LA PARKA VS. DISCO INFERNO

Tony Schiovane, Mike Tenay and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan are on commentary tonight. La Parka is a star from the AAA promotion in Mexico, WCW had a good working relationship with them at this time meaning they could trade talent. I'm watching this match out of curiosity but on paper, it seems a waste of a flight. Disco Inferno dances out to the ring, the fans and cameraman dance with him. La Parka is the `Chairman' of WCW and threatens Disco Inferno before the match

LA PARKA VS. DISCO INFERNO
WCW Superbrawl 8 (22nd February 1998)

Sick of waiting La Parka throws the chair at Disco in the corner. Disco Inferno grabs the chair but doesn't get a chance to use it, forgetting to take it with him as he avoids a charge. Disco Inferno kicks La Parka in the gut but is sent across the ring. Disco Inferno tries to meet La Parka head-on but drops to his ass when they collide. Disco Inferno is sent across the ring and runs into a powerslam, La Parka mocks Disco Inferno's dancing as Heenan, who said neither man could dance, cheers him on. La Parka kicks Disco Inferno in the gut and goes back to dancing. La Parka gets a waistlock as Inferno is on his feet but Inferno gets to the rope and elbows La Parka away. La Parka runs into a powerslam, giving Disco Inferno a nearfall. La Parka gets sent into the corner, Disco Inferno follows with a clothesline before doing the same in the opposite corner. La Parka drops to the mat and Disco Inferno covers for another nearfall. La Parka reverses an irish whip, dragging Disco Inferno into a short-arm clothesline. La Parka panders to the crowd and knocks Disco Inferno out of the ring with a spinning heel kick, shortly following with a running corkscrew plancha over the top rope!

Mike Tenay gets his moment to shine on commentary with that move and La Parka helps him celebrate by strutting in the ring. La Parka doesn't want a count out though, going back outside and chopping Disco's chest. Disco Inferno reverses an irish whip but La Parka counters back sending Disco Inferno into the guardrail, Inferno staggers into a clothesline before La Parka shows some more dance moves in the ring. It doesn't take him long to get bored of that, going back to ringside and dropping Disco Inferno's sternum on the guardrail. La Parka rolls Disco Inferno back into the ring and covers for a nearfall. La Parka slams Disco Inferno but eats shit on a splash from the top rope. Disco Inferno takes it to ringside. Disco Inferno sends La Parka into the guardrail and clotheslines him down. Mike Tenay says Disco's plan is to take it to the floor when all he's really doing is going tit-for-tat. Adding to my case he drops La Parka's sternum over the guardrail and gets back in the ring. Tony Schiovane says he is showboating but we watch La Parka get to his feet instead. La Parka drops Disco's jaw over the top rope before getting in the ring and kicking him swiftly in the ribs. A second kick follows, this time to the head and La Parka covers, but Disco Inferno gets the rope break.
La Parka taunts again and traps Disco Inferno in a chinlock, trying to use Disco's hair as he gets to his feet. Disco Inferno elbows his way free but runs into a drop toehold. La Parka gets a nearfall from a La Magistral cradle as commentary (mainly Tenay) talk about Mexican wrestling in different areas of America such as Texas and California. Disco Inferno is sent hard into the corner, he stumbles out favoring his back. La Parka tries again and this time Inferno stays there. La Parka hits Disco Inferno with a running dropkick and covers with his shin over Disco Inferno's throat but still only gets 2. La Parka keeps Disco Inferno on the mat with another chinlock but gets frustrated and gouges Disco's eyes. Disco Inferno counters an irish whip but it's countered again sending him into the corner. Disco Inferno avoids a running dropkick and knocking La Parka down with a running elbow. Disco Inferno quickly covers but only gets 2. La Parka is sent into the ropes but Disco Inferno ducks too early, getting kicked, slapped and kicked again.

Disco Inferno is given time to recover because La Parka's a showman, getting a shot in a from his knees. Disco Inferno is able to keep La Parka away whilst he gets to his feet using the ropes. La Parka is sent over to the apron. La Parka slingshots over the top rope, taking La Parka over to ringside with a bodyscissors. Disco Inferno hurts his knee as he hits the floor. La Parka follows Disco Inferno with a tope suicida through the ropes. La Parka takes it back into the ring for another nearfall. Disco Inferno is sent from corner to corner but he gets his boot up. La Parka runs into the boot a second time and he sends La Parka's shoulder into the ringpost. Disco Inferno boots at La Parka in the corner before sending him into the ropes. La Parka runs into an inverted atomic drop. Disco Inferno hits a jumping clothesline for a nearfall. La Parka reverses an irish whip but ducks early and gets caught with a swinging neckbreaker. Disco Inferno covers for a close nearfall. Disco Inferno attacks La Parka with kicks and punches to the midsection in the corner before the referee pulls him away.

La Parka rushes Disco Inferno from behind and the referee gets blinded by a wild waving thumb to the eye. La Parka grabs the chair from ringside. La Parka sits Disco Inferno on the chair and climbs to the top rope. Disco Inferno crotches La Parka on the top turnbuckle but his superplex attempt is blocked. Disco Inferno is knocked back down to the floor as La Parka stands back on the top rope. They exchange blows and Disco Inferno brings La Parka back into the ring and he hits the chair. Disco Inferno hits the Chartbuster for the win.

WINNER: DISCO INFERNO

I didn't go in expecting too much from this match and I was pleasantly surprised. I can give or take La Parka as a wrestler although admittedly I've seen a limited selection of his work. Disco Inferno had a role to play in WCW and he played it well. He looked good in this match, using La Parka's underestimation of him to his advantage and the chair coming into play didn't seem too forced. Disco Inferno got a good victory here, I'm still on the fence about La Parka. – WORKRATE: 3.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 3/5 OVERALL 6.5/10
