CHAVO GUERRERO VS. REY MYSTERIO (2006)

Help out the blog by bookmarking this link to Amazon.

This match starts off Summerslam, to begin the event there is a video package highlighting the DX vs. McMahons tag team match, King Booker defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Batista, the man who never lost it and Edge defending his WWE Championship against John Cena. Michael Cole and JBL welcome us to Summerslam and they're handling the Smackdown side of things. JR and Jerry “The King” Lawler are there for Raw as is tradition and the new commentary team of Joey Styles and Tazz are calling the ECW championship match between Sabu and The Big Show tonight.

Rey Mysterio enters the match first and he looks really focused. It's a personal issue so Rey Rey has his game face on. Michael Cole says Rey has to face Chavo tonight but Vickie Guerrero isn't happy with the situation between the two. JBL goes off on Rey saying he's leeching off Eddie Guerrero's name and Chavo Guerrero is well within his rights to be pissed off. We get a short video of Eddie and Rey winning the tag team championships at No Way Out 2005 and their run as champions. That's just a snippet of their relationship. Chavo walks out staring daggers through Rey Mysterio as we get a similar package for Los Guerreros.

CHAVO GUERRERO VS. REY MYSTERIO
WWE Summerslam (20th August 2006)

Rey charges as Chavo enters and fists fly. Chavo Guerrero came out of retirement for this match as Rey sends Chavo across the ring, knocking him down with a back elbow. Chavo barges Rey from his knees taking him down. Chavo stomps at Rey on the mat and brings him up for a European uppercut, before going back to the stomps. Rey is soon back on his feet, but Chavo reverses an irish whip. Rey springboards back off the middle rope but gets caught by Chavo, Rey arm drags his way out of it and sends Chavo to the floor through the ropes. Rey hits a baseball slide dropkick to Chavo but misses a slingshot body press as Chavo slides back in the ring. Chavo shows Rey how it's done before sending him into the ring for our instant replay. Chavo takes the boots to Rey in the corner before choking him with his boot. Chavo tells Rey it's his blood, not Rey's, Rey gets sent headfirst into the turnbuckle, but punches his way out of the corner, Rey kicks at the back of Chavo's leg, knocking him off his feet. Rey kicks Chavo towards the corner but Chavo reverses an irish whip, Rey floats over and runs at Chavo, he rolls up Chavo but Chavo uses his own momentum to send him into the top turnbuckle head first!

Chavo Guerrero starts trying to shake feeling back into his leg before dropping Rey with a back suplex and talking some trash. Chavo wants to hurt Rey Mysterio, he came out of retirement to beat Rey Mysterio up, not beat him in a match. Chavo pays homage to his uncle Eddie, bringing “Eddie, Eddie” chants as he kicks Rey in the ribs. JBL says that fires both guys up as Chavo hits Rey with rights in the corner, knocking his mask off. Rey slides out of the ring to replace his mask and good work by Chavo making it look like he went for Rey. Chavo gives chase as Rey gets his mask back in place, throwing him into the ring. Chavo with another kick to the ribs before he tries to send Mysterio into the corner. Rey reverses it but is sent over the top rope. Rey lands on the apron but Chavo gets the right hands in first. He sends Mysterio's head into the turnbuckle again before bringing them both up to the second rope, Chavo tells the crew to get out of the way, but Rey blocks whatever he was going for. Rey and Chavo fight to the top before sending each other down to the mat face first!

The referee counts them down, with both getting up at 6. I'm sure Cole said 8 though. Maybe they thought 8 would break the flow of the match too much. Rey ducks a clothesline and dropkicks through Chavo's knee with speed. Rey ducks another clothesline, springboarding from the middle rope into a cross body on Chavo, that's enough for a nearfall, the first in the match. Chavo Guerrero strikes first as they get back to a vertical base with a European uppercut, knocking Rey down. Chavo staggers into a clothesline as JBL mentions that Chavo's leg is going to stop him flying as much as he likes to. Luckily he's also aggressive, Rey reverses an irish whip dropping Chavo with a drop toe hold. A beautiful roundhouse kick by Rey knocks a kneeling Chavo down, and Rey covers for 2. Rey hits Chavo with a forearm in the corner, but is sent across the ring, Rey stops himself last second catching Chavo with a back elbow. Rey tries to climb the ropes but Chavo cuts him off. Chavo looking to bring Rey down the hard way, but Rey elbows out of it, Rey lands on Chavo's shoulders and spins himself around for a hurricanrana! 619 hits Chavo but he ducks the senton. Rey Mysterio hurricanranas them both over the top rope to the floor!

They scrap on the floor as we see a replay, and Chavo has the advantage as they get to their feet, sending Rey into the ring. Vickie Guerrero comes out, because if one Guerrero's involved they all are... She tries to beg Chavo off of Rey, and he tries to send her to the back and get back in the ring, she drags him back down and slaps him. Rey dives through the ropes with a tope taking Chavo out, and sends him back in the ring. Vickie begs with Rey Mysterio, giving Chavo a chance to blindside him with right hands, Chavo brings Rey in with a suplex and rolls through, hitting a second. Rey avoids the hat-trick sending Chavo into the ropes, Rey sends Chavo over with a hurricanrana and hits the Three Amigos! Vickie's screeching at ringside, it's grating. Rey climbs to the top turnbuckle, Vickie gets on the apron and accidentally crotches him, sending him down to the mat. Chavo takes advantage with a brainbuster and hits the Frog Splash pointing to his uncle Eddie to end the match.

WINNER: CHAVO GUERRERO

The match was fine, actually, sometimes Chavo Guerrero can show he's an under-rated worker. This was one of those matches, however, the surrounding story is what annoys me. They whore out Eddie Guerrero's name and this event happened 9 MONTHS after his passing. Vickie Guerrero's involvement really pissed me off. Being there for the finish and just the whole time she was there she was irritating. Luckily over time, she'd improve but meh. Again the match itself was excellent but I can't bring myself to enjoy it too much. What's worse is Chavo went into the same feud with Chris Benoit directly after this one. – WORKRATE: 3.5/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT 0.25/5 OVERALL 3.75/10

Tomorrow I shall review these two facing off again a year later. I don't remember much about it so it will be interesting to compare them. After which I shall put up a match for Summerslam 2008, but that shall be a random match unless someone brings me a suggestion. Both of those reviews will be posted tomorrow, with Chavo vs. Rey in the morning and the second during the afternoon/evening.
