DIAMOND STUDD VS. RON SIMMONS

Before the match, Paul E. Dangerously is in the ring with Cactus Jack. Paul E. asks who is behind the attacks on Sting. Cactus Jack says they should applaud Sting’s career now, because it’s over. He claims Abdullah the Butcher is his business partner, he’s in a box on the stage and needs a Cactus jack hug. Cactus Jack goes over to the box and Sting pops out, throwing right hands. He stomps on Cactus Jack and sends him off the ropes on the outside into a backdrop on the walkway. Cactus Jack is sent down to the concrete with a hip toss but stands up as JR puts over the resiliency. Sting grabs Cactus by the hair, bringing him over to the steps and back up to the raised walkway for a standing dropkick. Cactus Jack decides to try and make it backstage, Sting follows him, but on the walkway and is hit with a trash can. Cactus Jack drags Sting to even ground by the ankle and tries to put the trash can over Sting’s head as referees come out to try and break it up. Sting gets a few shots with the trash can to Cactus Jack’s head over the referees as we go to a commercial break.

As we get back the video and audio quality have suddenly dropped. JR and Schiavone talk about Ron Simmons’ football jersey being retired the previous year, and we have footage of the ceremony before Bobby Bowden has some comments on a video message from his office.

The Diamond Studd makes his way out first, a pre-fame Scott Hall, to those who don’t know. Jim Ross says the Studd is also ranked #8 in the world. Ron Simmons is going into this match with a contract signing later tonight on his mind but looks focused as he makes his way out.

Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone are on commentary for this match.

DIAMOND STUDD VS. RON SIMMONS

WCW Clash of the Champions XVI: Fall Brawl (5th September 1991)

The Diamond Studd attacks Ron Simmons from behind to jump-start the match. He attacks with right hands and clubbing blows, but Simmons makes some ground with kicks as he steadies himself using the top rope.

Ron Simmons connects with right hands, but Diamond Studd cuts him off, poking Simmons in the eye. Ron Simmons reverses the irish whip, he goes prone but is caught with a kneeling chokeslam. Diamond Studd hesitates before covering and only gets a 2 count, he hits more right hands in the corner but is sent into the turnbuckles, Studd gets his boot up and hits a bulldog from the middle rope on Simmons and takes some time, barely covering Simmons, who reverses into a pin of his own, easily. Diamond Studd kicks out. More right hands from Hall and he’s sent into the corner again, Simmons charges and this time he slides out of the ring. Diamond Studd gets tripped from the floor and split in half on the ring post. Ron Simmons hits an inverted atomic drop, then the standard variation before running through Studd with a clothesline.

Ron Simmons sends Diamond Studd off the ropes and hits the standing Spinebuster. He takes a Three Point Stance and the running shoulder tackle gets Simmons the win.

WINNER: RON SIMMONS

The match was more competitive than I thought it would be going in to it. The future Razor Ramon looked good against Simmons, who was on his way to being a real star of the company during what was supposed to be an exhibition match for the Florida Football legend. [*½] 3/10
