BILL ALFONSO VS. BEULAH McGUILLICUTTY
(INTERGENDER MATCH)
As Good as it Gets (20th September 1997)

This is an incredibly divisive match in ECW history. Fonzie is an overly irritating referee with a whistle and unfortunate acoustics in the building. Beulah would become Mrs Tommy Dreamer, teaming with her husband and Terry Funk to take on Edge, Mick Foley and Lita at ECW On Night Stand 2006.

Heyman introduces this match by calling it 5 of the most intense minutes in professional wrestling history. We begin with a crowd around Tommy Dreamer at ringside, Beulah looks concerned. From what I can gather he was attacked by Rob Van Dam before we joined the match. Fonzy just wants to begin the match. Styles then says the match is still in progress so it may have started as a tag team match. The wrestlers at ringside try to tell Beulah but she's still concerned about her man. Fonzy shoves Beulah and they circle. Heavy “Beulah chants as they trash talk in the ring. Beulah retrieves a cookie sheet from under her shirt and Alfonso drives his fist into it. Cookie sheet to the head knocks Alfonso down and across the ring. Beulah borrows Dreamer's pose and the fans pop like fuck. She sends Billy boy's head into the turnbuckle and he's busted open early. Beulah teases where to throw him for the crowd before dumping him outside.

Beulah sends Fonzy into the guard rail, before across the arena over the other guard rail before rolling him back in the ring. Beulah arms herself with a frying pan before following him but Fozy hits a low blow. Turns out that hurts women just as much, fellas. Leg drop up the middle from Bill Alfonso, and the crowd chants “Fuck you” at him. New Jack and Axl Rotten are at ringside cheering Beulah on. Alfonso can't see out of his right eye so he's doing pretty well here. He goes to choke Beulah but shoves her down to the mat before going for a stroll around the ring to take his whistle off and chokes her with that instead. He brings her to her feet to slam her down. Fonzy grabs her hair and brings her back up, but Beulah blocks a suplex. Beulah reverses to a DDT and covers, but only gets two. He didn't just get his shoulder up though, he practically jumped to his side. He should be careful using that much energy whilst he's bleeding.

Beulah ducks a clothesline, and hits one of her own, flipping Fonzy out of his boots! Fonzy waves it off as Styles confirms this started as Rob Van Dam & Alfonso vs. Tommy Dreamer and Beulah. Beulah hits Fonzy with a hard chop but he puts her in the corner by her hair and chops her, sending her to the mat. Fonzy signals for a moonsault and positions Beulah, he somehow manages to get to the top rope, only to get crotched by Beulah! Beulah hangs him in the tree of woe and asks for a chair. She gets one and places it in front of Fonzy's face. Running dropkick to the chair gets an “E-C-Dub” chant and Beulah calls for a moonsault now. Joey Styles says she's hit it before, but Fonzy sneaks up on her. Powerbomb attempt countered into a Frankensteiner! Styles calls it the Beulah-canranna, regardless it gets her the victory.

WINNER: BEULAH MCGUILLICUTTY

These two knew this match (or their segments of the preceeding mixed tag match) didn't have to be much. That allowed them to keep it simple, Fonzy got some easy heat, Beulah got to look dominant and the fans loved it. There seemed to be more sizzle than steak to me, but the beauty of ECW sometimes was that it was locked it that time period. It was enjoyable enough, but I need more backstory really. – Rating: 3.5/10
