Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. It was the match made because Stone Cold famously took his ball and went home, not wanting to face Lesnar in what he considered a money match on Raw. I would agree with him, he faced Ric Flair the previous week, but with all due respect to him. 2002 Ric Flair was not a high point.
On to the match, Bubba Ray Dudley enters first. He was split from D-Von in the 2002 draft and decided to team with Spike on Raw, but is in singles action tonight. His opponent enters followed by manager Paul Heyman and JR mentions that Brock Lesnar is this month's WWE Magazine cover star.
BROCK LESNAR VS. BUBBA RAY DUDLEY
WWE Raw (10th June 2002)
The bell rings as Brock attacks Bubba Ray with a clubbing blow. Brock follows with shoulder tackles and a choke in the corner. Bubba Ray Dudley is sent across the ring and falls face-first, dreaming of Smackdown as Lesnar chokes him against the middle rope. Bubba Ray swings the momentum, sending Brock into the corner and squashing him with an avalanche. Bubba Ray Dudley hits a swinging neckbreaker and tells himself to “get the tables” as JR points out it will get him disqualified. Paul Heyman tries to attack Bubba from behind, but it's no sold. Bubba Ray turns around and Heyman audibly says “oh shit” before scrambling over the announce table. Brock Lesnar makes it to ringside but is cut off by a back elbow and his head is sent into the announce table. Brock Lesnar reverses an irish whip, pulling Dudley back into a belly to belly suplex on the floor. Brock brings it back into the ring and kicks at Bubba Ray Dudley as we see a replay of the suplex. Bubba is sent into the corner chest first and Lesnar locks in a bearhug. Bubba Ray Dudley elbows his way free and Brock sets up another belly to belly, Bubba escapes with a headbutt and ducks a clothesline. Brock Lesnar goes back to the bearhug, lifting and suplexing Bubba over.
Bubba Ray makes his way to his feet with his former boss trash talking at volume from ringside, Brock Lesnar hits another overhead belly to belly suplex for a nearfall. Lesnar immediately covers again for another nearfall. Brock Lesnar sends Bubba across the ring but misses the running shoulder block and hits the post. Bubba Ray hits a german suplex and they're both down until 5. Bubba backs Brock against the ropes with jabs and there's a miscommunication as Brock reverses an irish whip but ducks early, Bubba kicks him and ducks a clothesline, Lesnar runs into a flapjack. Bubba hits the jabs and Bionic Elbow, Lesnar shrugs it off and tries another clothesline but Bubba ducks it again, hitting a german suplex for a nearfall. This gives JR the perfect chance to mention Lesnar's undefeated streak. Brock Lesnar reverses an irish whip, sending Bubba into the corner but runs into a back elbow. Bubba Ray hits a senton from the top rope and covers, but Heyman breaks it up from ringside.
Bubba Ray chases Heyman around ringside, Heyman slides in the ring and traps the referee in the corner, blocking his vision but Bubba tackles Lesnar to the ground. Paul Heyman turns around to see Bubba and takes a wild swing, Bubba dodges it with ease and sends Heyman into the turnbuckles. Heyman is set up for the Bubba Bomb, but Lesnar breaks it up and hits a sloppy F5 for the win.
WINNER: BROCK LESNAR
Bubba Ray Dudley got more in this match than I expected him too. He had a decent competitive match with Lesnar (which was easier in his first run).Paul Heyman did enough for me to find it entertaining and his presence made a difference in the match. Which is all I can ask for from a manager. Brock did still look green during this match, but it was only half way into his rookie year.– [** ¼] match but personally 4/10
