DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE VS. CHAVO GUERRERO JR

Help out the blog by bookmarking this link to Amazon.

The opening video package focuses on the takeover from The New World Order, with Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Hulk Hogan and The Giant currently being members. “Sting” has also shockingly turned on WCW to join nWo for tonight's War Games main event. After the introduction we see our announcers for this evening “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Tony Schiovane. They talk some more about the main event as Rhodes says the playing field has shifted in nWo's favour, Heenan reminds him that this match was made for the Horsemen and not to count them out. Dusty Rhodes knows that... It was his idea! We see clips of “Sting” turning on Luger last Monday on Nitro, then the New World Order smashing Luger's car windows in last night on WCW Saturday Night. All three commentators seem convinced this could be nWo's last pay-per-view. Oh boy.... To clarify it's Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and either Sting or The Giant against Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Lex Luger and again possibly Sting. Heenan says Team WCW will have no problem finding a fourth man if they need to. Diamond Dallas Page enters first, still a heel surprisingly to me, before Chavo Guerrero Jr. joins him for this “grudge match” and Chavo must be in his rookie year here as Rhodes puts over the Guerrero family.

DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE VS. CHAVO GUERRERO JR
WCW Fall Brawl (15th September 1996)

Diamond Dallas Page tries to attack Chavo before the bell but Chavo ducks, Chavo hits a dropkick sticking Page between the ropes, another running dropkick sends him to the floor. Chavo flies over the top rope with a somersault senton and stomps on DDP before sending him into the guard rail. Chavo sends DDP into the ring steps, although the camera man nearly misses it, before whipping him with a leather belt. Chavo finally brings the match back into the ring with a slingshot splash for a nearfall. DDP sends Chavo into the ropes, he ducks a clothesline and comes back at him with a running cross body for another nearfall. DDP runs into an arm drag, and Chavo keeps him on the mat. Chavo drops his knee on DDP's elbow, keeping him down with a top wristlock. DDP makes it to his feet, pushing Chavo into the ropes, Chavo holds on as DDP tries to escape, bringing him down with another arm drag. Diamond Dallas Page gets to his feet, trying to break Chavo's leverage the best he can. He brings Chavo down to the mat by his hair, but Chavo kips back up. Again DDP brings Chavo down for him to spring back up. Chavo brings DDP down to the mat by his hair and releases the hold.

Chavo Guerrero Jr catches DDP with a drop toe hold as they get to their feet. Chavo goes back to the arm, pinning DDP to the mat with his bodyweight, DDP gets to his feet as Chavo lets up, trying to push Chavo's head away and kneeing him in the gut. Chavo is knocked down as DDP tries to get some feeling in his left arm. Chavo's sent across the ring and he counters a tilt-a-whirl into an arm drag, sending Dallas across the ring. Chavo hits a standing dropkick wedging DDP between the ropes again, but DDP avoids the second one this time, dropping to the floor, and sending Chavo out with him. DDP's the first to his feet, and he beats down on Chavo at ringside before breaking up the count. DDP sends Chavo into the ring and knocks him down with a flying clothesline. DDP congratulates himself for a while before stomping on Chavo and hitting an elbow drop to the back of the head. That gives DDP the confidence to tell the referee to ask Chavo if he wants to quit. Chavo doesn't “The Guerreros have a heart of a lion” - Dusty Rhodes DDP decides to wear Chavo down with a front facelock on one knee. Chavo makes it to his feet but DDP takes him over for a nearfall.

DDP stomps Chavo some more, even attacking his hand before choking him and using the ropes for leverage. He uses every fraction of the 5-count he possibly can. DDP is an awesome heel here. He gets a 1 count with a cover using his shin, but it's suspiciously high so the referee starts to count for a choke. DDP takes too long setting up Chavo for a suplex and Chavo rolls him up, 1, 2, 2 ½ DDP kicks out. DDP kicks Chavo in the ribs and hits a falling elbow drop to the back of his head. DDP starts getting confident now, as Chavo is using him just to get back to his feet. DDP toys with Chavo, knocking him down, then helping him to his feet to absorb a clubbing blow. Page kicks at Chavo before sending him chest first into the turnbuckles. Chavo stumbles back, Page lifts him for a back suplex and throws him to the mat. DDP takes his time to cover, and it gets him a pair of nearfalls as Heenan calls the Guerrero family quitters. DDP locks in a chinlock on the mat, he decides to try to hyperextend Chavo's left arm whilst pulling back on his chin for a while. Chavo untraps his right arm, so DDP transitions to a chinlock.

Chavo tries to break the hold, so DDP uses Chavo's on arm to apply a Cobra Clutch on the mat. We see the War Games cage above the rings. Tony Schiovane puts the match over as the Four Horsemen's playground. Chavo gets to his feet as we focus on the match now, and knees to the midsection break the hold, DDP gets a short-arm clothesline knocking Chavo down for another close nearfall. DDP's frustrated he hasn't put the youngster away yet, and he mocks Chavo. Chavo hits him in the midsection and trips his leg. Both men are down and Chavo has to use the ropes to get up. DDP charges but is met with a knee to the ribs, Chavo slides out to the apron before leaping to the top rope, then hits Page with a flying clothesline. Chavo decides top turnbuckle time now and he hits a missile dropkick for a nearfall. A flying hurricanrana hits the mark but DDP still kicks out at 2 ½. DDP uses the corner to get to a vertical base, but Chavo sends him across the ring. Chavo runs into a back elbow and DDP covers, he uses the ropes for leverage but only gets 2. Cheaters never prosper, kids. DDP throws Chavo into the other ring and apparently the match can still continue although in previous years it's been a count out. Tony Schovane and Dusty Rhodes pretty much admit WCW's a shambles in a way that doesn't get them fired. DDP hits a sidewalk slam in the ring and covers for a nearfall. Page is getting really frustrated now. He's failed to pin Chavo Guerrero Jr in BOTH RINGS! He knocks Chavo into the ropes with a forearm. Chavo telegraphs another sidewalk slam countering into a headscissors takedown. DDP reverses an irish whip, but Chavo is able to sneak around him for a roll up 1, 2 no! DDP counters an irish whip sending Chavo across the ring, he picks him up and drops him with a modified sitout powerbomb, Chavo kicks out at 2.9! DDP only has the Diamond Cutter left... Chavo counters into a backslide, but he can't get DDP down! DDP stomps on Chavo's foot and spins him back around, DIAMOND CUTTER CONNECTS! 1, 2, 3.

WINNER: DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE

I need to remember to look at DDP's heel work (1995-1997 approximated) more. He was really good in this role. He's been in two very different matches, neither with experienced workers, and I've enjoyed them both. It didn't have to be much, but it woke the crowd up for the rest of the show. That was priority #1. – WORKRATE: 4.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 4.25/5 OVERALL 8.75/10
