Beforethe match One Man Gang is in the ring to receive his bye to the semi-finals due to the draw between Jake Roberts and Rick Rude. Greg Valentine is already in the ring with Jimmy Hart for his introduction, but Randy Savage makes his way out with Miss Elizabeth. He beat Butch Reed in the first round, Valentine beat Ricky Steamboat so we don’t get a rematch of the classic the previous year.

GREG VALENTINE VS.
RANDY SAVAGE
(Tournament Quarterfinal)
WWF WrestleMania IV (27th March 1988)
They lock up and Greg Valentine connects with right hands, Savage is sent across the ring into the corner and Valentine connects with more strikes.
Randy Savage answers with an elbow to the top of the head and sends Valentine’s head into the top turnbuckle. Randy Savage sends Valentine across the ring then snapmares him down for a knee drop. Savage tries to end it quickly but Valentine kicks out. referee backs Savage away and Valentine catches him with a forearm shot. Greg Valentine goes to the top rope and hits an ax handle, which Monsoon calls a lot of wasted effort, and it did look strange. Greg Valentine hits an elbow drop, he hits the ropes for the second one and gets a nearfall. A shoulder breaker gets another nearfall as commentary say Valentine didn’t have all of the cover. Randy Savage is sent over the top to the floor and Valentine hits an elbow drop from the apron. Valentine connects with chops and sends Savage into the guardrail. Miss Elizabeth looks worried at ringside as Greg Valentine is back in the ring. Savage makes it on to the apron before Valentine drapes him over the top rope for some more elbows to the chest. Greg Valentine stomps at Savage and goes out to the apron. Greg Valentine drops from the apron with an elbow drop to Savage. Valentine with a few more elbow strikes before blatantly choking Savage.
Greg Valentine makes it back in the ring and drags Savage away from the ropes. Greg Valentine connects with knees to Savage’s hamstring but Randy Savage makes it to the ropes before the Figure Four is applied. Valentine drops on Savage’s leg and brings him back to the middle of the ring for a suplex, which gets him a nearfall. Randy Savage kicks out again after a backbreaker and starts to fight back. He kicks Valentine in the midsection, Greg Valentine’s head meets the turnbuckle and he’s sent off the ropes into a back elbow. Randy Savage does some choking of his own before bringing Valentine back to his feet. It doesn’t last long as Valentine is slammed down to the mat so Randy Savage can climb the ropes. Savage hits the ax handle to Greg Valentine and covers, but Jimmy Hart gets on the apron to distract the referee. Greg Valentine catches Savage with an uppercut and sends him off the ropes into a back elbow. They fight for a suplex and Savage hits it, he goes to the top rope again as Valentine is able to get to his feet. The ax handle is cut off with a shot to the midsection! They both go down and the referee starts to count. Randy Savage is up at 4 as Valentine is talking to Hart, Greg Valentine avoids an attack and Savage hits the ropes hard.
Greg Valentine
brings Savage back into the middle of the ring for the Figure Four, but Randy
Savage counters into a small package for the win.

This was a pretty good match, it went back and forth with
Savage fighting from underneath for most of the match. The only problem with
one-night tournaments is that the stacked card takes time from the earlier matches
like this, but it is a part of the bigger story. [*½] 2.5/10
