SHANE MCMAHON (C) VS. STEVE BLACKMAN

Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler on commentary for this match. Lawler has just come off a victory over Tazz, including an assist from JR. We go backstage to Terri Runnels asking Shane McMahon how he feels about Kurt Angle kissing his sister. Because obviously, that's what's on his mind. He doesn't get far before Steve Blackman shows up asking if Shane's ready to play. Shane had some assistance from Test and Albert to beat Blackman for the Hardcore championship and he runs out to the ring nervously, happy to have any space between him and Blackman. Blackman enters as Lawler mentions that Shane suspended the Hardcore championship's 24/7 rule. Not that it will mean much facing Blackman tonight. Shane O Mac scurries from the ring as Blackman slides in wielding a kendo stick. He had a trash can too but left that on the outside for later. Shane cautiously stands on the apron but goes no further before the bell rings. Blackman throws Shane the kendo stick but he doesn't want it. Again they throw it back and forth as the North Carolina fans call Shane a pussy. Blackman throws the kendo stick down and turns his back to Shane.

(WWF HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP)

WWF Summerslam (27th August 2000)

McMahon charges at Blackman with the weapon but Blackman turns and blocks it. Blackman and Shane engage in a brief tug-of-war for the kendo stick before Blackman jabs Shane in the ribs with it. A right hand sends Shane outside to rethink his strategy. He has to think and run as Blackman gives chase. Shane escapes into the crowd but somehow Blackman is able to cut him off, jumping off the barrier with the trash can. Blackman kicks Shane up the bleachers but he grabs his trash can and gives Shane time to fight back. Blackman able to kick Shane in the gut before he can use the trash can either. Blackman strikes Shane in the face and slams it into the trash can, or what's left of it before sending Shane back to ringside. Blackman jumps off the barrier with a front kick knocking Shane down and grabs some trash can lids from under the ring. Blackman brings Shane in the ring, sending him across and caving his knee cap in with the trash can lid.

Shane is knocked down with another shot across the back and Blackman throws the mangled metal away. Luckily he has another to hit Shane with a spinning back strike across the back of the head. Blackman gets a trash can and some martial arts sticks as he's really enjoying making the WWF Hardcore Division his home territory. Blackman puts the trash can over Shane's head and smashes it with the martial arts sticks. Knocking Shane down with shots to his knees. Steve Blackman puts an exclamation point on it with a thrust kick. Blackman isn't done yet though. He says so and my value for my own life makes me inclined to believe him. He uses one of the martial arts sticks to assist with a back suplex and grabs a leather strap he brought into the ring earlier. He puts it around Shane's neck and hits him with lefts and rights to the midsection before sending him across the ring with the strap. Shane's lifted onto the top turnbuckle and he unceremoniously tugs him back down to the centre of the ring. Blackman applies a boston crab using the strap around Shane's neck to choke him too, but Test and Albert arrive to attack Blackman!

Test and Albert send the Lethal Weapon across the ring but there's miscommunication on a Baldo Bomb. Albert takes it to Blackman as Test wedges a trash can into one corner ready for Blackman to be sent into it. Albert avalanches Blackman in the corner, and sends him into a trash can lid shot by Edge as JR talks about Test being left at the alter by Shane's sister last year, and now he's relieved. Shane McMahon is back on his feet barking out orders. Albert places a trash can lid on Steve Blackman's chest and Test jumps off the top rope with an elbow drop. Test and Albert hold Blackman in place and Shane jabs at him. Shane sees a trash can lid and decides he wants to punctuate the combination with it but Blackman kicks it back in his face! Blackman hits Test but Albert is able to clothesline him down and the numbers game comes back into play. Test and Albert send Blackman into a flying sign shot and he rolls out of the ring. Test and Albert stalk him as Shane O'Mac leads him up the entrance ramp using the leather strap like a lead.

They lay Blackman down at the top of the entranceway and Albert tries to hold him in place. Test and Shane push a speaker over, the same way Shane beat Big Show back at Judgement Day! Blackman is able to avoid having his legs mangled and fights back against T&A. 3 on 1 will never go well for Blackman for long though and Shane and Test hold him as Albert has a kendo stick. Albert accidentally hits Test! Blackman grabs the weapon and lays out both members of T&A before being blindsided by Shane. Shane legs it and starts climbing the structure. Blackman swings the cane but Shane is able to avoid it. Shane gets to the top and has nowhere else to run. He kicks at Blackman but can't knock him down. Blackman gets Shane with the kendo stick, allowing him to close the gap further. Blackman bounces the kendo stick off Shane's back sending him falling 50 feet to the ground! Blackman drops the kendo stick, slides himself down and finally drops the elbow on Shane from the structure, draping his arm barely over Shane to cover and winning back the Hardcore Championship.

WINNER: STEVE BLACKMAN

This is another match where “work rate” might be less appropriate of a phrase than “match style” as work rate is more technical and psychology based, but I try to review each match as its own entity as well as a part of the bigger wrestling picture. Shane was the Boss' son that will use every advantage and twist every rule he can in his father's company to get ahead. Blackman is the blue collar fighting man who works for everything he has and had it taken away from him by Shane and opportunities taken from him since Commissioner Foley suspended the 24/7 rule. WORK RATE: 1.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT: 2.75/5 OVERALL:4.25 /10
