Gorilla Monsoon and “Superstar” Billy Graham are on commentary tonight. They hype the main event, getting interrupted by the Rougeaus' entrance. Davey Boy Smith walks Matilda down to ringside, followed by Dynamite Kid. Matilda chases The Rougeaus out of the ring. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers offer out a handshake but aren't taken up on their offer.
THE FABULOUS ROUGEAU BROTHERS VS. BRITISH BULLDOGS
WWF Summerslam 1988 (29th August 1988)
Jacques Rougeau starts with Davey Smith. Smith hits right hands in the corner and sends Rougeau's head into the turnbuckle as the crowd counts along. Jacques scrambles the length of the ring and Davey sends him in the opposite corner. Jacques Rougeau gets to the middle of the ring before collapsing in a heap. Davey Smith knocks Rougeau into the ropes, again Rougeau's skull meets the top turnbuckle, this time in his own corner. Raymond Rougeau tags into the match and spends Jacques 5 seconds embracing him and checking for cuts. Raymond and Bulldog lock-up to a stalemate. The second collar-elbow tie up backs Davey into the corner but he turns it around. Bulldog keeps Ray Rougeau against the ropes forcing the referee to break it. Ray takes a cheap shot over the referee's interference knocking Bulldog down. Raymond Rougeau sends Bulldog into the corner and fancies a change of scenery so sends him across the ring. British Bulldog cartwheels out of a monkey flip attempt. Raymond thought he had it, so he brags to the crowd but turns around into an arm drag. Dynamite Kid tags into the match and The British Bulldogs knock Ray down with a double headbutt.
Dynamite Kid gets a standing headlock but Raymond sends him across the ring, Kid knocks him down with a shoulder tackle, planting him again as Ray stands up into an arm drag. Dynamite keeps Rougeau grounded in the middle of the ring. Jacques Rougeau trolls before trolling for a USA chant from the apron, but of course doesn't get one. Ray gets to his feet and sends Dynamite Kid off the ropes. Ray Rougeau leapfrogs Dynamite and drops to the mat for a monkey flip, Dynamite is able to stop his momentum and catches Rougeau off guard with a falling headbutt. Dynamite Kid keeps Rougeau in a top wristlock on the mat, Rougeau gets to his feet but that allows Smith to tag back in, coming off the top rope with an ax handle. Raymond Rougeau reverses an irish whip but ducks too early, allowing Davey Boy Smith to get a nearfall from a sunset flip. Jacques Rougeau tries to illegally help his brother, allowing the Bulldogs to switch without a tag. The referee allows it because it's nice to see the bad guys get a taste of their own medicine.
Dynamite Kid is sent off the ropes but he brings the Japanese clotheslines straight into our living rooms and Raymond Rougeau's throat. Rougeau's cranium meets Davey's boot as he tags himself in, he sends Rougeau across the ring, Rougeau struggles for a sunset flip but I think gets a nearfall, Smith springs into a jackknife cover for a nearfall of his own. It looked like that was supposed to be a longer sequence, but Bulldog brings it to their feet and tags Dynamite back in. Dynamite Kid keeps Rougeau in a wristlock, allowing him close to Jacques but just out of reach of the tag. Dynamite Kid kicks at Rougeau's shoulder before getting the tag himself. Rougeau is sent across the ring and runs into a double shoulder tackle and Davey Smith gets a nearfall and applies a chinlock. We get a view of Matilda as Rougeau gets to his feet and sends Smith off the ropes. Raymond Rougeau drops down and Jacques trips Davey Smith from ringside. Raymond Rougeau gets the tag, allowing Jacques to start kicking at Smith's hamstring. Davey Smith gets his right knee twisted and turned before Rougeau slams it into the mat. Davey Boy Smith kicks off a spinning toe hold but the monkey flip is cut off with a kick to the knee.
Ray Rougeau tags back in and Smith's lower body is turned into a wishbone. Ray keeps up the work on Davey's right knee with kicks and makes a quick tag. Jacques Rougeau hits a running cannonball onto Davey Boy Smith. Jacques Rougeau uses a standing toe hold to keep Davey Boy on the mat and drags him over so he can take a cheap shot at Dynamite Kid on the apron. Raymond Rougeau enters as the referee's distracted with Dynamite, another wishbone double-team counts as a tag. Raymond Rougeau's standing toe hold had more pressure to it but Davey Boy Smith is able to kick him off. Rougeau sends Smith across the ring and hits a back body drop. Jacques tags in and applies a standing leg lock to Smith but it's countered into a small package for a nearfall. Davey Boy Smith tries to crawl for a tag but is dragged across the ring allowing The Rougeaus to tag instead. Ray goes back to the toe hold but Davey gets to his feet, he sends Raymond Rougeau across the ring with a standing monkey flip and Dynamite Kid gets the hot tag!
Dynamite Kid sends Rougeau from corner to corner and hits a snap suplex followed by an elbow drop. Dynamite Kid gets a nearfall from a falling headbutt. Billy Graham said a few headbutts might have worked as Dynamite hits a back suplex, Dynamite Kid covers again but Ray gets his foot on the rope. Dynamite Kid dumps him to the outside so Davey can send him into the guardrail and fight of Jacques with ease. Jacques Rougeau decides to take a lap around ringside before checking on his brother, tripping over Ray's ankle as he gets back. Jacques Rougeau is helped back into the ring near his corner but Dynamite stuns Jacques with a right hand. Raymond is brought over to the Bulldogs' corner and meets Davey's boot before a tag is made. Davey Boy Smith hits a running powerslam and Jacques saves the match as Dynamite and Davey switch behind the referee's back. Ray Rougeau meets the top turnbuckle with his skull, Dynamite climbs to the second rope but Jacques interferes with a back suplex, Dynamite Kid's reaction to that looked worrying to me. Jacques Rougeau gets the tag, slamming Dynamite Kid down and hitting a knee drop for 2.
Davey Boy tries to help Dynamite from the double-team efforts but prolongs it as Raymond chokes Dynamite on the top rope. Raymond Rougeau tags back in for an assisted gutbuster and goes back out again. Dynamite Kid gets sent off into the ropes, running into an abdominal stretch in the middle of the ring. Davey Boy Smith breaks up the abdominal stretch but it allows The Rougeaus to switch out again, the referee checks Dynamite's arm but he sends Raymond over with a hip toss, but he didn't seem to get it all. Dynamite Kid fights back but Raymond brings him over to the Rougeau corner, tagging in Jacques. Raymond slams Dynamite Kid down for a running splash from Jacques which gets him a nearfall. Dynamite Kid is trapped in a double reverse chinlock but lifts himself with Jacques weight on top of him, the referee is distracted by the partners on the apron, giving Davey Smith particular attention, which allows Raymond to cheapshot Dynamite, keeping Jacques in control of the match. Jacques Rougeau drops his elbow to the top of Dynamite's head and tags back out.
Dynamite Kid is forced back into the turnbuckles and The Rougeaus stomp him in their corner. Raymond Rougeau snapmares Dynamite Kid over into another double reverse chinlock and Dynamite gets to his feet again turning it into a backpack sleeperhold, but only momentarily as Raymond Rougeau is backed into the corner. Dynamite Kid tries to make the tag, but he's moving too slowly as Jacques Rougeau comes back in for his team. Jacques attacks Davey on the apron. The referee keeps Davey Boy Smith on the apron as Dynamite Kid is able to roll Rougeau over into a small package! The referee eventually gets in position to count but was so slow Dynamite only gets a nearfall. Jacques Rougeau goes back to the abdominal stretch near his corner, making a show of getting the referee's attention for the tag. Raymond Rougeau measures Kid up for a superkick to the exposed midsection and he covers for a nearfall. Dynamite Kid makes it to his feet in the front facelock and makes the tag, but the referee doesn't see it and sends Davey Boy back to the apron which allows the Rougeaus to switch illegally. The referee gives them the benefit of the doubt. Jacques Rougeau tries to pin Dynamite's shoulders to the mat but gets 2. Dynamite Kid finally gets the tag to Davey Boy Smith. He sends Jacques into the ropes but there's no one there for the standing dropkick. Jacques Rougeau sends Davey across the ring but keeps hold of the irish whip, the second attempt is reversed by Smith and he lifts Jacques Rougeau overhead before crotching him on the top rope. Raymond Rougeau tries to break up the cover but Davey avoids it. This brings Dynamite Kid back into the action and The Rougeaus bump heads, thanks to the Bulldogs. Davey Boy Smith sends Jacques' head into the top turnbuckle, knocking him down. Dynamite Kid is lifted into the air by his partner and dropped onto Rougeau with a headbutt, but the time limit expires as he goes for the cover.
TIME LIMIT DRAW
I liked this match more than I thought I would. Everything that the Bulldogs did got a kick out of the crowd, with The Rougeaus doing all they could to survive whilst making themselves look like the dominant team. There were some clunky moments in the match and the phantom tags started to get tedious as it progressed (not to mention hard to follow) but The Rougeaus did what they had to just to survive the Bulldogs, with Davey and Dynamite making the most of what little momentum they got. – WORKRATE: 2.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 2.75/5 OVERALL 5.25/10
