It makes sense that on the 25th Anniversary of this monumental match (in hindsight) I would review it. So here we are. This was the (official) WCW debut of Bill Goldberg, who had been training at the WCW Power Plant since the previous year. Hugh Morrus makes his way out as Schiovane says they’re in a brand new venue which opened the previous Friday, it will also be holding the 2002 Olympic hockey. Bill Goldberg is already in the ring waiting.
Mike Tenay, Mark Madden and Tony Schiavone are on commentary for this match.
HUGH MORRUS VS. GOLDBERG
WCW Nitro (22nd September 1997)
The bell rings, Hugh Morrus looks at the
crowd for support until they lock up, Goldberg is able to push Morrus
back into the corner and connects with forearms.
Hugh Morrus puts Goldberg in a top wristlock but it’s countered into a
hammerlock by the newcomer. Goldberg looks to reverse into one of his own but settles
for an arm wringer, until he accidentally lets go of Morrus’ arm. Back to it
and Goldberg rolls through into a legbar, but Morrus reaches the bottom rope.
Hugh Morrus is sent into the corner, but he lands on the middle turnbuckle and
catches Goldberg with a clothesline, looked like Goldberg was too close there.
Morrus struggles getting Goldberg into position for the moonsault, but hits it
anyway. Goldberg is able to kick out at 2. Commentary act shocked as Goldberg
reverses an irish whip, sending Morrus into the corner.
Goldberg runs into a back elbow but pops straight up and backflips before catching Morrus in a powerslam. Goldberg hits a scoop slam and the Jackhammer for the win.
WINNER: HUGH MORRUS
This was a short, basic match. It’s all it should have been for Goldberg to get some time in front of the crowd and he looked strong in his debut kicking out of the No Laughing Matter moonsault. Not a must-watch for the in-ring work, but historically this would be an important match for WCW in its’ final few years and seeing some of the things Goldberg would take out of his character is a cool novelty. [*¼] 2.5/10
