MATCH 2: LUCHA DRAGONS (C) VS. THE VAUDEVILLAINS
(NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS)
NXT TakeOver: R Evolution
11th December 2014
Lucha Dragons enter first and their entrance is pretty cool. With both flying over the top rope into the ring. They defeated The Ascension at NXT Takeover: Fatal 4 Way to win the championships, being the only team able to knock The Ascension off their pedestal. The Vaudevillains get a black and white effect for their entrance, which is quite nifty. The Vaudevillains have been playing mind games with the champions but it's here in the ring they need to get it done. Graves says the Vaudevillains are great technical wrestlers too, and this should be a decent match.
Sin Cara starts off with Gotch, and takes control of his left arm, Gotch uses his size advantage to send Sin Cara across the ring, not a smart move as Sin Cara springboards off the middle rope with a cross body, but I think he hit him with more of a forearm. Cara clotheslines Gotch down then gets a springboard Asai moonsault on to Gotch, but only gets a 1 count on the cover. Cara kicks Gotch but gets caught in a wheelbarrow move, with English attempting to assist his partner, both Vaudevillains taken down as Sin Cara twists out of it, sending English back out of the ring. Kalisto gets the tag and they snapmare Gotch down and kick him. Kalisto steps over Gotch and hits an assisted wheelbarrow senton, another cover gets the Dragons another 1 count. Kalisto gets control of Gotch with a standing front facelock and tags back out. Kalisto sends Gotch across the ring and drops to the mat, Sin Cara hits Gotch with a standing dropkick. Sin Cara picks Gotch up in a suplex position then scoops him and slams him to the mat. Again Gotch kicking out quickly.
Gotch pushes Sin Cara against the ropes, but Sin Cara blocks a hip toss. Cara has Gotch set up for a backslide but English gets the tag without Sin Cara's knowledge. English is knocked off the apron as Sin Cara and Simon Gotch struggle for the advantage. Sin Cara breaks free and hits a sunset flip, but he can't bring Gotch down. English grabs at Sin Cara's ankles and drags him to the arena floor. English throws Sin Cara back in the ring and covers but only gets 1. English stomps at Sin Cara again and covers for the first nearfall of the match. The Lucha Dragons are the only team to beat the Vaudevillains in NXT. English starts grabbing at Sin Cara's mask and brings him to his feet. English gets a tag out and they sandwich Sin Cara with clotheslines before English has to get out of the ring. Gotch covers but Sin Cara kicks out quickly.
Gotch traps the left arm as he applies a chinlock, then cranks at Sin Cara's neck, with his whole weight above Sin Cara. Gotch rolls Sin Cara up but Cara quickly rolls out, Gotch keeps control of Sin Cara's head, not giving him time or space to pick up any kind of momentum. English gets another tag and they hit Sin Cara with double chops. The Vaudevillains won a #1 contenders battle royal for this opportunity. Gotch covers Sin Cara but again Sin Cara immediately kicks out. English sends Sin Cara into the corner, Sin Cara meets him with a back elbow. Sin Cara tries to use the top rope to get to his partner but English grabs a waistlock. English tries to roll Sin Cara up but Sin Cara tumbles through the ropes and hits the barricade on the outside. Baseball slide dropkick by English, but he's on the wrong side of the ring right now. English follows Sin Cara out of the ring and trips Kalisto. English throws Sin Cara back in the ring and drags him to the challengers' corner. Kalisto tries to get in to save his partner but the referee's having none of it. English beats Sin Cara down in The Vaudevillains' corner and gets the tag to Gotch.
English chokes Sin Cara with his boot on the apron right in front of the referee, before Gotch hits Sin Cara with a hard forearm. Gotch brings Sin Cara to his feet, and he tries to escape out of the corner, jackknife cover but Sin Cara rolls through, but Gotch has hold of his ankle. Gotch gets back to his feet and hits a back suplex for another 1 count. Gotch being very smart here, dragging Sin Cara further from his partner and grapevining the leg. English gets the tag and stomps on Sin Cara. Every time Sin Cara even rolls slightly towards Kalisto the challengers get hold of him and roll him back, cutting the ring in half. Gotch gets a chinlock on Sin Cara on the mat, using his forearms to try and obscure Sin Cara's vision. Sin Cara gets perched on the top rope in The Vaudevillains' corner. Sin Cara fights back and uses English as a stepping stone to launch himself across the ring. Kalisto is in with the hot tag and he sends English down with a springboard cross body. Gotch takes a kick to the chops on the apron. Kalisto ducks a clothesline and springboards off the middle rope with a corkscrew body press. Kalisto springs back off the ropes WITH NO HANDS and hits a jumping kick to English! Gotch enters the ring but Sin Cara was ready on the top turnbuckle for a cross body press. Kalisto rolls up Gotch, who isn't the legal man and kicks him in the head as he rolls through sending him out of the ring. English charges at the Lucha Dragons but he's sent over the top onto his partner. Lucha Dragons pump up the crowd and fly with stereo tope suicidas! Gotch was able to avoid it, and he throws Kalisto into the ring, Kalisto hits Solida del Sol and Lucha Dragons retain.
WINNERS: LUCHA DRAGONS (STILL NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS)
The Vaudevillains work an old-school, slow style. They were trying to wear the Lucha Dragons down throughout the whole match but they didn't really have a target. This made their heat segment, which took up most of the match, seem boring to me. They had some good double team work and mostly the strategy was sound but they really could have focused on a body part to make this match mean more. Lucha Dragons hit a couple of big moves and retained. This match didn't make me want to see more of The Vaudevillains in the slightest. The Revival do the same job and in a much more exciting way personally. – Rating: 3.1/10
