Today marks the anniversary of The Hardy Boyz making their professional wrestling debuts. They also seem to have retired as of the time of writing, but in wrestling, you never know. Both of these teams were picking up a fanbase early in their careers. The winner of this match faces the Acolytes for the titles. Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. This match was supposed to be contested on Heat, but the champions ran in and had the match thrown out, so Shawn Michaels rescheduled it and added the stipulation.
EDGE & CHRISTIAN VS. THE HARDY BOYZ (#1 contenders WWF Tag Team Championships)
WWF King of the Ring 1999 (27th June 1999)
The Brood attack the Hardyz as they get in the ring. Edge sends Jeff over to the floor as Matt Hardy grabs a headlock, so he and Christian start. Christian sends Matt off the ropes but is knocked down with a shoulder tackle. Christian goes prone, then leapfrogs and Matt runs into a dropkick. Christian takes Matt down with an arm drag but Matt gets to his feet and backs Christian into the corner. Matt breaks and hits Christian with rights before tagging Jeff in. The Hardy Boyz double-team Christian in the corner with kicks and Jeff Hardy sends Christian into the turnbuckle. Christian is sent across the ring twice but counters the third, lifting Jeff into a fireman's carry and dropping him into a gutbuster. Edge tags in and Jeff eats a double hip toss. Edge sends Jeff into the corner but gets caught with a headscissors. Edge gets to his feet and knocks Jeff down with a right, Jeff gets back on his feet so Edge shoves him into the corner, going on the attack. Jeff Hardy is sent across the ring and Edge counters the headscissors, hitting an Alabama Slam to Jeff but Edge climbs to the top rope and lands on Jeff's boots. Jeff Hardy makes the tag and Edge gets sent into the corner. The Hardy Boyz hit Poetry in Motion and Edge staggers out of the corner into a clothesline.
Edge rolls out of the way of an elbow drop and Christian gets the tag, he sends Matt into the corner but runs into a boot. Matt Hardy gets a chinlock on the mat but Christian gets to his feet. Christian tries to elbow free but Matt has hold of his hair. Christian grabs Matt's hair to keep him in place and fires off right hands. Matt Hardy counters an Impaler into a northern lights suplex but Christian slides out the back of a scoop slam and hits the second attempt. They both make the tag and Edge decapitates Jeff with a clothesline. Matt is knocked down too and Jeff fights them both. Gangrel is on the apron as Edge hits a DDT to Jeff, but Michael Hayes attacks Edge from behind and Matt hits a northern lights suplex. Christian breaks up the pin then gets sent out to the floor. Edge spears Michael Hayes and Matt Hardy but Jeff catches him with a right hand. Edge is sent back into the corner but catches himself on the turnbuckles and hits Jeff with a spear in midair! 1, 2, no! Christian sends Matt Hardy out to the floor as Gangrel sends Hayes into the ringpost. Christian hits the springboard plancha over the top rope on Matt. Gangrel tries to mist Jeff Hardy but hits Edge instead, Jeff Hardy hits a neckbreaker and covers for the win.
WINNERS: THE HARDY BOYZ
Far from their best match. It was a match to break up the tournament. At the end, it picked up but apart from Edge hitting a mid-air spear there's not a lot to see in this match. – WORKRATE: 2.25/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 2/5 OVERALL 4.25/10
