Tuesdays will be a mix to keep things fresh, this week
I'll look at a tournament match, so it made sense to look at a King
of the Ring match. I decided to begin some television qualifiers and
early rounds, with not many King of the Ring pay-per-views showing
the quarterfinals. Also I'm sticking to the original 1993-2002 run
for now.
This is the second King of the Ring qualifier on this
show. Michael Cole and Tazz are on commentary, discussing KurtAngle's Street Fight with Shane McMahon which is also at King of the
Ring. It's almost an alien concept to me now, having pay-per-view
matches hyped before the event. Christian accompanies Edge to
ringside
TEST
VS. EDGE (King of the Ring qualifier.
WWF
Smackdown VI (7th June 2001)
Test kicks Edge in the gut
before they lock up and sends him to the mat. He grabs Edge by the
throat, launching him into the corner and hammers him with rights,
then lays in the boots before the referee brings him away. Edge is
sent across the ring with a hip toss out of the corner. Edge gets to
his feet in the opposite corner and is squashed with a clothesline
then gets sent over the top to the floor with another one. Test
follows to the floor, backs Christian away and chases Edge around
ringside. Christian blindsides Test with a clothesline as Edge slides
in the ring. Edge goes back to the floor and drops Test's knee on the
barricade and goes after it with stomps. Edge breaks the count before
taking it back into the ring, clipping Test with a chop block and
working the knee on the mat. Edge twists Test's knee around the rope
in the corner before the referee backs him off. Edge snapmares Test
out of the corner, but Test kicks him off into the corner and rolls
him up for 1.
Edge goes back to the knee
with a chop block and a cannonball on Test's knee using the bottom
rope as a springboard, covering for 1. An elbow drop to the knee and
leglock follow on the mat, then Test is dragged to the corner. Edge
tries to set up a ring post figure four but Test shoves him into the
barricade. Edge gets back in the ring but is cut off with a right
hand, they exchange until Edge ducks a shot and kicks at Test's knee
again. Edge runs into a tilt-a-whirl sitout slam. Test knocks Edge
down with a clothesline, but Edge ducks the second and kicks at
Test's knee, Test blocks a clothesline turning it into a full nelson
slam, planting Test and bringing Christian up to the apron. Test goes
over to have a word and runs into a Spear from Edge, I miss when he
did it without the set-up some times. Edge slowly covers but only
gets a nearfall. Edge gets sent into the ropes, he ducks the big
boot, getting kicked in the gut the second time around. Test hits a
Pumphandle slam and covers, but Christian puts Edge's foot on the
bottom rope. Test brings Christian up to the apron and into the ring
by his hair, hitting him with the Big Boot. Edge hits the Edgucution
on Test to win the match.
WINNER: EDGE
This was a good match. Edge had a clear game plan,
with Christian by his side as the insurance policy. Christian took
one for the team to let Edge get back into the match but didn't
interfere to take away from it. They would do better at Survivor
Series, but this was serviceable for what it was. Two guys looking to
climb the ranks on the bloated roster.– [**] match but personally
3.5/10
