So my break's over. I have to get back to these. I
decided to throw a random goal of reviewing matches from 250
different wrestlers or tag teams throughout 2020. It doesn't seem
difficult and may end up increasing or decreasing it as time goes
on, depending on the amount of crossover. Since it's Royal Rumble season I decided
to start with Royal Rumble winners. I'll start with the first (televised) winner, Jim Duggan. Although these will be in a random
order just depending on how I feel.
Dino Bravo is already in the ring and calling
himself the Worlds Strongest Man due to his Royal Rumble 1990
benchpress segment. Earthquake and Jimmy Hart in his corner. Jim Duggan enters in a motorised ring with an American flag.
Jesse Ventura says it should be a Canadian flag since they are in
Canada. Jim Duggan also has his trusty 2x4, which is enough to clear
the ring when he enters.
DINO
BRAVO VS.JIM DUGGAN
WWF
Wrestlemania VI (1st April 1990)
The bell rings
and they circle and lock up, Dino Bravo shoves Duggan away and
celebrates. They lock up again as Ventura and Monsoon discuss the
strength of Dino Bravo. Bravo gets a headlock but is sent off the
ropes, Duggan doesn't budge to the shoulder block and ducks a
clothesline, knocking Bravo down with one of his own. Duggan attacks
with lefts and rights, an irish whip sends Bravo off the ropes into a
backdrop. Dino Bravo is sent over the top rope to the floor, Jimmy
Hart and Earthquake help him to his feet. Dino Bravo takes his
frustration out on the steel steps before getting back in the ring.
Duggan blocks of Bravo's wild swings and an atomic drop puts him on
his arse. Dino Bravo gets to his feet in the corner, not wanting to
take a powder outside in case it gives him flashbacks, Jim Duggan
gets on the middle rope for a combination of right hands and Ventura
rightly calls him out on pushing the referee.
Gorilla Monsoon
doesn't give a shit, claiming he didn't see it and they miss Bravo's
comeback. He is sent to the opposite corner but Duggan misses the
charge, hitting the turnbuckle with his head. Bravo strikes at Duggan
as he gets to his feet, so Duggan stops getting to his feet. Jim
Duggan is sent off the ropes into a kick to the gut, Gorilla finally
ends the bickering to call an inverted atomic drop. Dino Bravo chokes
Duggan on the mat, forcing the referee to get involved, as his back
is turned Earthquake gets a cheap shot in on Jim Duggan. Dino Bravo
hits the ropes and connects with a jumping elbow drop for a nearfall.
Dino Bravo sends Duggan's head into the top turnbuckle and Duggan
stumbles around the ring. Duggan's head hits a second turnbuckle and
that wakes him up, he uses the ropes for momentum, cutting Bravo off
with a right hand. They cross the ring as Duggan backs Bravo with
punches, but a kick to the midsection drops Duggan.
Dino Bravo stomps
at Duggan and sends him into the corner, but runs into a knee strike.
Jim Duggan comes out of the corner with a clothesline, then a second
and third. Jimmy Hart gets on the apron as Duggan sets up in the
Three-Point Stance in the corner. Earthquake grabs Duggan's leg
offscreen, justifying Ventura's argument and Duggan tries to bring
Earthquake into the ring. The referee moves over to Duggan and
Earthquake as Jimmy Hart throws the 2x4 to Bravo. Duggan hits
Earthquake with a right hand over the top rope, and is able to get
hold of his 2x4 before Bravo. He kicks Bravo in the gut and hits him
over the back with the 2x4 for the win.
WINNER: JIM DUGGAN
After the match, Earthquake gets in the ring and starts attacking Jim Duggan, with Jimmy Hart cheering him on. Duggan is hit with rights, elbow drops and his running seated senton.
This was a good match. Although the Countryman being
booed is a strange concept for me at the beginning, it made sense
with Duggan's popularity. The finish was a bit too heelish, but they
probably didn't expect the USA chant during the match.– [**] match
but personally 3/10
