Today I'm going to post the first two matches from Deadly Games at Survivor Series 1998. This tournament was one branch of many in the McMahon
vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin feud. Whilst trying to dethrone Austin, Mr. McMahon
turned to Dude Love, who couldn't get the job done. This made Dude
Love fragile, reverting back to Mankind. Mankind changed attire,
attempting to dress in a suit to copy his mentor, Mr. McMahon. Mr
McMahon kept Mankind's opponent to himself before the event but put
this match on first. The event's opening video focuses on tonight's
14-man Deadly Games Tournament for the vacant WWF Championship.
Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler are on commentary. They
welcome us to the show before showing tonight's tournament brackets.
Mr. McMahon hobbles out with Big Bossman, Sargeant Slaughter, Pat
Patterson & Gerald Briscoe. He introduces Mankind and the fans
chant for HBK. You can dream. He reads over some (technically
accurate) statements about Mankind's opponent to put him over and
announces the man soon to be known as Gillberg. Jim Ross mocks him for being a
school football coach as Mankind brings him into the ring over the
top.
Duane
Gill VS. Mankind (First Round Match)
WWF
Survivor Series 1998 (15th
November 1998)
The match starts, Mankind stomps at Gill on the ground hits the double-arm DDT and rolls Duane Gill up for an easy victory.
WINNER: MANKIND
It was nothing as a match but it began the story of
the night in the right way and Gillberg got a pay day so it's hard to
complain.– As a match it's not ratable, but personally I like it so
1.5/10
