Due to time restraints this week I'm having to dig into my "emergency pile" of reviews. So here is the first match in Lucha Underground.
MATCH 1: BLUE DEMON, JR. VS. CHAVO GUERRERO
Blue Demon Jr. wants a handshake and
Chavo accepts. Vampiro mentions that Blue Demon, Jr. is in the
twilight of his career, and Chavo is also a veteran of the sport. We
get a collar-elbow tie up and Blue Demon, Jr. is able to back
Guerrero into the corner, but Guerrero switches Demon into the corner
and releases the hold at 3. Another collar-elbow tie up, but this
time Blue Demon, Jr. gets a waistlock. Chavo drops to the floor and
releases Demon's left arm, before getting an armlock. Blue Demon, Jr.
traps Chavo's head, but Chavo is able to get on to his toes and kip
out of the headscissors. We get a momentary standoff before the two
men circle. Grecco-Roman Knuckle lock and Chavo presses on Demon, Jr.
Chavo is able to force Demon Jr. down but Demon Jr. bridges and
powers his way back up. Matt Striker mentions Demon Jr.'s power
advantage as he takes control of the test of strength, bringing
Chavo's hands down to the mat and stomping on them.
Blue Demon, Jr. wants another test of strength, but
Chavo opts for a single leg takedown, then rises back up for a
waistlock, before snapmaring Blue Demon, Jr. down for a nearfall.
They cut to the crowd during the pin for some reason. But when it cut
back Chavo had gone straight for a headlock. Blue Demon, Jr. gets
back to his feet and shoves Chavo into the ropes as Vampiro
reiterates that these two guys grew up in the wrestling business.
Chavo rolls under a clothesline and jumps into an arm drag, Demon
keeps moving and ducks a clothesline himself before fluffing a
headscissors, but it's enough to send Chavo out of the ring. Baseball
slide by Demon follows. He brings Chavo back to his feet and hits a
hard slap. Matt Striker reminds the fans that count outs are by a
referee's discretion. Chavo is first in the ring but his kick is
caught. Demon throws Chavo's leg down and slaps him again. A third
slap sends Chavo into the corner and Blue Demon Jr. is pandering to
the crowd. Chavo runs out of the corner but he's caught in a
tilt-a-whirl backbreaker! Rear chinlock by Demon but Chavo is able to
get back to his feet. Blue Demon Jr. keeps the momentum on his side
by backing Chavo into the corner and slapping him again. Chavo is
sent across the ring, but tries to float-over Blue Demon Jr. Demon
catches him on his shoulder and looks for a powerslam but Chavo
reverses it into a DDT for a nearfall.
We cut to the commentators so Vampiro can say Eddie is
the only Guerrero liked by anybody, and as we cut back Chavo sloppily
monkey flips Blue Demon Jr. over the top rope. Chavo hits a slingshot
plancha to Blue Demon Jr. and gets him back in the ring. Chavo climbs
the ropes but Blue Demon Jr. knocks him back down to the mat. Scoop
slam by Blue Demon Jr. and he sets up for the Swanton bomb. He
favours his right knee, getting some movement in it on the apron
momentarily first. Chavo rolls out of the way of the diving attack
and covers! 1, 2, 2.5, no! Chavo brings Blue Demon Jr. back to his
feet and perches him on the top turnbuckle before getting a hanging
triangle choke (looked like a recovery from a botched hurricanrana to
me) but Demon slams him down to the floor and holds his shoulders
down. Chavo powers a shoulder up after 2. Blue Demon Jr. locks in a
half-turned sharpshooter and he brings Chavo's arm back too. Vampiro
says Chavo's in hella pain and Chavo taps immediately.
This was a good opening bout, they built to the
bigger moves, and only went for a cover after high impact attacks.
Both men showed the respect they have for Lucha Libre by wanting to
win the match cleanly and using 2 well known Lucha families was a
very well done move by Lucha Underground. I'm already a fan 10
minutes in. – Rating: 6.9/10
