Well, here we go. Today marks the birthday of Akebono, he has wrestled, Sumo and had an MMA career over in Japan. Big Show had no plans for Wrestlemania, so here we are. This is the first and only (at the
time of writing) Sumo rules match in Wrestlemania history. The ring
is set up with a circle drawn in the middle. The object is to knock
your opponent off their feet or out of the circle. Michael Cole and
Tazz have commentary duties for this match. Akebono has a long and
illustrious Sumo career, being the only American born Grand Sumo
champion in history and totaling over 600 wins in Sumo. He's the
only person to outweigh Big Show in WWE. Big Show teases taking off
his gown on the ramp but doesn't. There is a preparation ceremony,
purifying the ring with salt and they take their stance.
AKEBONO
VS. BIG SHOW (Sumo Match)
WWE
Wrestlemania 21 (3rd April 2005)
They run into each other, slapping at chests as they
move closer to the edge. They grapple, holding the Hiratchi belts for
leverage, teetering near the edge of the circle, Michael Cole
clarifies that only one foot has to leave the circle. Big Show shoves
Akebono across the ring but is forced back on a shoulder tackle. They
collide again, Big Show is able to move Akebono to the edge of the
circle but a hip throw sends Big Show to the mat and he rolls down to
the arena floor.
WINNER: AKEBONO
Except the ceremony at the beginning to give you an
understanding of the tradition, there wasn't much to look forward to
in this match. If I never see two guys that size in that little of
clothing again it will be too soon. UNRATABLE
After the match the two embrace and Big Show lifts
Akebono's hand in victory.
