GREGORY HELMS (C) VS. SUPER CRAZY

 Before the match, JBL is backstage he is the WWE United States Champion and the #1 contender for Rey Mysterio’s World Heavyweight Championship. He says Rey’s feel-good story of 2006 comes to an end. He says Rey has taken on all comers but Bradshaw is a Wrestling God. Chavo Guerrero is shown near the interview area and JBL says Chavo will watch Rey lose his title like he watched Eddie Guerrero lose the title. Chavo Guerrero tells Layfield to stop living in the past.

We get a classic King of the Ring crowning with Steve Austin beating Jake Roberts in 1996. “This Fire Burns” by Killswitch Engage is tonight’s theme song, and would go on to be CM Punk’s theme tune soon after. Gregory Helms makes his way out first, he won the title back at Royal Rumble. Nick Patrick is the referee for this match. Super Crazy makes his way out on the lawnmower and Tazz says we could see a title change.

Super Crazy beat Kid Kash and Nunzio in a #1 contenders match a couple of weeks ago.Luiz Gonzales from the Arizona Diamondbacks tries to look like he’s enjoying himself before the bell rings.

Super Crazy rolls Helms up for 2, he gets another 2 with a jackknife and a third with a crucifix cover. Gregory Helms throws Crazy through the ropes but Super Crazy holds on, bringing himself back in the ring. Super Crazy takes Helms down with a drop toehold Super Crazy gets another 2 with what Tazz calls a Bandido. Gregory Helms sends Super Crazy over to the apron, and Super Crazy slingshots back in the ring over a charging Helms. Gregory Helms sends himself through the ropes. Nick Patrick stops Super Crazy from diving, but Super Crazy sticks his tongue out and dives over Patrick with a somersault onto Helms. Super Crazy gets a nearfall back in the ring as the fans chant E-C-Dub. Super Crazy climbs to the middle rope for punches in the corner but is dropped across the top rope. Gregory Helms hits a running neckbreaker and Super Crazy kicks out at 2. Helms hits a more methodical neckbreaker and covers for another 2.

  Gregory Helms puts Super Crazy in a crossface, Super Crazy gets back to his feet and fights out with right hands but runs into a back elbow from Gregory Helms. Helms drags Super Crazy towards the apron and attacks the top of his back. Helms covers again and gets 2. Super Crazy is locked in a submission on the mat, but he blocks a suplex hitting his own on Gregory Helms. It’s not enough to swing the momentum and Gregory Helms is able to trap Super Crazy’s arms in a double underhook, striking Super Crazy with knees to the head before covering again. Super Crazy gets his shoulder up at 2. Gregory Helms works a chinlock as Cole and Tazz argue about if he’s still a high flyer now he’s not The Hurricane. Super Crazy fights out of the chinlock and runs into a sleeperhold, Super Crazy slips out and rolls Helms up for another 2 count. Gregory Helms runs at Super Crazy with a kick, Gregory Helms jumps from the middle rope, Super Crazy lifts his boot but Helms catches it.

  Gregory Helms eats shit on an elbow drop, Super Crazy connects with a combination of right hands and sends Helms into the corner. Super Crazy runs into a back elbow but Helms runs into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Super Crazy connects with a right hand, back elbow and a dropkick before hitting a standing moonsault for 2. Super Crazy chops Helms and sends him into the corner. Helms sends Super Crazy over to the apron but gets caught with a right hand and a missile dropkick. Super Crazy covers for 2. Gregory Helms rolls out of the way of the top rope moonsault, Super Crazy ducks the Shining Wizard and a spinning kick hits Helms in the head. 1, 2, 2.9! Gregory Helms slips out of the back on a slam attempt and hits a third variation of a neckbreaker. Gregory Helms sends Super Crazy into the corner. They each avoid a charge ending with the champion rolling Crazy up for 2. Super Crazy rams Helms into the corner but runs into a boot. Helms hits a diving neckbreaker from the middle rope and covers, Super Crazy barely gets his shoulder up. Gregory Helms chokes Crazy on the mat. On his feet.

  Super Crazy connects with an overhand and knife-edge chop before being sent into the corner. Gregory Helms is launched into the top turnbuckle, but he catches Super Crazy with a powerbomb and gets the pin with his feet on the ropes.

WINNER:GREGORY HELMS (STILL WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

This was a decent match, which adds weight to Gregory Helms’ claim to bringing prestige back to the championship. Super Crazy looked like he belonged and the Phoenix crowd got behind him through the match. [***] 5.75/10
