CHAVO GUERRERO VS. REY MYSTERIO (2007)

This is Rey Mysterio's return match after Chavo put him on the shelf last year. We get a video of Rey flying around to tell us he's returning. Michael Cole says this match is built on Chavo's jealousy taking us back to Smackdown a few weeks ago. Chavo Guerrero dressed up as Rey Mysterio, mocking that “Rey” didn't want to face Chavo since Chavo put him on the shelf, making him say “I Quit” he even used Rey's mannerisms against an enhancement talent dressed as Rey. He couldn't hit a 619, falling through the ropes and the crowd mocked him. From then Chavo snapped, attacking his opponents' knees like Rey and putting Rey's mask on them. JBL and Cole on commentary and Michael Cole says Chavo Guerrero's jealous of Rey Mysterio. Before he can get too far JBL reminds him that Chavo is still a Guerrero that deserves respect. Chavo enters first, leaving Rey Rey's reveal until the last moment. The place explodes as his music hits and they get the first glimpse of him. The referee Charles Robinson keeps Chavo at bay, but he doesn't take his eyes off Mysterio. Rey Mysterio's gear is inspired by the Silver Surfer, he even has body paint on.

CHAVO GUERRERO VS. REY MYSTERIO
WWE Summerslam (26th August 2007)

They go nose to nose and Rey shoves Chavo. Chavo stalls, circling with Mysterio as the fans tell him he sucks. Chavo dives right for Rey's left knee that he injured taking him down but misses the elbow drop. They lock up and Rey sends Chavo down to the mat, the referee counts Chavo's shoulders down but he bridges out. Rey tries to force Chavo's shoulders down with his weight but can't do it. Chavo brings Rey to his feet, using the momentum to stand too, then flips Rey over, Rey brings them to their feet too and sends Chavo out to think about what he's done with a wheelbarrow arm drag. Michael Cole and JBL talk about how well these two know each other as Rey allows Chavo back into the ring. They lock up and Rey gets Chavo in the corner, Chavo is able to force Rey against the ropes and starts kicking at Rey's injured knee before wrapping it around the middle rope. The referee has to make Chavo break the hold.

Rey Mysterio avoids a running dropkick sending Chavo back outside through the ropes, following him with a somersault senton. Because Chavo's kicks don't do damage? Rey sends Chavo into the ring steps and sends him back into the ring, working his knee too with kicks. Chavo cowers to the corner but can't avoid some boots from Rey. The referee has to restrain Rey, but he follows up with a dropkick to Chavo's knee. Another kick fires Chavo up to try and strike his way out of the corner but Rey comes back with a hurricanrana from the middle rope sending Chavo across the ring. Rey is sent over the top to the apron, Rey shoulder barges Chavo through the ropes and climbs to the top, but Chavo crotches him, hanging him in the Tree of Woe! Chavo starts assaulting the left knee of Rey as he's hung helplessly from the top turnbuckle. He pulls at Rey's ankle, trying to twist the knee more and the referee has to bring him away. Rey Mysterio gets himself free dropping to a heap in the corner, and Chavo hits a dropkick to Rey's knee and wrapping it around the ring post.

Chavo kicks at Rey's knee, then lets him get to his feet. Rey flips backward on a kick to the hamstring, Chavo brings Rey away from the ropes and elbow drops his knee, before snapping it across Rey's body. Chavo covers but Rey kicks out with his good leg at 1. Chavo wraps Rey's knee around his neck, stretching it out more. Rey eventually kicks his way out, and a headscissors gives Rey some separation, but only momentarily as Chavo quickly dropkicks the knee again. JBL blames Rey for being sat next to Cole because JBL lost a retirement match to Rey. Chavo keeps working the leg, twisting it between his knee and bridging back. Rey's shoulders go down for one count, but the pain brings it up more than anything. Chavo releases the hold and hyperextends Rey's knee, pulling on his ankle. Chavo drops to the mat again, Rey hits some right hands and a kick to Chavo. Chavo still has hold of Rey's ankle but an enziguri solves that issue. Chavo drops onto the second rope, but Rey's knee gives way as he picks up speed for the 619.

Chavo Guerrero applies a single-leg boston crab, and Rey could quit twice in as many matches. Rey is able to position himself close to the ropes and breaks the hold. Chavo hits a European uppercut unstrapping Mysterio's mask, could Mysterio be de-masked twice in as many matches!? Rey Mysterio is sent into the corner, Chavo lifts him on one shoulder but Rey distributes his weight so they drop to the mat. Rey gets a nearfall from the cover. Rey goes out to the apron, but Chavo attacks him and sends him head first into the top turnbuckle. Chavo climbs the ropes and tries to bring Rey up with him, but Rey fights him off with rights. Rey avoids whatever Chavo was thinking and drags him back into the Tree of Woe in the corner as he gets back in the ring. Rey assaults the knee until the referee forces him to stop. Chavo pulls at Rey's mask and sends him across the ring, Rey drops to avoid a waistlock, sending Chavo to the outside. Rey Mysterio hits a running seated senton off the apron and sends Chavo back into the ring. Rey springboards in with another seated senton but it takes its toll on his knee. Chavo tries to take advantage with a sunset flip but Rey rolls through and kicks Chavo in the head. Rey covers but Chavo kicks out at 2 ½. Chavo reverses an irish whip and catches Rey on his shoulder from a moonsault attempt, Rey counters to a DDT! 1, 2, Chavo gets his foot on the bottom rope. JBL says Chavo's not the same guy he was when he made Rey quit, he's improved since then as Rey climbs to the top rope, Rey flies at Chavo, but hits the mat! Chavo lifts Rey up and hits a Gory Bomb, 1, 2, no! I genuinely thought they were going to have Rey Mysterio lose his return match then. However, Rey Mysterio gets the first shot in as they get to their feet. Kicking at Chavo with his good knee and leaning on the ropes. Chavo lands in position for the 619 but the kick meets air, Chavo hits 2/3 of the Three Amigos, but Rey slips out the back on the third, Rey hits the 619, springboard falling splash edition and covers Chavo for the victory.

WINNER: REY MYSTERIO

Usually, I would complain about the leg work being in both matches, but with it being Rey Mysterio's return story from knee injury it made sense. Rey wanted revenge on Chavo Guerrero for taking him out for months and Chavo wanted Rey Mysterio out for longer so he could be the best wrestler living off Eddie Guerrero's name. (I put the blame for that on the booking team by the way.) I enjoyed this match more than the last one. The finish was good for a pop from the crowd but just completely fucked the point of the whole match. Chavo Guerrero was aggressive, Rey did what he could around his knee 99% of the time then thought "Fuck it" at the end and it wasn't all about Eddie. One of their better matches. – WORKRATE: 3.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 2.5/5 OVERALL 6/10

This afternoon I shall be posting the WWE World Heavyweight championship match from Summerslam 2008. CM Punk defends against JBL. We should be confused by that as JBL mentioned being retired during this match but wrestling retirements don't last.
