HUNTER HEARST HELMSLEY VS. BOB HOLLY

I've changed my mind again! I'm going to post twice-daily this week. A Lucha Underground match per day, and another post that will help with my Amazon Affiliate program. Today's match is the first WWF Pay-Per-View match with two guys I haven't reviewed yet, one being a surprise to me. This will continue on from the Hakushi vs. 1-2-3 Kid review here. After the replays of the match Dok Hendrix is backstage with 1995 King of the Ring, Mabel. Hendrix wants to know Mabel's plan, he's getting really excited about it. Mabel says he's going to have to find out when everyone else does. Diesel appears to have Mabel's number, but he has a big plan in store for him. Helmsley is playing the Blue Blood snob at this point in his career and is undefeated so far, Bob “Sparkplug” Holly enters the match and he's got a decent following. It's still strange seeing long brown hair on him for me, since I only knew him as Hardcore Holly for so long. Hunter Hearst Helmsley takes his time getting ready for the match in his corner.

HUNTER HEARST-HELMSLEY VS. BOB HOLLY
WWF Summerslam 1995 (27th August 1995)

(C) World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.

Helmsley stalls to start, avoiding locking up. Holly gets sick of that and slams Helmsley to the mat, Holly sends him over with an arm drag and Helmsley backs off into a corner. Helmsley socks Holly with a cheap shot over the referee's shoulder and hits a European uppercut sending him into the corner. Helmsley chops his chest but Holly reverses an irish whip, hitting Helmsley with a swift back elbow. Holly gets the advantage in the corner, and sends Helmsley across the ring. Helmsley catches Holly and lifts him, dropping him over the top rope. Holly tries to slide out of the ring to catch his breath but Helmsley keeps on him in the corner. The referee backs him off before he can be disqualified, but he returns with forearms. Helmsley returns a third time to choke Holly in the corner. Helmsley sends Holly across the ring, bringing his spinal cord through his stomach with the force before hitting a backbreaker for 2 as we hear British Bulldog has been seen entering the building.

Helmsley hits a suplex on Holly and backs into the corner for a knee drop. He covers for another 2 count before driving his knee into the lower back of Holly. We see Bulldog enter to prove McMahon wasn't lying. Helmsley pulls back on Holly's neck so we don't miss anything important. Helmsley locks in an abdominal stretch as they get to their feet and uses the ropes for leverage. The referee notices, so he has to let go and Holly reverses it into one of his own. Helmsley immediately hip tosses Holly over the top to the floor. Holly slowly gets back on the apron, and Helmsley brings him back in the ring, sending him across to the other side. Helmsley ducks too early, getting caught with a DDT and both men are down. Helmsley makes it up first, clearing the cobwebs. He sends Holly across the ring, setting up for another backbreaker but Holly uses the momentum to get back to his feet! Holly sends Helmsley across the ring and meets him with a standing dropkick. Helmsley again is the first to his feet, but he gets caught in an inverted atomic drop. Bob Holly knocks Helmsley down with a lariat and works him over in the corner. Helmsley is sent into the turnbuckles, walking out into a back body drop. Helmsley is sent into the turnbuckles again, this time walking out into another amazing dropkick. Holly's strategy is working so he tries it again, this time Helmsley blocks the back body drop, hitting the pedigree! Helmsley remains undefeated.

WINNER: HUNTER HEARST-HELMSLEY

Before the next match we see highlights of a “War on the Water” charity event, where some WWF Superstars took on the Pittsburgh Fire Department in a tug of war contest over the lake. The losing team had to take a swim, and that was the team from the Fire Department in the end.

Not a match I would have said I enjoyed. It was there, and short. It got them both some TV time and they both got something to work within the short time they had. I never thought career midcarder Hardcore Holly could look competitive against Triple H but he did here. – WORKRATE: 2/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 2/5 OVERALL 4/10
