KEVIN OWENS VS. CJ PARKER

Whilst trying to create a back-link from the review of NXT TakeOver: R Evolution's main event, I realised I hadn't actually posted the first half of the show. The first half is also in my old flawed rating system, along with other reviews. I am looking at doing a Required Rewatch of these shows and updating their rating, the layout is just something I need to figure out the details of before I can start.

Due to this mistake this weekend I shall be posting the first 3 matches from NXT: R Evolution as they were originally reviewed.

We begin with a video package for NXT's new acquisition, Kevin Owens (Kevin Steen on the indies) which shifts into other NXT wrestlers talking about tonight being their night for evolution, and it's their revolution. Commentary tonight is handled by Corey Graves, Rich Brennan and Alex Riley.

Kevin Owens comes out for his NXT debut to chants of “Fight Owens Fight” CJ Parker is out to be his first NXT victim. At Arrival Parker was squashed by Mojo Rawley, last time out at TakeOver: Fatal Four Way he lost to Baron Corbin. I'm starting to see where he fits on the brand. CJ Parker has a sign saying “my fight matters” and the commentators think it's a dig at Owens.

KEVIN OWENS VS. CJ PARKER
NXT TakeOver: R Evolution
11th December 2014

Owens sandwiches Parker in the corner with a pair of clotheslines and follows up with a cannonball. Bringing a new meaning to the phrase “squash match” in the opening seconds. CJ Parker rolls out of the ring and Owens destroys his cardboard sign. Owens hits Parker with a running somersault senton over the top to the floor! “Holy shit” chants by the fans and Kevin Owens tells us we haven't seen anything yet. He tries to get CJ Parker back in the ring, but Parker breaks his grip. Parker gets back in the ring and scurries away from Owens. Parker ducks out of the corner, avoiding Owens, but misses with a right hand. Owens hits a right hand in the corner, and a chop. Kevin Owens beats down on Parker in the corner, and the referee has to separate them. CJ Parker barely clips Owens with a spin kick as we get a replay of the senton. CJ Parker gets some boots in to Owens, and Owens hits him with a chop as he gets to his knee. CJ Parker continues the assault but Owens rolls out of the way of a senton. CJ Parker backs to the corner and tries to get the boot up, but Owens catches it. Palm strike by CJ Parker connects! Parker gets a nearfall from that somehow. Kevin Owens is busted open now and the referee keeps trying to check on him, but he and Parker carry on. Parker hits running knees in the corner but they have no effect, with Owens flattening him with a clothesline straight after. Owens picks up Parker and hits a fisherman's neckbreaker onto his knee. Graves - “I dunno what to call that” Rich “Call a doctor!” Owens hits his Pop-up powerbomb for the quick victory.

WINNER: KEVIN OWENS

This is the second Takeover in a row that Parker has been someone's punching bag and his third overall. He would soon decide he's had enough and leave for greener pastures in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Having seen Owens on the indy circuit I think Parker might have got too much offense in here for a dominant victory by Owens, but the WWE bubble is away from all else, so I guess it's some form of status quo letting Parker look that good. Owens got a good amount of his stuff in, and the fisherman's neckbreaker would be a good “megafinisher” for Owens if the pop-up powerbomb can't get it done. Still a good short match, if too 50/50. – Rating: 3.2/10

Rich Brennan welcomes Corey Graves who due to concussion issues can no longer wrestle in-ring so he switched to a commentary duty. Riley says they'll disagree but they'll have a lot of fun. We see Neville stretching backstage for his title defence tonight against Sami Zayn. In a WWE.com interview Neville says that Zayn put the match stipulation on himself, he tried to stop him. He won't be responsible for ending Sami's career just to catapult his own, it's all on Sami.
