The opening video to the event goes back to the announcement of `Iron' Mike Tyson being the Special Guest Enforcer for the Wrestlemania XIV main event, including his jab to Shawn Michaels. That moves on to Mr McMahon making the famous match that could be ended by his hand only between Stone Cold and Dude Love. Almost a year later Shane McMahon fast-counted as Special Referee to move the championship from Austin to Undertaker. This finally lead to Jesse “The Body” Ventura being made the Special Guest Referee for tonight's main event as Austin defends his title against Mankind and Triple H in a triple threat. Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary at ringside. At this point, King was going for a Mayoral run, but it didn't go well if my recollection is correct. They take us to Jesse Ventura laying down the law to Triple H and Chyna backstage, Triple H says he'll break every rule Ventura makes. Chris Jericho is seen backstage, The Fink is running up to him backstage and gets a bollocking for being late.
On to the way to the ring first is Jeff Jarrett, Debra walks down with him but he sends her to the back, getting an “asshole” chant from the crowd. D'Lo Brown is seen backstage with Debra and she returns with him. Lawler is happy the Puppies are back. Both of D'Lo's championships are on the line in this match, with 4 more later in the show. Commentary debate whether they're cheering D'Lo or the puppies.
D'LO BROWN © VS. JEFF JARRETT
(WWF Intercontinental Championship &WWF European Championship)
WWF Summerslam (22nd August 1999)
Jeff Jarrett jumpstarts the match attacking the champion. D'Lo Brown reverses an irish whip but Jarrett ducks a clothesline but is caught with a jumping forearm. Jarrett runs into a hip toss and D'Lo slaps the taste out of his mouth before sending him across the ring and catching him in a belly to belly suplex. Another irish whip allows D'Lo to catch Jarrett in a snap powerslam, he covers for 1 but Jarrett rolls out of the ring. Jarrett tries to sneak up on the champion again but is cut off with a pair of right hands. Jarrett reverses an irish whip but jumps into a Lo-Down for a nearfall. We see Debra at ringside as Jarrett counters an irish whip into a sleeperhold. D'Lo Brown turns it around into a delayed vertical suplex and panders to the crowd before waiting on the middle rope for Jarrett to get to his feet. Jarrett cuts Brown off with either an elbow or a side slam, I'm not sure which and to be honest I don't think Jarrett is either. Jarrett knocks Brown through the ropes with a standing dropkick and sends him into the barrier with a baseball slide.
Jeff Jarrett tells Debra to get away and sends D'Lo into the ring steps. D'Lo's cranium meets the top of the steps and Jarrett breaks the referee's count. D'Lo sidesteps an ax handle attempt from the apron, sending Jarrett into the barricade. D'Lo Brown winds up and clotheslines Jarrett into the crowd, then tells the ref to be quiet. Jarrett lands on his feet from a suplex attempt, bringing himself back to ringside and shoving D'Lo into the apron. D'Lo Brown's skull collides with the ringpost and Jarrett breaks the referee's count again. Jarrett argues with the referee before bringing D'Lo back into the ring. D'Lo is sent into the turnbuckle and Jarrett uses the top rope to work on D'Lo's arm. D'Lo Brown backs Jarrett across the ring with right hands and sends him into the corner but runs into a back elbow. Jarrett goes back to the arm, hitting a tornado arm breaker from the middle rope and turning his attention back to Debra. Jarrett kicks at D'Lo's arm and uses the rope again for the whole 5 count but isn't disqualified because... Reasons? The fans are chanting “we want puppies” as Jarrett sends D'Lo into the turnbuckle again. The mounted punches are interrupted by a Stun Gun by Brown on the turnbuckle. Jeff Jarrett is sent corner to corner but slides under Brown, D'Lo kicks him in the gut and hits a sitout powerbomb but can't capitalise.
Both men get to their feet beating the count and each misses a right hand, Jarrett runs into a tilt-a-whirl slam. D'Lo Brown hits a jumping heel kick and a standing Leg drop on Jarrett for a nearfall. Jeff Jarrett hits Brown with a right hand but D'Lo's receipt has more sting in it. D'Lo Brown hits a back suplex and signals for the top rope, he eats shit on a somersault senton attempt and Debra climbs on the apron, distracting both the referee and Jarrett. Which I'm sure made both of their wives feel great. Jarrett threatens Debra with the guitar as the referee holds him back, still trying to get her to get down. Mark Henry runs down to the ring and grabs the guitar from Jeff Jarrett as JR mentions he's been training with D'Lo. Mark Henry double crosses D'Lo, smashing the guitar over his back! Jeff Jarrett covers D'Lo for the three count.
WINNER: JEFF JARRETT (NEW WWE INTERCONTINENTAL & EUROPEAN CHAMPION)
D'Lo Brown had Jarrett's number in this match, and Jarrett's only real offense (the arm work) meant nothing, although it did lead to a cool spot with the arm breaker. It took both Mark Henry and Debra turning on D'Lo along with a guitar shot to get the job done because Jeff Jarrett is a prick. Yet it didn't seem overbooked for its short duration. – WORKRATE: 2.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 2.75/5 OVERALL 5.25/10
Debra gets in the ring to celebrate with Jarrett and Henry, because why stick with the losing side?
This match is available on the WWE DVD and Blu Ray release “The Best of the Attitude Era: Volume 1”.
