MANKIND VS. HENRY O. GODWINN

Before the match, Mr. Perfect is backstage with Camp Cornette. Vader throws something across the screen as we go back to the preshow footage. Jim Cornette accuses Jose Lothario of pulling a switch blade on him when he got decked and knocked into the corner. Vader made the save and faced off against Shawn Michaels. British Bulldog says Diana will be staying backstage for this match and Owen Hart says he can’t wait to get his hands on Sycho Sid.

Mankind should have been facing Jake Roberts tonight, with Godwinn being a last minute replacement. Mankind makes his way out first, with his music beginning to play as the interview finishes up. Henry has Hillbilly Jim in his corner for the match.

Jim Ross, Jerry “The King” Lawler and Vince McMahon are on commentary for this match.

MANKIND VS. HENRY O. GODWINN

WWF In Your House: International Incident (21st July 1996)

The bell rings, Henry O Godwinn calls for a hog and gets clipped from behind by Mankind. Mankind fires off right hands in the corner and bites on Godwinn’s forehead. Henry Godwinn tries to fight through the right hands but is sent off the ropes.

Mankind drops his head like a goat and Godwinn runs into it with his midsection. Henry O. Godwinn gets some right hands and sends Mankind off the ropes into a powerslam. Mankind is clotheslined over to the floor so he can have a walk outside. Back in the ring and they lock up, Mankind rakes the eye and clubs Godwinn down to the mat, he keeps up the offense until Godwinn hits a spinebuster out of the corner, followed by mounted rights. Mankind is immediately back to his feet, and I’ll mention here that Lawler is making jokes about Jake Roberts no-showing tonight’s event due to substance issues. It was supposed to build heat for a match between the two. Mankind cuts off Godwinn with a mule kick and goes back to biting the forehead. Henry Godwinn lifts Mankind on his back and rams him into the turnbuckles to break his grip but walks into a back elbow. Mankind sends Godwinn across the ring into the corner and hits a bulldog, then a jumping elbow drop before starting to pull his own hair out.

Henry O. Godwinn’s head meets the top turnbuckle and Mankind beats him down with right hands. Mankind makes some space and charges with a knee to the jaw, he goes out to the apron and leg drops Godwinn’s throat across the bottom rope. Lawler says he wishes Jake Roberts was here as Mankind removes one of the mats at ringside. Godwinn is sent through the ropes and is able to land on the remaining mat, but a neckbreaker gives him a landing on the concrete, although it looked like Mankind took ALL of it. Henry O. Godwinn is sent back in the ring and he connects with right hands from his knees, knocking Mankind into the corner. Mankind eats some right hands but reverses the irish whip and clotheslines Henry Godwinn in the corner. Mankind charges, but Godwinn ducks out of the way and Mankind hits the corner, knocking his head on the post. Henry Godwinn takes his chance, he connects with right hands and sends Mankind off the ropes, running through him with a clothesline. Mankind throws Godwinn back through the ropes but gets slammed onto the concrete!

Mankind gets up like he just fell on memory foam and gets back in the ring. We get a replay of Mankind going from the apron to concrete as Henry Godwinn calls for the Slop Drop but Mankind grabs the top rope, Mankind puts on the Mandible Claw and finishes the match.

WINNER: MANKIND

This was a basic match, a lot of punches between Mankind getting some of his notable stuff in. It did make me want to see a Mick Foley vs. Jake Roberts match, and besides a few moves being noticeably pulled it wasn’t a terrible match, it just didn’t get into gear. [*¾] 2.5/10
