Before the match, “Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with Vanna White and the tournament brackets, they talk about the first round and predictions for the quarterfinals. We cut back to the ring where Hercules is waiting with Bobby Heenan. Ultimate Warrior sprints to the ring for his WWF PPV debut.
Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura are on commentary for this
match. Howard Finkel is our ring announcer.
HERCULES VS.
ULTIMATE WARRIOR
WWF WrestleMania
IV (27th March 1988)
Monsoon and Ventura mention the chain snapping during a tug-of-war between these two. Hercules runs into Warrior with a shoulder tackle, but he doesn’t budge.
They both hit the ropes and collide in the middle of the ring before facing off. They lock up and Warrior backs Hercules into the corner, forcing a break. Hercules gets a cheap shot in over the referee’s head. It’s one of the Hebners but I don’t know which one. Ultimate Warrior fires back with a right hand and chops in the corner. Hercules is sent off the ropes, he ducks a clothesline and hits Ultimate Warrior with 3 to knock him down. Ultimate Warrior is the quickest, clotheslining Hercules down, then again before awkwardly dropping him on the top rope. Hercules ducks a right hand and sends Warrior over to the floor, Ultimate Warrior drags Hercules through the ropes and they exchange right hands on the outside, which we all know are 1.5x as effective as punches thrown in the ring. Hercules is sent into the ring steps before Warrior brings it back to the ring. Hercules pokes Warrior in the eye and connects with a combination of punches. Ultimate Warrior is knocked back into the ropes with a back elbow, but he attacks Hercules from behind. Warrior hits the 10 punches in the corner but Hercules absorbs it and hits an inverted atomic drop. Warrior’s head is sent into the top turnbuckle, if you’ve seen his promos then you realise that shouldn’t do much. The Ultimate Warrior reverses an irish whip but hits the turnbuckles as he charges at Hercules.
Hercules tries to lock in the Full Nelson, Ultimate
Warrior kicks off the turnbuckles and they both have their shoulders on the mat
1, 2, Ultimate Warrior lifts his shoulder for the 3.
WINNER: THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR
That was another strange finish, Ultimate Warrior got to look strong, but Hercules was a competitive opponent for the short match. It was just a break from the tournament action and following te time-limit draw it was a way to bring some energy into the arena before ethe next round. [½*] 1/10
After the match, Hercules thinks he’s won and Bobby Heenan raises
his hand before Finkel can make the announcement, Earl Hebner (maybe)
raises Warrior’s hand so Hercules grabs his chain and tries to choke Warrior
with his chain. Ultimate Warrior had his hand between the chain and his neck,
he powers out of the attempted chokehold and takes the chain from Hercules,
swinging it above his head.
