MIL MUERTES VS. FENIX

When we return from the final break Mil Muertes and Fenix are in the ring. Dario Cueto appears from his office, and he's holding the Lucha Underground Championship. He brings it to the ring and says he's created a new match to honour the ancient warriors, which he calls Aztec Warfare. The winner of that match will win the championship on Lucha Underground's first show of 2017 in a couple of weeks when they return. As for tonight, Mil Muertes and Fenix will face off against each other in the main event. Winner enters the match last, and the loser has to enter first and outlast 19 other luchadores. When we come back again Muertes piefaces Fenix in the ring, the referee is struggling to keep them separate long enough to ring the bell.

MATCH 3: MIL MUERTES VS. FENIX

Fenix avoids Muertes early on and gets behind with a waistlock. That's quickly countered with a swift elbow, Muertes gets behind and clubs Fenix down. Muertes stomps Fenix on the mat, clubbing him again as he tries to get to his feet. Muertes brings Fenix up with a knuckle lock, but Fenix dazes him with a combination of kicks. Fenix sends Muertes across the ring with an awesome arm drag but runs into a big boot in the corner. Fenix fights Muertes from the apron and hits a missile dropkick from the top rope. Mil Muertes slides out of the ring for a breather, but Fenix follows with a springboard twisting plancha, wiping them both out. Fenix is able to beat the count at 8, with Mil barely following at 9. Fenix takes advantage of the one-second advantage but tries to pick up some speed too soon, running into a spear. Muertes brings Fenix over to the second rope for Catrina to get a cheap shot from ringside. Mil Muertes hits a DDT in the middle of the ring and covers, but can only get a nearfall. Mil Muertes gets a second nearfall from a running powerslam.

Mil Muertes sends Fenix across the ring, but Fenix handsprings back with an enziguri. Fenix tries a hurricanrana but gets caught with a powerbomb. Muertes gets 2 again and Vampiro and Striker blame him not hooking the leg. Muertes sends Fenix across the ring again and he handsprings back with a cutter! Fenix is slow to cover, only getting 2. Fenix goes out to the apron and jumps to the top rope, he dances across the top rope, jumping into a stiff right hand by Muertes. Mil Muertes picks Fenix up by the throat, dropping him with the Flatliner in the middle of the ring to pick up the victory and become #20 7th January in Aztec Warfare.

WINNER: MIL MUERTES

Damn, this was an awesome match after both of these guys already working tonight. Muertes just used his brutality to stay on top of Fenix, but if Fenix got his space he'd hit Muertes with something stunning out of nowhere. In the end, the need for fancy high-flying cost Fenix the match and Muertes remains undefeated. WORKRATE: 2.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 3/5 OVERALL: 5.5/10

EPISODE SUMMARY: They used the hour to set up for a bigger new year, essentially ushering in the “stage two” I spoke about with last week's episode. Mil Muertes looks purely unstoppable and all the main guys and girls in the promotion got some time to shine. Blue Demon Jr's really milking this injury, so I'm thinking he must be back for the next episode. Anyway, this one ran well, worked a nice story and sent Lucha Underground into the new year on a positive note. OVERALL 6.25/10
