REY MYSTERIO Sr. & KONNAN VS. NORMAN SMILEY & CHRIS ADAMS

The Pat O’Connor International Tag Team Memorial Cup continues with Team Mexico against Team UK. Judging from the music Chris Adams and Norman Smiley are out first, The graphic calls him Rey Myseric, but it is Rey Mysterio Sr. Team Mexico are considered the dark horse in the tournament. Konnan is in the white mask, Rey in the black mask.

Jim Ross and Paul E. Dangerously are on commentary for this match.

NORMAN SMILEY & CHRIS ADAMS VS. KONNAN & REY MISTERIO Sr.

(Pat O’Connor Memorial Cup quarterfinal)

WCW Starrcade 1990 (16th December 1990)

Rey Mysterio Sr. starts with Norman Smiley, they lock up and Mysterio with a knee to Smiley’s midsection, Konnan enters the ring for a double top wristlock but Norman Smiley flips out of it and takes them both down with a Japanese arm drag.

The Mexicans run through Smiley with a clothesline. They each hold a leg whilst Norman Smiley is in a headstand. Chris Adams distracts them, jumping through Smiley’s legs and it works enough for Team Great Britain to hit stereo dropkicks sending the Luchadores through the ropes to the elevated walkway. Rey Mysterio connects with a right hand and sends Chris Adams off the ropes, but Adams connects with a kick to the ribs. A Superkick knocks Rey Mysterio out of the ring and the crowd go insane. Konnan and Smiley get the tag, Konnan breaks the knuckle lock and uses the ropes for an arm drag. Konnan leapfrogs Smiley who follows Konnan to the corner, Konnan takes him over with a headscissors but is caught in a Fisherman Suplex by Norman Smiley. The referee can’t get down quick enough to count before Konnan kicks out but Smiley hits European uppercuts. Rey Mysterio dropkicks Smiley into a backslide but Chris Adams breaks the count and tags in. Chris Adams connects with right hands and takes Konnan over into a chinlock.

Konnan works to his feet and tags in Mysterio, but Norman Smiley dropkicks them both before they can double-team his partner. Rey Mysterio charges at Norman Smiley and is sent out to the floor. Chris Adams kicks Konnan into a german suplex from Smiley, but Konnan kicks out. Rey was there to break up the cover, but wasn’t needed. Chris Adams gets the tag and hits Konnan wih a right hand from the top rope and tagging back out, Norman Smiley takes Konnan down with a headlock but it’s countered into a headscissors. Norman Smiley rolls out of it into a cover but Konnan kicks out immediately. Another tag by Great Britain, Adams sends Konnan off the ropes into a clothesline that just scraped him. He puts Konnan in a headlock and makes the tag as he’s sent off the ropes. Rey is in also and Adams runs into a double back elbow. I think Smiley was slammed but we have a terrible angle over commentary’s shoulder to see Chris Adams’ selling taking up most of the screen.

Konnan sets Norman Smiley on the top rope and hits an inverted suplex, he rolls Norman Smiley up and covers for the win.

WINNERS: KONNAN & REY MYSTERIO Sr.

This match was pretty rough, it didn’t have enough time to tell a story and everything looked clunky. A few moves got a reaction but this didn’t click. [*] 1.5/10
