PUBLIC ENEMY © VS. CACTUS JACK & MIKEY WHIPWRECK
(ECW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS)
ECW Hardcore TV (27th August 1994)
This is the first match on WWE's DVD release Bloodsport: ECW's Most Violent Matches.
The DVD begins with ancient chanting music over photographs of stills from ECW matches. We get an Extreme Championship Wrestling intro followed by some black and white footage. The DVD is introduced by Paul Heyman. He simply says besides his children ECW means more to him than anything in the world. It's a body of work a lot of people are very proud of. He then goes straight into the first match on the set.
In 1994 Cactus Jack was in a feud with Public Enemy, he needed a tag team partner to take them on and no one knew who he would pick. The ECW roster had a variety of characters, which sick bastard would he choose to partner up with? He decided the perfect man for the job was the 18-19-year-old kid that was in his rookie year, who used to work on the ring crew. Young Mikey Whipwreck. Cactus had to practically drag Mikey out to face out with Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge. We begin the match with both teams in their respective corners, Cactus is still trying to reassure Mikey that he won't die. Cactus somehow convinces Mikey to start the match with Rocco Rock. Rock says it's over.
Joey Styles flying solo for this match, the fans chant “jail bird” at Rocco Rock for apparently spending the night in jail recently. This riles him up and Styles thinks that might not be a good idea. Rocco advances and Mikey tries to scamper, but Cactus drags him back in the ring for more words of comfort. He's taking words of comfort from Cactus fucking Jack here. Public Enemy has beaten any team that's come in front of them in ECW, from Kevin Sullivan and The Tazmaniac to the Funk brothers. Just as I think we're going to begin the match Mikey begs Cactus Jack to tag in. Jack obliges and he starts with Rocco Rock. Cactus Jack has words with Mikey in the corner, Mikey's running up and down the apron for some reason. Mikey bails and runs up the entranceway. Cactus goes to retrieve him and gets ambushed by the champs. Cactus Jack fights back but Public Enemy use the numbers game to get him back in the ring.
Cactus Jack decks Grunge and crotches Rock on the top rope. Rock drops to the mat and Cactus chokes him in the corner, Grunge attacks Cactus Jack from behind and rakes his eyes. Grunge sends Jack into the turnbuckle across the ring head first. They stomp him in the corner. Mikey's back! Mikey smashes a board in half over Public Enemy's head, sending them out of the ring. Cactus Jack joins Mikey in a bang bang salute. Public Enemy get back in the ring as Joey Styles calls this a Rite of Passage for Mikey. They Flyboy back in the ring with the madman and Rocco Rock backs Cactus Jack into the corner. Rocco Rock slaps Cactus Jack as he breaks and dances. Another collar-elbow tie up and Rock backs Cactus Jack into a corner again, this time following up with shoulder blocks. Rocco Rock kicks Jack in the gut and sends him across the ring. Cactus Jack nails him with a back elbow as Rock charges across the ring. Cactus Jack gets the tag to Mikey and sends him into Rocco Rock. Mikey gets back to his feet and goes for Grunge too. Mikey unloads on Rocco Rock with lefts and rights. Mikey tries to run away but Cactus scoops him up and uses his as a battering ram. Mikey gets sent over the top as he clotheslines the Flyboy. Cactus Jack still has to hit his over the top clothesline onto the timekeeper's table leaving Mikey and Grunge in the ring.
MIKEY CONNECTS WITH A DROPKICK! ANOTHER! Mikey sends Grunge across the ring and sends him overhead for a back body drop as Cactus Jack and Rocco Rock go through a table on the outside. Cactus Jack gets back in the ring and dumps Grunge outside. He follows for a swinging neckbreaker as Mikey's decided to wait for a tag. Cactus calls Mikey back over, telling him to go for Grunge. Rocco Rock has a chair but that doesn't last long as Cactus Jack puts him against the guard rail, Rocco Rock prepares for the chair shot way too early, but doesn't put his hands up. He takes another shot across the back as Mikey bounces Grunge's skull off the timekeeper's table. Cactus Jack hits Grunge on the head with a chair before Mikey hits Grunge's face off the table again. Grunge and Whipwreck get back in the ring. Grunge swings the momentum with a low blow and DDT's Mikey on a chair.
Grunge dances over Mikey and brings him to his feet. Grunge hits a straight right hand knocking him back down. Grunge brings Mikey back to his feet by his arm, knocking him back down with a short-arm clothesline. Grunge hits a delayed vertical suplex and covers but Cactus Jack breaks it up at 2. Rocco Rock gets the tag and hits a leg drop. Rocco Rock covers and this time Mikey kicks out himself. He gets a reaction like he just won the title though. The fans are mad into Mikey Whipwreck. Rocco Rock hits a high powerslam but spots Cactus looking to get in the ring. He drops a knee on Mikey but turns his back on Jack. Cactus Jack breaks up the pin with a double axe handle, the referee's distracted by Cactus Jack so Public Enemy switch without a tag. High back body drop sends Mikey up and over and Grunge hits a kneeling piledriver. 1, 2. No! Mikey kicked out again! Grunge tags out to Rocco Rock and they hit a double clothesline. Rocco Rock picks Whipwreck up for a side slam and Grunge comes off the top rope with an elbow drop. Grunge covers but Mikey kicks out at 2 ½ again. Rocco Rock breaks up another cover causing Cactus Jack to come to his partner's aid. Grunge sends Mikey into a corner across the ring as Cactus Jack forearms Rock in the opposite corner.
It spills outside again, with Cactus Jack hitting Grunge's head over the guard rail. Rocco Rock comes off the apron with an axe handle before sending him into the crowd. Rocco Rock follows, braining him with an upside down chair shot. Cactus replies with a chair shot to his own and again hits another across Rock's back. Cactus Jack grabs a crutch off a fan and hits that across the Flyboy's back too before sending him throat first into the railing of the tiered seating. Johnny Grunge has appeared in the crowd and he cuts Cactus Jack off. Good job Public Enemy are wearing bright jerseys, makes them easier to spot here. We get a spotlight as Cactus Jack throws a chair short-range at Rocco Rock. Johnny Grunge catches up, attacking Cactus Jack from behind. Rocco Rock flies off a raised area knocking Cactus Jack down on the concrete. Johnny Grunge brings Cactus Jack all the way back into the ring as Rocco Rock brings in a table. Mikey's still out in the corner. Public Enemy set up the table in the ring and Grunge continues assaulting Cactus Jack. They set him up on the table and Rocco Rock ascends to the top turnbuckle. Johnny Grunge holds Cactus Jack in place as Rock moonsaults him through the table! Cactus Jack and the table both thrown out of the ring, leaving Mikey Whipwreck in there alone.
Johnny Grunge hits the inverted neckbreaker beginning the Drive By, but Cactus knocks Rocco Rock off the top rope. Rocco Rock takes the worst looking landing crotched on the top rope. Cactus Jack brings Grunge out of the ring, Mikey rolls up Rocco Rock! Mikey gets three!!
WINNERS: CACTUS JACK & MIKEY WHIPWRECK (NEW ECW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS)
This was almost a handicap match, Mikey got enough hope spots in to make him look like he's actually been to a wrestling class but was correctly dominated by the tag team champions. Cactus Jack would constantly lose to the numbers game, and Public Enemy did a good job of keeping the challengers away from each other. The crowd was viciously behind Mikey Whipwreck, and him getting the winning fall blew the roof off the arena. Not a lot to the match, but the crowd reaction made it. – Rating: 2.6/10
