Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler on commentary for this match. We see the Lion's Den before a video package shows Blackman and Shamrock fighting over recent weeks, including in some sort of Parking Lot Brawl style match. Blackman has injured and targeted Shamrock since the former's return and he got to pick the weapons tied to the walkway. I see chains and kendo sticks. We see Blackman has an extra pair of nunchucks in his tights as he enters first. Shamrock enters as Lawler says he's skilled in hand to hand combat, but this includes weapons too. But if Shamrock's that dangerous with his fists, imagine what he'll do in this environment. JR pretty much says this is a fight to the finish with weapons. No pinfalls or submissions and the referee is above the match on the walkway as they're locked in the cage.
KEN SHAMROCK VS. STEVE BLACKMAN
(LIONS DEN WEAPONS MATCH)
WWF Summerslam (22nd August 1999)
Blackman misses a swing with the nunchucks. A second shot to the knee doesn't though, and Shamrock takes one to the face too. Blackman misses a thrust kick and Shamrock grabs his leg to take him over. Shamrock wrenches on Blackman's knee. If he can't stand he can't fight. However Blackman can stand and does so, but Shamrock pushes him over with his feet. Shamrock quickly grabs the nunchucks but misses and Blackman sweeps his leg. Blackman retrieves the nunchucks and uses them to choke out Shamrock, walking him around the ring. Shamrock is sent into the cage wall but blocks the second attempt, sending Blackman over and locking in an arm bar. Shamrock kicks Blackman's ribs with his heel and starts some ground and pound before throwing the nunchucks out of the cage. Shamrock sends Blackman into the cage and knees him in the head. More cage work now with Shamrock sending Blackman across the structure into the mesh and he bounces back into a roundhouse kick!
Ken Shamrock retrieves a kendo stick but Blackman blocks it and fights back. Sending Shamrock into the mesh. Blackman's favouring his forearm since it took the full force of the kendo stick shot and he sends Shamrock across the cage again. Lawler wants Blackman to use the cane. Shamrock is sent into one of the support beams and Blackman kicks him across the back of the head. Steve Blackman hits an inverted atomic drop before climbing the cage for some martial arts sticks. Lawler and JR don't know what they're called. Whatever their name is they feel the same to Shamrock as Blackman whacks the shit out of him. Blackman mainly focuses on the midsection for this part, but he doesn't discriminate. Blackman chokes Shamrock out with one of the sticks, but Shamrock makes it to his feet. Blackman tries to send Shamrock into the cage but Shamrock leaps off launching himself into Blackman! Both guys feel the effects of that as JR reminds us there's no pinfalls or submissions. Causing Lawler to ask if there are any more weapons.
Blackman climbs the cage as they get to their feet but Shamrock cuts him off. Shamrock hits a back suplex on Blackman as we see he was going for the chain, and Shamrock is straight on him with right hands. Blackman reverses an irish whip and knees Shamrock in the gut before nailing a DDT. Blackman is so hell-bent on getting the chain that Shamrock cuts him off again, sending him into the cage and hitting a powerslam as he comes back. Both guys duck a kick, Shamrock catches a kick from Blackman but then eats an enziguri. Blackman grabs a fresh kendo stick and attacks Shamrock's knee. Another shot to the midsection knocks Shamrock down. Steve Blackman nails Shamrock across the throat as he gets to his feet. Blackman takes his time measuring Shamrock up... He smashes the kendo stick against Shamrock's head! Blackman could walk out now but he doesn't. Shamrock is able to avoid a running kick and takes Blackman over with the belly to belly! Shamrock decides to take some revenge attacking Blackman with the kendo stick. One final shot to Blackman's skull knocks him out.
WINNER: KEN SHAMROCK
The work rate portion of this match is hard to rate. It was a different style to the last match, with the weapons adding a more striking dynamic instead of the technical mat work between Ken Shamrock and Owen Hart last year. I have a casual interest in martial arts and that all looked very crisp and correct. The weapon work was well done and Shamrock taking some time to make it hand to hand in order to gain an advantage in a familiar environment worked well. WORK RATE: 1.25/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT: 3.25/5 OVERALL:4.5 /10
