Unfortunately this week I wasn't feeling up to getting the plans I had for up to tonight finished, therefore you shall get a post today, tomorrow and Sunday. Sunday shall just be a random match I enjoy and tomorrow's match is the Edge & Christian tag team match. Then I will be able to go back to Monday/Wednesday/Friday next week for 3 womens' matches from 3 different WWE eras. I feel the blog is too male-centric and with the Womens' Money in the Bank match next month being advertised heavily at the current moment it seems an appropriate time to add some more Womens' matches too.
NEW AGE OUTLAWS (C) VS. HARDY BOYZ
(Steel cage match for the WWF Tag Team Championships)
WWF Smackdown (25th November 1999)
Handling commentary tonight is Jerry "The King" Lawler and Michael Cole. The New Age Outlaws won the championships beginning their fifth reign on Raw 2 weeks ago beating Al Snow and Mankind. At this point, the Hardy Boyz had only had 1 short reign whilst feuding with the Acolytes back in the summer. The champs enter first and Road Dogg does his bit as he makes his way towards the ring, the crowd are loving it. This is during a period of time where DeGeneration X were meant to be heels. The Hardyz enter for the match and they have Terri as their manager due to their win at No Mercy last month. We see Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah have front row seats in the crowd, and Mae Young does the DX crotch chop. The Hardyz had a championship match the previous week which ended in controversy which is how they got a steel cage rematch tonight. Michael Cole is excited to see what the high-flying Hardyz will do in a steel cage match.
We begin with just Road Dogg and Jeff in the ring because steel cage matches must have ordinary tag rules! Road Dogg backs Jeff into the corner and hits him with a knee and right hand. Jeff is sent across the ring but he uses the top rope to float-over Road Dogg sending him into the middle turnbuckle. Jeff dropkicks Road Dogg from behind, sending him headfirst into the turnbuckle again. Jeff gets control of Road Dogg's arm but Road Dogg uses his size advantage gain leverage on Jeff. Jeff quickly sends Road Dogg to the floor but Michael Cole is more bothered between the tag team match later between Test & Shane McMahon facing Triple H and X-Pac. Mr McMahon has also put a special stipulation on the match.Back to this one though, Rad Dogg jabs at Jeff before
Matt take the heat off him. Matt tried to climb the cage, forcing
Road Dogg to stop him, Billy Gunn does the same on the other side of
the ring, dragging Jeff to the wrong side of town. The Hardyz both
get the advantage in the corner and send New Age Outlaws towards each
other, Billy Gunn leap frogs to avoid a collision but they both run
into a clothesline. Both Hardyz send Gunn across the ring into Road
Dogg, but Gunn catches Jeff on poetry in motion and sends him into
Matt. Road Dogg scales the ropes, but doesn't try to escape, he hits
a picture perfect moonsault onto both Hardyz! Double cover, but both
Hardyz kick out at 2.
The champs decide to single out Matt, Road Dogg sends
him across the ring for Gunn to lift him in the air and lets him fall
on the top turnbuckle! They turn their attention to Jeff now as we
get a double feature of Road Dogg's moonsault, Jeff ducks a double
clothesline and kicks Road Dogg, Gunn catches Jeff's leg and
catapults him into the cage. Billy Gunn looks to climb the cage, but
Matt sends Road Dogg into the ropes, knocking him down and crotching
him on the top rope as Lawler mentions it's pretty much turned Texas
Tornado style match now. Road Dogg reverses another irish whip
sending Matt into the corner, but eats a back elbow. Jeff trips Road
Dogg and Hardyz hit a double leg drop. Both Hardyz send Gunn into the
cage, and again the other side for good measure. Jeff hits a Swanton
bomb and Matt climbs the cage on the other side of the ring, Road
Dogg tries to cut him off, but is attacked by Jeff, they brawl whilst
Matt gets to the top of the cage and he hits a moonsault from the
top! Matt hit Road Dogg, Jeff and the referee!
Billy Gunn is first to his feet, and Jeff somehow
isn't far behind, everyone moving that pace slower now, showing the
effects of the match. Jeff runs at Billy Gunn, Gunn lifts him over
head to send him into the cage, but Jeff catches himself, and flings
himself over the top to the floor! The Hardy Boyz should have won the
match but the referee's still out. X-Pac sprints down to ringside and
throws Jeff back in the ring. Road Dogg's made it to his feet and
he's scaling the cage, but Matt cuts him off with a low blow. Matt
and Road Dogg engage in a slugfest balanced on the top rope, and Road
Dogg gets sent down to the mat. Hardy tries to climb, but X-Pac
climbs the outside and kicks Matt Hardy back down. Billy Gunn is near
the door, slowly crawling out of the cage as the referee wakes up.
Gunn makes it to the floor and the New Age Outlaws retain with
X-Pac's assistance for the second straight week.
WINNERS: THE NEW AGE OUTLAWS (BILLY GUNN ESCAPED THE
CAGE – STILL WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS)
This was a fun way to spend under 8 minutes. (The
match itself was probably about five) The Hardyz were a popular team,
The New Age Outlaws got another cheap victory and everyone enjoyed
it. Road Dogg's moonsault is something I wish he'd pulled out more.
It's very technically sound. That was the highlight of the match for
me, Jeff's tumble to the floor for the false finish was something I
found unnecessary, and especially didn't get the reaction from the
crowd I would want for that sort of stunt. A pretty average match
with a cool moment really. – Rating: 4.5/10
