Both men are in the ring for the introductions, Tommy Dreamer grabs Anderson's wrist and the ring announcer rushes through Dreamer's introduction as he scrambles to safety. Joey Styles and Cyrus the Virus are on commentary for this match.
CW ANDERSON VS. TOMMY DREAMER (“I Quit” match)
ECW Guilty as Charged 2001 (7th January 2001)
They lock up and work around the ring, ending up under the bottom rope and out to the floor. CW Anderson hits Dreamer with a right hand against the guard rail, he follows with chops but Dreamer fires back, Anderson reverses an irish whip sending Dreamer into the guard rail. CW Anderson barely connects with right hands and chops but Dreamer suplexes him at ringside. He sends Anderson back into the ring and gets cut off as he gets to the apron. CW Anderson fires away with right hands but Dreamer snaps his arm over the top rope, he slingshots into the ring onto Anderson and puts him in a Dragon sleeper, the referee is there with the microphone so we don't miss it but CW Anderson doesn't quit yet, Dreamer tries to send Anderson's shoulder into the ring post, Anderson counters, sending Dreamer the same way. He hits a shoulder stunner and puts Dreamer in an armbar but he doesn't quit. Styles says Dreamer was biting Anderson's kneepad to stop himself and it's small details like that I miss hearing. I also agree with Cyrus when he says Anderson should have focused on Dreamer's injured back from the start.
Tommy Dreamer sends Anderson off the ropes and hits him with a sitout spinebuster, then rolls him over into a single leg boston crab. Anderson gets to the ropes and for reasons I'll never understand Dreamer has to break the hold. He wedges a chair in the corner, he snaps Anderson's left arm over the guardrail before putting it between the chair and the ring post. Tommy grabs another chair and hits the first chair with it into Anderson's arm. He goes to find a wrench and hits Anderson over the head with it, then gets the ring bell, hitting it with the wrench against Anderson's ears as we see he's busted open. Tommy Dreamer drives the wrench into Anderson's forehead but celebrates early so Anderson hits him low and sends him from the apron into the guardrail. He brings both the match and a chair into the ring and sets it up. Tommy Dreamer is sent off the ropes into a drop toehold onto the top of the standing chair, meaning both guys get colour tonight. Anderson pokes Dreamer in the eye to stop a back suplex and drops Dreamer's knee on to the chair, kicking Dreamer's leg from under him.
CW Anderson hits a leg drop across Dreamer's knee and puts him in an Indian deathlock, Anderson punches at Dreamer whilst he has the hold on but Dreamer starts fighting back with right hands of his own, he frees his leg but CW Anderson hits the knee with a chair. Dreamer takes a chair shot across the spine, then 2 to the cranium, but he's still on his feet. “Dammit!” - Joey Styles. CW Anderson runs at Dreamer with the chair but Tommy gets his boot up, knocking it back into Anderson's face. He hits an elbow drop from the middle rope. Tommy Dreamer gets a late Christmas gift from one of the staff at ringside, he opens it to find razor wire! Anderson cuts him off with a right hand, then turns his attention to Towel Boy, bringing him up to the apron. Towel Boy hits Anderson with another Christmas gift, stunning him. Tommy Dreamer puts Anderson in the full nelson on the mat, Towel Boy gets in the ring too early, the ref asks if Anderson quits and he swats him away.
Towel Boy brings the gift back into the ring and hands it to Dreamer, it's a pair of cookie sheets, they take one each and sandwich Anderson's head with shots to the head. Towel Boy gets on the top rope as Dreamer holds Anderson, CW Anderson hits a T-Bone suplex on Dreamer and hits a delayed superplex on Towel Boy! Dreamer catches a superkick and puts a keylock on the ankle, but releases before Anderson reaches the ropes. Dreamer sends CW Anderson into the corner but runs into a back elbow. Anderson hits a spinebuster on the razor wire, it sticks to Dreamer's shirt as he's put in an armbar, Dreamer makes it to the bottom rope and Anderson releases, going to get a chair from ringside. The referee takes the razor wire off Dreamer's shirt as Anderson positions the chair standing and facing the chair from earlier, he hits a suplex on Dreamer onto the chairs. Anderson places one of the chairs in a corner as Dreamer uses the other to try and get to his feet, Anderson places Dreamer's head through the gap and sends him into the corner, sending the chair into his throat. CW Anderson brings a table into the ring and starts climbing the turnbuckles, Dreamer hits him with a chair and climbs to the middle rope, SPICOLLI DRIVER THROUGH THE TABLE! He wraps the cable from the table around Anderson's eyes and pulls back in a crossface, forcing Anderson to finally quit.
WINNER: TOMMY DREAMER
I remember that I loved this match when I first saw it. My opinion on it has dulled since then but it's still a really good match. From the intense start and unintentional comedy of the ring announcer fleeing whilst doing his job and the way the match built to the climax, the razor wire seemed to be a red herring as there was only a spinebuster and it didn't look intentional for his landing..– As a match it's ** but personally, I'd rate it 5.5/10
