KIDMAN (C) VS. MIKEY WHIPWRECK

This is Mikey Whipwreck's WCW debut, since today is his birthday and it happens to be the week I switch things up to a “Today in Wrestling” type of deal, it seemed appropriate to use it. WCW didn't want to waste any time with this big signing (….and they laughed at me for starting with this)

the signing isn't big enough for the opening package, seeing the hard work being put in to bbuild it for “Hollywood” Hogan's title defense against Ric Flair. Mike Tenay, Bobby Heenan and Tony Schiovane are on commentary, beginning the show talking about the barbed wire steel cage. They take it to Mean Gene, who plugs the hotline for the inside scoops and says the pencil pushers at WCW won't sanction matches at Uncensored, they get too wild. Moving us on to a video package of Kevin Nash and Rey Mysterio Jr. The latter if whom has had to unmask and reveal to the world he looks 14. Even though he's a surprise, Mikey still enters the match first, commentary talk about the challenge he has ahead of him. Kidman has been on a roll lately, for some reason they just used his surname at this point. The Brain calls the debutant “Mikey Shipwreck” as Kidman makes his way to the ring.

BILLY KIDMAN © VS. MIKEY WHIPRECK (WCW Cruiserweight Championship)
WCW Uncensored (14th March 1999)

They circle and lock up, Kidman gets a hammerlock but Mikey elbows out. Mikey hits Kidman with lefts and no one mentions he's a southpaw. Mikey locks in a headlock but Kidman pushes him to the ropes but gets knocked down with a shoulder tackle. Mikey goes over Kidman then under a leapfrog, Kidman lands on his feet from a tilt-a-whirl and Whipwreck reverses an irish whip then catches Kidman in a front chancery and drops to one knee. Schiovane gives Whipwreck credit for slowing the match down. Mikey hits another left hand and a tilt-a-whirl headscissors to send Kidman across the ring. Mike Tenay explains it's Whipwreck to Brain, falling into the trap. Mikey hits more left Hands and elbows Kidman in the back of the head. Mikey sends Kidman off the ropes but Kidman blocks a hip toss, Mikey blocks the counter so Kidman flips himself behind Whipwreck, Whipwreck ducks a clothesline but it is hit with a dropkick, Whipwreck ends up being sent out of the ring with a headscissors by the champion.

Kidman sends Mikey Whipwreck into the guardrail and back into the ring, flying off the top turnbuckle with a cross body for 2. Billy Kidman tries to clothesline Mikey out of the ring but Mikey catches it, sending himself into Kidman so they both go out to the floor. Not a bad move, as approved by Tony Schiovane on commentary. Kidman's head gets sent into the rail as they walk around ringside, he does manage to reverse an irish whip sending Mikey into the side of the ring but Mikey lifts Kidman, dropping his throat over the guardrail. Kidman is rolled back into the ring for a nearfall. Whipreck spits on Kidman and ties his legs up before falling back, Whipwreck cranks on Kidman's neck too, using the top of Kidman's head. Mikey releases the hold making Schiovane think he didn't have it in properly as Mikey Whipwreck gets booed. Mikey drapes Kidman's throat across the bottom rope for a slingshot guillotine leg drop. Mikey places Kidman in the corner and hits him with a chop, Whipreck hits the second chop but is sent into the corner from an irish whip. Mikey staggers out of the corner into a falling clothesline but Kidman can't cover. As he gets to his feet Kidman stomps Whipwreck into the corner.

Kidman brings Mikey Whipwreck to his feet, sending him across the ring. Mikey blocks a hip toss, Kidman tries for a standing hurricanrana but Mikey powerbombs him down. I swear there was a whole craze about not being able to powerbomb Kidman, of all people, Mikey freakin' Whipwreck did it! Mikey covers on the momentous occasion but only gets a nearfall. Mikey grabs a modified neck lock with Kidman on his back, North-South stance to any MMA fans. Mikey releases and Kidman sits up so the challenger applies a rear chin lock. The fans cheer Kidman to his feet where Kidman elbows free, Kidman runs the ropes and Mikey ducks too quickly on a backdrop, getting kicked in the chest. Kidman sends Whipwreck over the top rope to the floor with a clothesline. Kidman balances on the top rope, diving onto Whipwreck with a cross body but Kidman landed on his knee too. Kidman brings Whipwreck back to the ring and hits his head on the apron. Mikey starts fighting back, they both stand on the apron but Mikey has the advantage, draping Kidman across the ropes and hitting a slingshot elbow drop. Mikey covers 1, 2, Kidman gets his foot on the bottom rope.

I thought WCW wasn't sanctioning these matches, how does that work? Mikey asks the same thing of the referee who points out where the rope is. Thanks, pal. Mikey lifts Kidman up for a suplex, using the top rope as a slingshot but Kidman reverses into a DDT. Mikey Whipreck sends Kidman to the floor from the top turnbuckle. Mikey climbs up but dives into the guardrail as Kidman stepped out of his path. Kidman gets sent into the crowd with a backdrop, slowly getting to his feet after hitting the concrete. Mikey dives over the guardrail but Kidman ducks, sending Mikey crashing to the floor in the crowd too. Kidman uses the guard rail to get to his feet and sends Mikey back to ringside with an irish whip. Mikey Whipwreck drop toe hold's Kidman into the steel steps, buying some time. Mikey sends Kidman back into the ring and covers for a nearfall, so maybe he wasn't buying much time, that seems counterproductive. Mikey hits a side Russian leg sweep for another nearfall. Mikey sends Kidman into the corner but Kidman reverses an irish whip sending Mikey across the ring. Kidman follows with a running clothesline and sends Mikey across the ring again. This time Kidman misses and hits the corner, Mikey covers for a third nearfall.

Mikey gets distracted by the crowd, which gives Kidman a chance to roll him up for 2. Mikey gets to his feet and hits a running clothesline for the momentum, then a snap suplex floating over for a cover, but only 2. Tony Schiovane proves he's never seen Whipwreck before by claiming he will make WCW's cruiserweight division more competitive. Kidman lifts his boot as Whipreck runs into the corner and a BK bomb in the middle of the ring for 2. Whipwreck hits a spinning neckbreaker as they get to their feet and climbs to the top rope but Kidman cuts him off. Mikey holds on to the top rope to block a superplex and sends Kidman down to the mat. Mikey Whipwreck hits a flying clothesline for 2. Kidman lands on his feet from a back suplex attempt and drops Whipwreck with a double underhook facebuster. Kidman covers but Mikey still kicks out after 2. Mikey Whipwreck knees Kidman in the gut and sits him on the top turnbuckle for a back superplex, sending Kidman right over to his front. Whipwreck covers for a nearfall. Mikey Whipwreck tries another powerbomb but Kidman counters to a facebuster! Kidman drags Mikey away from the centre of the ring and hits a Shooting Star Press for the win.

WINNER: KIDMAN (STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion)

It's not what I'd call a standard championship defense from Kidman, Mikey got in more than I thought he would. Looking on Kidman's level easily, which looks crazy on paper. Mikey was seen as a heel and Kidman a face, which is the opposite of what I suspected looking at this match but the fans were really for WCW guy Kidman not losing his title to someone coming from ECW, booing Mikey for breathing their air. The match itself though just seemed like a sequence of moves put together to head towards a finish, not enough for it to be a real match worth investing into, personally. – WORKRATE: 2/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 1.75/5 OVERALL 3.75/10
