 2006)
A “Thankyou Trish” chant starts before they lock up, Trish breaks clean off the ropes but Lita shoves and slaps Trish before sending her into the corner. Trish Stratus hits a clothesline out of the corner for an early nearfall. She hits a handstand headscissors, sending Lita out of the ring. Trish hits a Lou Thesz press from the apron, JR says she calls it “Air Canada” but I've never seen it referenced as such. Lita turns things around on the outside, sending Trish's head into the ring steps, Trish regains her composure and sends Lita over with a handstand hurricanrana before bringing it back into the ring. Lita grabs the bottom rope forcing Trish to back off. Lita finds an opening, sending Trish's face into the mat and choking her on the middle rope, then drops a knee onto Trish's kidneys (or “the back of Trish's head” as JR called) then snapmares her over into a chinlock.
The fans keep rallying behind Trish and she gets to her feet. She fights out of the chinlock but is brought down to the mat by her hair. Trish's head is sent into the turnbuckle and Lita kicks her in the ribs, but Trish takes advantage f the referee backing Lita away, sending her into the corner. Trish kicks at Lita's midsection and chokes her with the boot, which the fans love because she's a face and comes from the same city. Trish chops at Lita, I got flashbacks to Wrestlemania 22 when she licked her hands.... Trish hit a stinger splash but ran into a back elbow the second time. Lita sits on the top rope but Trish is there with another handstand move. Lita counters pulling Trish up to her level and they have a slugfest sat on the corner. That's unique. It's also dangerous as shit, proven as they both tumble to the floor. Lita is up by 4, I'm not even sure I'd be up by 4pm the next afternoon. She climbs to the top again, but is cut off by a right hand. Trish climbs the other side and gets the better of the right hand flurry, knocking Lita to the apron,
Lita pulls Trish Stratus from the top rope into the ring and climbs to the top rope, but Trish rolls out of the way of the moonsault. Trish quickly covers for a nearfall. We're getting to the “replay for every 3rd move” portion now, as Trish is sent over the top rope to the floor on a Stratusfaction attempt, a kid at ringside offers his version of help by telling Trish audibly that she's “so hot” before Lita brings it back into the ring. For some reason that made me laugh. Lita gets a nearfall and hits some ground and pound. The referee backs her off and she kicks Trish in the face. Lita hits a snap suplex for a nearfall and carries on working Trish's midsection with a kick to the ribs and rope-assisted knee drops to the kidneys. Lita pie-faces Trish (no, not that) until Trish mounts a comeback with forearms. Lita hits a side Russian legsweep and carries on with punches to Trish. That reminded me that I used to think Trish's forearms were just terrible punches. Lita gets a nearfall and goes back to a chinlock.
Trish Stratus fights out with elbows and a forearm, She drops Lita with a neckbreaker but it's a double-down. They exchange right hands as they get back to their feet, Trish gets the best of it and sends Lita into the corner but runs into a back elbow. The handstand headscissors works out of the corner and Trish hits the Chick Kick! She almost tripped on Lita's arm but recovered nicely. She covers Lita, 1, 2, 2.999! Lita kicks out again and I bit on that one. Lita rakes Trish's eyes as they get back to their feet, DDT is countered into a Stratusfaction attempt, Trish instead into a sunset flip but Lita sits down. The referee refuses to count since Lita's holding the ropes so Trish brings her over, but breaks the pin at 2 to put Lita in the sharpshooter! The crowd explodes as Trish locks it in and even more so when Lita taps out.
WINNER: TRISH STRATUS (NEW WWE Women's Champion)
This was a solid match, Lita and Trish are talents that you can expect a quality match from in the Women's division at this time and the location and atmosphere added to their intensity in the ring. From the fall from the top rope to the floor they seemed to kick the match into another gear. Trish's sharpshooter didn't look great to me, but she was more vertical to move Lita from the ropes. Lita tapped in Trish's retirement match so she can leave the company as a record-breaking 7-time WWE Women's champ. – As a match it's *** stars, but personally I'd rate it 5/10
After the match Trish Stratus celebrates in the ring with her new championship. The next night she would vacate the belt, leading to a tournament to crown a new champion 25th September episode of Raw leading into Cyber Sunday.
Next week, I'm looking at Lita's retirement match from Survivor Series that same year.
