We begin with a video package voiced over by Jeremy Borash. It covers the TNA World Heavyweight Championship match between Drew Galloway and Bobby Lashley. Showing Lashley beating Galloway down and Galloway getting back up again, and it briefly touches on the Full Metal Mayhem match between Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy tonight. Brother vs. Brother. Reviewed here. We are then welcomed to the broadcast by Jeremy Borash in the ring. This event is taking place the night of the horrific Orlando shooting, and begins with a moment's silence with TNA wrestlers and staff stood at the top of the ramp. With the #StrongOrlando hashtag visible on the big screen.
After this announcement, another video package plays looking at more of the card, and Josh Matthews welcomes us on commentary. We get yet another video package for the X Division. The first entrant to the match is one half of The Wolves with Davey Richards. They're 5-time tag team champions and Matthews says Eddie Edwards should already be X-Division champion, if it wasn't for Gregory Helms. His partner on commentary, The Pope agrees. DJZ enters next wearing a pretty weird get-up, but Matthews and Pope talk like his wrestling makes up for it. Apparently he's new and improved. Trevor Lee and Andrew Everett enter together, Gregory Helms has them under his wing as the Helms Dynasty, however they do not have him at ringside, as JB announces that he was banned by TNA Management. It must be easier for him to say that with the turnover rate there... Matthews and Pope say that's a great call. The fans wave Helms off.
TREVOR LEE © vs. EDDIE EDWARDS vs. DJZ vs. ANDREW EVERETT
(TNA X-DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP)
TNA Slammiversary (12th June 2016)
Eddie Edwards and DJZ don't wait for him to be far from ringside before they pair off with the Helms Dynasty. Hitting stereo baseball slide dropkicks from behind. DJZ and Trevor Lee take off one way, with Edwards and Everett elsewhere at ringside. They meet in the middle and the Helms Dynasty eat apron together. Trevor Lee takes a chop to the chest but turns the tables on DJZ, helping his partner out. DJZ sends him into the apron and hits a step-up hurricanrana using the ring steps! Andrew Everett uses the top step to backflip but his showing off costs him, with Edwards sending him into DJZ who lifts him overhead with a back body drop. Those steps don't feel too springy off your spine. They isolate the champion and throw him in the ring. The bell to officially start the match finally goes.
DJZ and Edwards double team the champion in the ring and he collapses into a corner. As three former examples of X-Division champions, Josh Matthew chooses AJ Styles (first champion), Rob Van Dam, Chris Sabin (most championship reigns) and Amazing Red. What a strange group. Lee gets sent across the ring and DJZ follows with a back elbow, quickly followed by an Edwards forearm. Eddie Edwards sends the champion into a standing dropkick by DJZ rocking him then clotheslines him out to the floor. DJZ tries to roll Edwards up from behind and it starts a sweet series of quick nearfalls between the two, ending in a standoff. Trevor Lee tries to climb to the top turnbuckle but DJZ quickly sends him back to the floor. DJZ ducks a clothesline and back elbow by Edwards but gets tripped by Lee. Lee drags DJZ outside and tries to jump Edwards. Edwards is ready with a back elbow but gets caught with a kick to the gut as Josh Matthews talks about his blog... Hahaha! What a nerd... Eddie Edwards kinda suplexes Lee over the top rope, but it looked like his neck took some damage too and he falls out of the ring too. Andrew Everett's found his way back into the match as all three of his opponents are in a heap on the floor. SPRINGBOARD CORKSCREW PLANCHA TAKES THEM ALL OUT!
After slight resistance, Everett is able to get Edwards into the ring. Trevor Lee is back on his feet too, and he's not far behind looking to protect his championship. The Helms Dynasty double-team Edwards as we see a replay of the corkscrew plancha. Lee sends Edwards hard into the turnbuckles and he collapses to the mat. The Helms Dynasty take a moment of early celebration before Lee bites at Edwards' nose. Andrew Everett gives Lee some momentum but he runs into a boot. Everett is met with an elbow but Everett drop toe hold's Edwards into a knee strike by the champion. DJZ gets back on the apron and catches Everett with a shoulder to the gut, he rolls back in the ring over Everett and rolls under Lee, sending him into Everett. DJZ hits a jawbreaker on Lee before taking them both out with a back elbow off the middle rope. The Pope compares DJZ to Ricky Steamboat....ahhh. Everett is sent over the top rope and we can agree on that at least. Trevor Lee catches DJZ but they each avoid clotheslines from each other before DJZ catches him with a running forearm. DJZ holds the ropes for Edwards to charge across the ring and hit Everett with a tope through the ropes!!
DJZ is on Lee's shoulders, Lee's looking for his modified german suplex but DJZ rolls through. DJZ gets a nearfall before Lee kicks out, DJZ uses the momentum for a somersault senton onto Edwards and Everett on the floor! DJZ gets back on the apron, avoiding being sent into the top turnbuckle. He kicks it into Lee's face and climbs on it. Really utilizing this one turnbuckle, I hope the others don't get jealous and break out of spite... DJZ jumps to the mat clearing Lee but gets clocked with a running forearm. Andrew Everett covers from nowhere but Lee breaks it up. They argue and don't see Edwards climb to the top rope, so he takes them both out with a single-leg missile dropkick. Lee backs into a corner from an inverted atomic drop. Everett takes an inverted atomic drop too and Edwards hits Kobashi chops on Lee in the corner! Everett attacks Edwards from behind but he gets the same treatment. Edwards sends Everett across the ring but is met with a boot. Edwards hits a Blue Thunder Bomb, 1, 2, Penalty Kick by Lee! Edwards' head just landed in Tampa! DJZ hits Everett with double knees, but then flips in the air with Trevor Lee on some crazy crossbody shit! 1, 2, 2.9999 NO!
Eddie Edwards interrupts Lee's attempt at a move on DJZ with a step-up enziguri but Everett defies physics with a crazy pele like kick. DJZ runs at both Helms Dynasty members but Everett ducks, DJZ takes a caveman stomp! Lee stands up into a superkick by Edwards, 1, 2, 2.999, still, the champion gets a shoulder up! Eddie Edwards climbs to the top rope but Everett is able to distract him so Lee can get up. DJZ charges at Lee, ending up on the middle rope with Edwards. He kicks Lee away and tries to superplex Edwards. Lee is back to the corner bringing DJZ down with a german suplex! Andrew Everett springboards from the top rope for a super hurricanrana! He covers Edwards but can't get the win. We get a replay of the super german suplex by Lee as Everett gets to the top rope and lands on his feet from a 450 attempt, right into a DDT by DJZ! Trevor Lee breaks the cover up at the last second. DJZ goes out to the apron and hits Lee with a shoulder to the gut but eats a jumping knee by the champion. Edwards and Lee trade forearms in the ring. Edwards gets a combination together but walks into a jumping forearm. A jumping knee catches Edwards off guard. Edwards counters the Orange Crush and steals the championship!
WINNER: EDDIE EDWARDS (NEW TNA X-DIVISION CHAMPION)
This was a nice, fast-paced match. From what commentary told us of the story (Helms helping Lee keep the championship, Everett wanting it and Helms being content, at least, with it staying with his Dynasty. With the current result screwing Edwards over. So Edwards getting the championship was the right call here too. They all worked well together and the nearfall battle between DJZ and EE was just pure awesome. WORKRATE: 4.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 4/5 OVERALL 8.5/10
Edwards celebrates in the ring as Lee sits on the arena floor distraught and we get highlights of the match.
