The winner of this match faces Bam Bam Bigelow in the finals after he received a bye. Mean Gene is in the back with both participants, he questions Bret about why he wanted to face Perfect instead of Mr Hughes. Perfect feels slighted as Gene's stirred it up. He mentions they're both second generation wrestlers turning it into “my dad can beat your dad” Perfect says he owes Bret and he'll deliver tonight. Bret Hart enters the match first, he beat Razor Ramon in the quarterfinals (which I reviewed here). This semi-final match has a 30-minute time limit, the commentary team consists of Bobby Heenan, Randy “Macho Man” Savage and Jim Ross. Mr Perfect enters the ring and throws his towel to the referee, who holds it for a second like he doesn't know what to do.
MR PERFECT VS. BRET HART (King of the Ring Semi-Finals)
WWF King of the Ring (13th June 1993)
The bell rings and commentary notices Bret's hand taped up where Ramon stomped him. Perfect gets a waistlock so Bret uses the ropes to escape. Ross mentions the difference between these guys' style and their fathers' rough, brawling style when they wrestled. Bret Hart keeps Perfect in a headlock until Perfect sends him across the ring. Bret sends Perfect down with a shoulder tackle, Bret blocks a hip toss into one of his own and takes Perfect down with a headlock. Perfect escapes with a leg scissors but Bret rolls to escape, sliding his head free and diving for a headlock on the mat. JR and Heenan talk about Brain's time managing Perfect as he and Bret get to their feet. Perfect forces a break in the corner and chops Bret. Bret Hart reverses an irish whip sending Perfect into the corner, Perfect staggers out into a scoop slam but kicks Hart away. Perfect struggles for a slam on Bret who kicks Perfect away. Bret Hart goes back to a headlock on the mat. The commentary talks about Bam Bam Bigelow getting a rest as Hitman keeps Perfect on the mat for a while, Perfect tries to pull back on Hart's neck but can't break the hold. Perfect goes back to his front and gets to his feet still in the headlock. Perfect hits a couple of forearm shots and sends Bret Hart into the ropes but Bret comes back with a crucifix roll up for 2.
Bret Hart goes back to the headlock takedown but Perfect gets to his feet. More forearms and a pull of the tights send Bret into the ropes again, this time he takes Perfect down with a crossbody, but Perfect kicks out at 2 sending Bret out of the ring. Bret Hart rams his shoulder into Perfect and gets back in the ring with a sunset flip for a nearfall. Bret Hart goes back to the headlock. Mr Perfect uses Bret's hair to pull him down, getting back to his feet. Perfect uses the hair again to back Hart into the ropes and he drives his knee into Hitman's ribs. Perfect stomps on Bret's midsection and kicks him in the ribs. Mr Perfect holds Bret in place for a standing dropkick sending him out of the ring. Mr Perfect lets Bret back in the ring but kicks his hand as he gets in. Mr Perfect sends Bret's face into the turnbuckle then attacks in the corner. Mr Perfect gets a nearfall from a knee lift and a kick to the ribs sends Bret outside. Mr Perfect attacks Bret on the floor, then leaves him for the count. Bret gets back on the apron but Perfect sends him into the guardrail!
Mr Perfect interrupts the count out for some reason as Bret's started grabbing his knee from the landing. Bret does eventually get back in the ring and Perfect gets another nearfall from a knee lift. Bret fights back from his knees with a right hand but Perfect drops him and climbs to the top rope, hitting a missile dropkick. Perfect hooks one leg, but Bret reaches the bottom rope with his other foot so he hooks both but still only gets a nearfall. Perfect sends Bret into the corner across the ring, sternum first and covers for another nearfall. Mr Perfect decks Bret and climbs to the top rope again, but the referee seems to think Bill Watts is running things, trying to talk Perfect down. Bret Hart makes a recovery and meets Perfect on the top rope hitting a superplex. Bret Hart rolls over for the cover but only gets 2. Bret Hart starts kicking at Perfect's knee, softening him up for a Figure Four in the middle of the ring. Brain tells Ross to slap him on commentary for cheering Perfect, Ross would be happy to. Mr Perfect tries to reverse the pressure, but Bret rolls him back forcing him to reach the ropes and the referee to separate them.
Both men are on one good leg now, Bret trips Perfect and drops an elbow to the knee, grapevining the leg. Mr Perfect tries to use Bret's hair to escape the hold but kicks his way out instead. Randy Savage says that whoever wins this match will be easy picking for Bam Bam Bigelow later tonight. Mr Perfect sends Bret's head into the turnbuckle and sends him across the ring by his ears and his hair. Mr Perfect sends Hart across the ring catching him in a sleeper hold. The brain's sure it's an illegal choke. Bret tries to grab Perfect's hair, but his grip is released, in a funny moment the referee gets on his knees to check on Bret just as Bret bursts to life, the look on his face as he starts standing cracks me up. Bret slumps himself into the ropes. Mr Perfect uses all of the 5-count that he can before breaking the hold then falls back on his ass. Perfect chops at Bret's chest before going back to the sleeper hold. Perfect uses the bottom rope for leverage out of the referee's view. We've passed the 15-minute mark as Bret starts fading in the sleeper hold. He gets to his feet and sends Perfect into the turnbuckles as JR mentions that Bam Bam could be the King of the Ring through one match if this goes to the time limit. Bret Hart decks Perfect and sends him into the turnbuckle. He sends Perfect all the way across the ring and he crotches himself on the ring post. It looked a bit forced but it was a nice callback to their Summerslam match. Bret Hart hits an inverted atomic drop and a Russian legsweep for 2. Bret hits a standing leg drop and a backbreaker, he climbs to the middle rope and hits the elbow drop for another nearfall. Mr Perfect blocks a sharpshooter attempt, grabbing Hart's left hand and bringing it down to the mat for Perfect to stomp on it. Mr Perfect tries a Perfectplex but Bret blocks it, he blocks a vertical suplex attempt too but they're near the ropes and they both tumble over the top to the floor! Mr Perfect gets back in the ring first, happy to take a count-out. Bret makes it to the ring at 3 and the referee makes him wait for Perfect to get to his feet. Mr Perfect tries to catch Bret with an inside cradle but Bret rolls through 1, 2, 3!
WINNER: BRET HART
If you're supposed to go easy and conserve yourself in these one-night tournaments, no one told these two. Besides the “my dad can beat up your dad” before the match (we weren't going to get a payoff with the two pairs facing off, it just looked petty.) the callback with crotching the ringpost was the only fault I could find with the match and that's nitpicking. Bret Hart's 2 for 2 in excellent (pun intended) King of the Ring matches. At least he didn't have to drag one out of Mr. Hughes. Commentary made this match fun and the match seemed to fly by. – WORKRATE: 3.25/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 3.5/5 OVERALL 6.75/10
