Before the match Terri Runnels shows Jerry Lawler how a ladder match works backstage, taped earlier, he takes the chance to peek up her skirt. Jerry “The King” Lawler and Jim Ross are on commentary for this match. Edge & Christian make their way through the crowd. The Terri Invitational was a best of five series between the two teams, but that wouldn't give us the acronym. The Hardy Boyz enter, now known as “The Brood” thanks to their association with Gangrel. Gangrel's blood spitting entrance will always be great.
THE HARDY BOYZ VS. EDGE & CHRISTIAN (Terri Invitational Tournament Ladder match)
WWF No Mercy 1999 (17th October 1999)
The two teams face off under the $100,000 prize money. The Hardyz start with a shove but get backed into the ropes with right hands. Both Hardys are sent across the ring but Matt was a step behind and he got caught in the rope before bouncing back. Christian hits the backdrop leaving Edge to take Matt over with a hip toss. Edge & Christian go to get the ladder early but The Hardyz attack them on the entranceway. Edge & Christian brawl with the Hardyz back to the ring and they're set up in opposite corners. Edge is sent into Matt Hardy, hitting a spear then sends Christian into Jeff Hardy with a clothesline. Matt Hardy cuts Edge and Christian off as they move towards the ladders again. Jeff joins and they send E&C into the ring. The Hardyz stomp their opponents and send Edge across the ring. Edge runs into a back elbow and The Hardyz hit a double team on the mat. Matt Hardy instructs Gangrel to get them a ladder, but Tim White chases Gangrel and ejects him from the match.
Edge sends Jeff Hardy over the top rope as they get distracted by Gangrel being asked to leave then turns around into a clothesline getting sent to the floor. Matt Hardy counters an Impaler but Edge hits Jeff Hardy with a dropkick from the apron as Jeff was holding a ladder. Edge starts dragging the ladder towards the ring but Matt knocks him down with a flying clothesline from the apron. Christian picks up speed in the ring and flattens Hardy with his springboard plancha over the top rope. Christian brings the ladder into the ring and starts to climb, but Jeff Hardy pulls him down. Edge is able to stop Jeff from climbing the ladder and makes his way up. Matt Hardy walks to the other side of the ladder and tips it onto Edge. Matt Hardy collapses the ladder but Christian gets his hands on it. Christian swings the ladder at Matt's ribs and uses it to sandwich Jeff in the corner. Christian runs up the ladder and hits a dropkick to Jeff! Edge leans the ladder against the turnbuckles and Matt Hardy is sent across the ring into it. Edge and Christian attempt a modified Poetry in Motion but Matt moves at the last second sending Edge into the ladder!
Jeff Hardy attacks Edge and Christian before setting the ladder back up. Christian follows Jeff up the ladder, bringing him down to the mat with an inverted DDT. Christian starts to climb but Matt Hardy is close behind, bringing him down with a back suplex. Matt Hardy's climb is interrupted by an Edge powerbomb and Edge repostions the ladder under the prize. Edge climbs the ladder but Jeff has made it to the top rope. He knocks Edge from the ladder with a missile dropkick. Matt Hardy slams Edge on the ladder and Jeff hits a Swanton Bomb. Edge rolls out of the ring leaving Christian alone in the corner. Christian is sent into the ladder in the corner and The Hardy Boyz show us Poetry in Motion. The Hardy Boyz run through Christian with the ladder and Matt sets it up in the corner. Jeff Hardy slams Christian, setting him in place as Jeff gets to the top rope, leapfrogging the ladder to hit a legdrop on Christian! Jeff Hardy holds the ladder over Christian as Matt hits a moonsault. Edge is back in the ring, bringing another ladder. He sends it into Matt Hardy, backing him into the corner and throwing it carelessly at Jeff.
Edge leans the ladder against Matt Hardy in the corner and sends Jeff into it with a catapult, but we miss it due to replays. Edge climbs towards the money bag but Matt throws the ladder at Edge, knocking him to the mat. The Hardy Boyz grab the ladder but Edge ducks the charge, Christian dives onto the bridged ladder with a cross body from the top rope! Christian stomps at Matt Hardy in the corner and helps Edge send the ladder into Matt's balls. Edge and Christian dropkick a leg each to drive home the message before turning their attention to Jeff. They repeatedly close the ladder onto Jeff Hardy. Matt Hardy is flapjacked into the ladder in the corner and rolls out of the ring. Jeff Hardy begins to stir as Edge and Christian set both ladders up in the middle of the ring. Jeff Hardy hits the Twist of Fate on Christian and climbs up to meet Edge. Edge brings Jeff down to the mat with a reverse STO from halfway up the ladder. Edge slowly tries to make it back up but Matt cuts him off, hitting a neckbreaker from the ladder. Jeff Hardy and Christian slowly get to the top of the ladder and Christian brings them down with a hip toss.
Edge takes one of the ladders down, ramming it into Matt's head and knocking him out of the ring. Christian has Jeff Hardy set up for a superplex as Edge arranges the ladders on the mat. Edge tries to get under Christian to add more impact to the move but Matt Hardy blindsides him. Matt Hardy goes over to Christian and they exchange right hands over a ladder that Jeff seesaws into their faces, breaking his ass. Edge hit a spear to Jeff Hardy, leaving everyone down on the mat. They slowly scramble for ladders, getting them both set up under the moneybag again and all climb to the top. It's a dead heat so both teams try to knock each other to the mat, causing both ladders to fall. Matt Hardy takes the sickest bump, hitting the top rope and going over to the floor but I can't imagine a great landing for anyone there. When we return from the replays the ladders are unbelievably being set up again. Edge is close to reaching the money but Matt cuts him off with a shot to the midsection. Matt Hardy hammers away with right hands from the top of the ladder but Edge fights back, bouncing Matt's head off the top of the ladder. Matt Hardy falls to the canvas, landing on his feet. He bounces off the ropes, knocking into Christian and Jeff's ladder, Jeff Hardy steps onto the other ladder and knocks Edge down to the mat. Jeff makes time to count the money and slide a $50 in his pocket first before bringing the bag down.
WINNERS: THE HARDY BOYZ
I can't think of a single thing in this match that wouldn't hurt. Jeff is known as the more high-risk Hardy, but Matt really took his share of falls in the match. It annoys me looking back seeing Edge's spear being used as just another move but it happened with Jeff's Twist of Fate too tonight. The finish was good even if the build-up to it in the last couple of minutes was textbook, this match is fondly remembered by many and it's easy to see why. The match was exciting to see and everyone walking away unharmed (in the immediate sense) was a huge relief. As a match, it's *** and personally I'd rate it 8.10
