Before the match Jeremy Borash is backstage with Jeff Jarrett, talking about tonight’s King of the Mountain main event. He says he’s always doubted and he always proves them wrong and compares himself to Michael Jordan and Reggie Jackson before putting over TNA for lasting 4 years. Larry Zbyszko shows up and tells him the new face of TNA Management is who Jarrett thought it was and Jarrett’s pissed off he finds out 2 hours before his match.
Bobby Roode and Rhino
faced off at the previous month’s Sacrifice Pay Per View, and Roode cost Rhino
a King of the Mountain qualifier against Abyss on Impact, so Rhino asked for a
handicap match against Roode and Scott D’Amore. Mike Tenay and Don West are on
commentary for this match. Roode and Coach D’Amore enter first, so Tenay and
West can make jokes about D’Amore’s weight and the lack of preparation for the
match. D’Amore grabs the microphone and claims Rhino is scared of losing to him
one on one, which is why he asked for this match instead and tells Bobby Roode to
just watch the match. He’s interrupted by Rhino’s music and bails as Rhino runs
to the ring.
RHINO VS. TEAM
CANADA
(Handicap match)
Slammiversary 2006 (June 2006)
Rhino fires off right hands at Roode and sends him off the ropes into a backdrop. Roode bails to the floor and confers with D’Amore, who says he wasn’t ready. They stall on the floor for a bit then Roode takes his place on the apron, Scott D’Amore slowly gets back into the ring, immediately tagging in Roode. Rhino runs at D’Amore but Bobby Roode cuts him off with a kick to the midsection, Rhino is put in a headlock, he sends Roode off the ropes but Roode slides between his legs. Rhino knocks him down with a shoulder tackle, Roode stays prone and then leapfrogs Rhino as he runs the ropes before being sent into the corner. Roode tries to float over but Rhino waits and runs through Roode with clotheslines Roode is sent into the corner near D’Amore trying to force an accidental tag.
D’Amore gives Roode advice from the apron and slaps him on the back, counting as a tag and commentary ignore it to talk about Team Canada’s tactics. Rhino brings D’Amore in the hardway but gives him a chance to go to the floor, D’Amore jogs around ringside and Rhino gives chase until he’s cut off with a clothesline by Roode. Roode goes back to his corner as the referee turns around, D’Amore starts distracting him again so Bobby Roode can get a cheap shot in before sending Rhino back in the ring. Scott D’Amore covers Rhino but only gets 2. He connects with stomps and celebrates with starjumps until Rhino turns him around, but Bobby Roode is back in the ring. He hits a stunner on Rhino and D’Amore covers again for another nearfall. D’Amore does press ups and taunts Rhino before tagging back out. Bobby Roode chokes Rhino across the middle rope as I already hate this match. He almost sends Rhino into the top turnbuckle and softens him up with a right hand and a chop before sending Rhino across the ring. Roode covers and Rhino kicks out at 2 again.
Roode brings Rhino over to D’Amore’s corner in a front facelock and tags out. Scott D’Amore gets a shot at Rhino’s ribs and a falling chop. Rhino gets to his feet through right hands, grabbing D’Amore by the throat. D’Amore breaks Rhino’s grip and hits a jawbreaker then celebrates again. Rhino kicks D’Amore in the gut but Roode cuts off the Rhinodriver attempt. Scott D’Amore hits a knee drop and covers for 2 before tagging out. Roode hits a suplex for 2 and chokes Rhino on the mat before hitting him across the back of the head. Rhino absorbs shots as the fans get behind him, he gets a shot in but is sent to the mat, Roode hits a double sledge and covers for another nearfall. Scott D’Amore tags in,he hits a fist drop from the middle rope, then a standing leg drop, the referee starts to count but D’Amore rolls back and hits another pair of fist drops before tagging in Roode, who comes in with boots and a neck crank on Rhino. Rhino fights to his feet, Roode reverses an irish whip but is caught with a belly to belly suplex by Rhino. Bobby Roode gets to his feet in the corner, Rhino charges into his boots and Roode ducks a clothesline to hit the neckbreaker. Bobby Roode covers for another nearfall and follows up with mounted punches before tagging back out. Scott D’Amore takes too long to get to the top rope for a moonsault and eats shit. Roode is on the top rope across the ring but Rhino cuts him off with a right hand as D’Amore bails on his partner. Rhino knocks Roode down with right hands, the irish whip is reversed but Roode is knocked down with a shoulder tackle and a back elbow. Roode is sent ino the corner and Rhino runs at him with a shoulder thrust.
Scott D’Amore hits Rhino with the hockey stick behind the referee’s back and goes for the D’Amoraliser but can’t pick Rhino up. Rhino hits a spinebuster on D’Amore. Bobby Roode is back in the ring but he gets sent out over the top rope. Rhino hits the Gore on Scott D’Amore and covers for the 3.
The match did pick up near the end, but the constant
stalling throughout started to take from the match. There was no need for it to
go 10 minutes, especially for a Pay Per View. D’Amore should have also gotten
more comeuppance near the end, but that’s a nitpick. It gets the point for D’Amore’s
moonsault and Roode and Rhino carrying it. [DUD] 1/10
