SAMOA JOE VS. SONJAY DUTT

Mike Tenay & Don West are on commentary for this match, which is Joe’s TNA debut. Sonjay Dutt makes his way out first. During  Samoa Joe’s entrance Tenay puts over his Ring of Honor run and mentions Joe has only lost 1 match in the last 3 years, the night his 22 month Ring of Honor Championship reign came to an end.

They circle at the bell and Samoa Joe starts with leg kicks as a weak “Joe’s gonna kill you” chant starts. Sonjay Dutt is cut down from the damage to the hamstring, he tries to use his speed but Joe throws him into the corner. A knee to the gut from Joe and he slaps Dutt around. Sonjay Dutt ducks under a discus clothesline and chops at Joe, Sonjay Dutt’s hamstring kicks don’t have the same effect as Joe’s did and he’s shoved across the ring. Joe is knocked back into the corner by a quick dropkick from Dutt. Sonjay Dutt’s running shoulder block predictably does nothing but he knocks Samoa Joe back with a nice springboard kick. Sonjay Dutt can’t believe he knocked Joe back again but takes too long and runs into the STO in the corner. The replay shows that Dutt landed on the back of his neck. As we get back to live-action, Samoa Joe snapmares Sonjay over, a chop to the back and kick to Dutt’s chest knock him down, Samoa Joe hits a knee drop as Tenay reminds us he’s 280lbs. He covers but Sonjay Dutt kicks out.

Samoa Joe sends Sonjay Dutt into the corner, charging at him with a running knee, Dutt slumps back into the corner and Joe sees an opportunity for the face wash with his boot, including the running boot for an exclamation point. Joe starts taking his time, Dutt tries to fight to his feet with right hands but is knocked back. Samoa Joe brings Dutt to his feet, who gets in more shots, he kicks at Joe’s leg and decides to run the ropes, right into a calf kick, tripping Dutt using his own momentum. Joe hits a running back senton and covers but Sonjay Dutt kicks out at 2 again. Samoa Joe connects with a couple of hard chops in the corner and sends Dutt across the ring, Sonjay Dutt holds on to the top rope, Joe runs at him and Dutt sidesteps, Joe recovers, climbing out of the ring and is knocked off the apron with a springboard kick from Dutt. Sonjay Dutt gets a running start on a somersault senton over the top rope to the floor! Samoa Joe rolls back in the ring first, Dutt springboards into Joe’s arms, but slips out the back and kicks at Joe’s leg. Sonjay Dutt hits a springboard dropkick and covers Joe for a nearfall.

Sonjay Dutt hits Joe with a back elbow and an enziguri as they get to their feet. He hits a 450 splash from the top rope for another nearfall, back to the top rope, and Samoa Joe rolls out of the way but Dutt is able to land on his feet and rolls through his attempted move, he runs into a snap powerslam from Samoa Joe who covers but only gets a 2 count. Samoa Joe brings Sonjay Dutt to the corner, he jabs and chops Dutt before seating him on the top turnbuckle. Joe softens him up with forearm shots but Dutt avoids the haymaker and knocks Joe back. Samoa Joe hits Sonjay Dutt with an enziguri and hits the Muscle Buster out of the corner, he puts Dutt in the Coquina clutch and he taps out.

WINNER: SAMOA JOE

This was a great debut for Samoa Joe, he looked really strong against a popular TNA regular, and Sonjay Dutt was able to get more in the match than I remembered from the last time I watched it. Samoa Joe’s first year in TNA was amazing, with this match kickstarting it nicely and Mike Tenay’s synopsis of Samoa Joe’s indy career was refreshing too. ** ¾  and I’d rate it 6/10.
