Jerry “The King” Lawler, Booker T and Michael Cole are on commentary for this match. Last month, both of these guys were involved in the Smackdown Money in the Bank ladder match. D-Bry kicked Barrett from the ladder before unhooking the briefcase to win the match. Last Friday on Smackdown Barrett attacked Daniel Bryan after the “first ever Money in the Bank winner vs. Money in the Bank winner” match against Raw's Alberto Del Rio. Michael Cole is still unjustifiably burying Bryan on commentary at this point. Including mocking Bryan's decision to announce in advance he would cash the Money in the Bank contract in at Wrestlemania. (Even though Mr. Kennady did the exact same thing in 2007, and RVD announced cashing in at ECW's One Night Stand 2006 in advance.)
WADE BARRETT VS. DANIEL BRYAN
WWE Summerslam (14th August 2011)
The bell rings and Barrett draws first blood with a kick to the gut. He controls Bryan with strikes before grabbing a side headlock. Daniel Bryan sends Barrett off the ropes but is knocked down with a shoulder block, Bryan goes prone then sends Barrett over with a knee to the gut. Bryan hits a pair of European uppercuts to the European guy and jacks Barrett's arm over his own shoulder. Barrett hits D-Bry with a right hand. Barrett starts to control Bryan's arm dropping him to his knees, but Bryan athletically breaks the hold and knocks Barrett down with a standing dropkick. Bryan brings Barrett down to the mat with a hammerlock. Bryan bends Barrett's other arm back and it counts as a pin, giving Daniel Bryan a nearfall. Cole less than enthusiastically puts over Bryan's submission skills on commentary. Bryan goes back to the hammerlock but Barrett gets to his feet and elbows his way out. Daniel Bryan leapfrogs Barrett before going prone, then drops him with another standing dropkick. Bryan covers but only gets 2.
Barrett is brought to his feet but he hits Bryan with a right hand and a knee to the face, sending him into the corner. Barrett softens up Bryan with more strikes in the corner, Bryan avoids being sent into the turnbuckles and crawls under Barrett and brings him over with a dragon screw. Barrett gets to his feet in the corner, but not for long as Bryan hits him with a SCREAMING dropkick. Bryan gets a nearfall and wants a surfboard but he can't get Barrett's shoulders, so he stomps his knees into the mat instead. Daniel Bryan hits a running kick to Barrett's chest knocking him down and gets another nearfall. Barrett gets to his feet in the corner and eats a European uppercut. Barrett reverses the irish whip but Bryan's immune to them, this time going up and back over a charging Barret. Daniel Bryan runs into Barret's Blackhole Slam and he gets a nearfall. Wade Barrett stays on Bryan with mounted rights and a stomp to the head as we see a replay of what just happened.
Barrett brings Bryan up, rebounding him off the top rope into a backbreaker, but it's still only enough to get Barrett 2 ½. Barrett applies a loose camel clutch like move on the mat and brings Bryan back, but that allows Bryan to get to his feet and elbow his way out. Bryan ducks a clothesline and hits a jumping version of his own. Bryan sends Barrett into the ropes with a European uppercut, and he hits another before picking up some speed. Unfortunately, that just means Barrett's flying forearm hurts more and Barrett covers for a nearfall as Booker T and Cole mention Barrett doesn't leave his feet often. Bryan crawls to the ropes as we get more replays, and Barrett chokes him on the middle rope. Barrett hits Bryan with Muay Thai knees whilst Bryan's in the ropes before knocking him down to the floor with a running boot. Much to Michael Cole's delight.
Barrett gets Daniel Bryan in the ring and immediately covers, but Bryan still kicks out at 2. Wade Barrett applies a chinlock on the mat and Michael Cole congratulates Cody Rhodes on his Intercontinental Championship victory over Ezekiel Jackson last Friday on Smackdown. Bryan gets to his feet and elbows at Barrett and hits him with a pair of hard kicks. Barrett regains control with a right hand and sends Bryan over the top rope, but Bryan lands on the apron. Barrett turns back around to discover this fact and charges at Bryan. Bryan ducks a big boot crotching Barrett on the top rope. Barrett is now out on the apron and they slug it out. Barrett gets the advantage and has Bryan on his shoulders for a Wasteland! Bryan escapes back into the ring and knocks Barrett to the arena floor with a running dropkick. Barrett knocked his head on the security barrier! Daniel Bryan finds the energy and will to get to his feet on the apron as Barrett does the same on the floor. Bryan hits a running knee off the apron!
Wade Barrett gets closer to the ring, using it to stay on his feet. Bryan's there behind him and he throws Barrett back in. Daniel Bryan climbs to the top rope hitting a missile dropkick. Daniel Bryan covers but Barrett kicks out at 2, and we get a close-up, he looks like he has no clue where he is. Barrett stops himself on an irish whip attempt and kicks Bryan in the midsection. Daniel Bryan avoids a pumphandle slam and kicks at Barrett's leg until he drops to the canvas. Wade Barrett gets to his feet and Bryan aims more kicks at his chest. Barrett gets knocked down again with a final kick to the skull and Bryan covers for a close 2 count. Barrett uses the corner to get to his feet and avoids a charging Daniel Bryan, Bryan lands on the middle rope but runs into a big boot! Wade Barrett picks Bryan up for a Wasteland but Bryan elbows out and applies a standing guillotine choke, Barrett drops to his knees and Bryan transitions to a LaBelle lock! Barrett is able to crawl to the ropes.
Daniel Bryan has a new target now, aiming for Barrett's shoulder with his kicks. He perches Barrett on the top rope, but Barrett is able to shove Bryan, crotching him on the top rope. Barrett hits a flying clothesline and hits the Wasteland to end it.
WINNER: WADE BARRETT
This was a pretty solid match. They both looked pretty even and had a good showing. However that's the problem, Bryan should have got the win here. But because he had the Money in the Bank contract WWE decided he didn't need to win. Seriously go back and look at his win/loss record around this time. Just as Bryan got some decent shoulder work in it didn't mean anything. Barrett just clotheslined him and hit the wasteland. Both of which should have been hindered by Barrett's arm. Minor glitches with the match and the wrong winner, but overall a decent use of Pay-Per-View time. The crowd was also into it, warming them up nicely for the two main events. – WORKRATE: 4/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 3/5 OVERALL 7/10
