BARON CORBIN VS. SAMOA JOE

Rich Brennan, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves are on commentary for this match. Baron Corbin stalking his way out to the ring, Byron Saxton says Corbin doesn't like having to pay dues, never having to so far in his career, Corey Graves says that's something Corbin's 6 ft 8 frame allows. Samoa Joe is out, focused for his first TakeOver match, he's certainly more than paid his dues on his way to NXT, Baron Corbin's attitude pisses Joe off more than lone drivers in the carpool lane.

NXT TAKEOVER: BROOKLYN (22nd August 2015)


  The fans chant for Joe as they lock up and reach a stalemate. Joe grabs a standing armbar as Graves mentions he's a submission specialist. Baron Corbin gets trapped in a front chancery and sends Joe into the corner. Samoa Joe tries a Coquina clutch but Baron Corbin is able to slip out and escape the ring. Baron Corbin kicks Joe in the gut as he gets back in, knocking him into the corner. Samoa Joe reverses an irish whip, following Corbin to sandwich him with a back elbow, Joe hits a leaping enziguri in the corner and Corbin is out on his feet. He stumbles out of the corner into a running dropkick by Joe that sends him out to the floor. Baron Corbin cuts off a dive through the ropes with a forearm, following up with a slap to Joe's face. Baron Corbin hits a trio of short Avalanches in the corner and covers Joe, but Samoa Joe kicks out at 1. Baron Corbin kicks Joe in the ribs as Saxton mentions that Joe did so much before coming to NXT it's easy to research him and his career. Samoa Joe ducks a right hand by Corbin, laying in clubbing blows to the back. Joe kicks Corbin and chops his chest. Baron Corbin is able to get a shot in to cut of the jab combination, but Joe ducks a clothesline and rolls Corbin up!

Baron Corbin kicks out but Joe uses the momentum to roll through to a single leg boston crab. Baron Corbin starts reaching for the ropes so Joe changes it up to a crossface, forcing Corbin to reach with his far arm, as Corbin inches towards the ropes Joe pulls back on that arm too, like a Rings of Saturn. Baron Corbin reaches his leg out, finally getting to the ropes and Joe holds on for 3 of his 5 count. Corbin throws Joe to the floor using his trunks, trying to buy some time. Corbin goes out to the apron, which Brennan thinks is a mistake, he is proven right as Joe trips Corbin from the apron to the floor with a clothesline. Samoa Joe launches Corbin into the barricade and Byron Saxton needs a pillow for his lap. Samoa Joe takes it back into the ring but Corbin pulls a heel hook out of nowhere! Samoa Joe slowly crawls to the ropes to break the hold, the long journey from the centre of the ring. Baron Corbin lets go just before being disqualified. Samoa Joe tries to keep weight off the leg as he chops Corbin but gets caught with a swinging slam. Corbin covers for 2. Samoa Joe uses the corner to get to his feet and avoids a splash. He runs into a Corbin superkick in the corner, but hits another enziguri! That did some damage to Joe's leg as they're both on the mat. The race to vertical is neck and neck, with Joe laying in the first punch, well a combination of punches. Baron Corbin is able to block a couple of shots rallying with right hands of his own. They exchange forearms and Samoa Joe open palm slaps Corbin silly. Baron Corbin blocks a kick and knocks the taste out of Joe's mouth with a slap, but Joe hits a spinning back fist! Baron Corbin staggers into the corner but he fights off the Musclebuster, he boots Joe across the ring and meets him with a big boot. Baron Corbin hits a terrible suplex and covers Joe for a nearfall. Corbin stomps Joe in the corner, going back with right hands as Saxton says Corbin's frustrated. I'd be frustrated too if my suplex was that bad. Baron Corbin sends Joe off for the End of Days but Joe locks in a Coquina clutch, but he doesn't have it all as Corbin elbows free and sends him to the mat. Baron Corbin hits a standing spinebuster to Samoa Joe and covers, 1, 2, no! Joe kicks out, turning Baron Corbin over into another Coquina clutch! Baron Corbin struggles but can't escape before the referee calls the match in Joe's favour.

The commentary team kept mentioning that it was Samoa Joe's third Coquina clutch to protect Baron Corbin. If you watch the match though it's the first time he properly got it in properly, so for those that care Joe doesn't look too much of a bitch in his TakeOver debut. They got in, did some shit and left, which is appreciated. Putting this fight before the double main event was a nice palate cleanser of sorts. –WORK RATE: 2.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT: 2/5 OVERALL: 4.5/10
